  1. There was also the Kotsay in CF thing which I believe ended up neutral, but was a really stupid idea. He let one get over his head that Gomez/Nyjer do not but did but did hit a HR. Just a bad idea, though.
  2. I'd still cut him and take him to court.
  3. This shows how much I've been paying attention (was at softball all night and just saw the score and A-Ram's homer). Still not something I'd normally do.
  4. The Mets may stick with Lagares in CF, who is defensively equal or better than Gomez. Offensively, not so much. I don't think it's impossible that the Mets consider it but right now they may be happy. Maybe later in the year excitement to be a playoff contender may set in. I think Plawecki's bat looks OK but I'm not sure I'm jumping on him just yet. He was a ranked prospect but he was only OPSing .800 (at best) in the PCL. That's decent for a catcher but that's not stud status. Maybe I'm looking for too much in a catcher.
  5. My favorite part was when Ron gave Braun a mental day off and then brought him back against a guy (Cueto) that has owned him in his career. Bashing Marquis or the bullpen that day may have been the best thing for Braun's mentality.
  6. Meyer is better than Peralta (granted, older) in the minors...plus the Twins have no motivation to do so. Don't see that one happening.
  7. Melky Cabrera got a gigantic contract after hitting .100 OPS points higher than his recent career uptick. A-Rod got a $250 million contract. Poo Holes got a $250 million contract. There are lots of reasons to do steroids once in the league. As for the other discussion about how much they help, I am one that still thinks Braun is a very good player and doesn't "need" roids, but there are plenty of guys that pretty clearly were helped. The league average OPS was almost .800 15 years ago and now it is .700. Sosa, Bonds, Palmiero, Piazza, Juan Gonzalez, A-Rod to an extent, etc. It's not as if these guys wouldn't be in the league if they didn't have the roids, but they put up more superhuman numbers with them. Why is A-Rod likely "off" the roids and putting up a .750-.800 OPS near 40 in Yankee Stadium yet when Barry Bonds went on roids and went from a 1.000 OPS guy to a 1.2 to even a 1.4 (!) OPS guy as he was pushing 40 and they build a stadium where it was extremely hard to hit HR to right field?
  8. Holt is an OK platoon utility guy for a contending team...like the Red Sox. He can play anywhere and has decent splits as a LH batter. For a team rebuilding, there is no reason to try to grab utility players, especially aging ones. Give me younger players.
  9. I'm not strongly in favor of trading the guy but there are red flags as to whether he can be a #3ish starter. The division we're in has teams that have stacked themselves with a fair amount of lefty bats. I'm not sure he comes out of this year with good numbers. If nobody is offering anything of substance, then yeah, I'd hold on to him and see if I could develop him further because some of the tools are there.
  10. LOL...cut him and take it to court? They would likely never win that and also never sign a big-dollar contract for the foreseeable future.
  11. Wily isn't just starting to struggle. He's had a FIP of 4.3 (2013), 4.1 (2014), and 4.4 (2015) in the majors. Last year he had "luck" to get that 3.5 ERA and the run support for the wins. For most of the year I believe he had the highest run support in the league. He can't get lefties out. I mean, like lefty hitters are a combined Mike Trout against him. He's had TJ surgery once and still throws hard with a bunch of sliders...TJ #2 might not be too far around the corner. His WHIP combined in the minors was 1.4 and his ERA was 4 combined in the minors. An ace or even higher-end rotation guy should have better minors numbers than that. I would imagine other teams also see these issues and his trade value isn't incredibly high. He's an OK piece that never has been a frontline starter prospect. It's not overreaction. I like him and he can probably be an up-and-down #3/#4 as his career progresses...but this isn't just reaction from the first 3-4 starts of the season.
  12. I wasn't a Broxton, big $ to reliever, nor an "8th inning man" fan, but short contracts at high dollars don't bother me. Broxton tanks, he's gone (at a buyout) next year. Those contracts are more "it's Mark's money" to me. Usually the extra money wouldn't have been put to a useful purpose that year. He could be making $100 million himself this year and I wouldn't care, because he's not getting in the way of future building like Braun's might. Broxton is just collecting a paycheck on a team that has no chance, and wouldn't have had a chance even if his 9 million was available to fill up the roster in 2015 with.
  13. The reason I don't care about the past usage and lying is that he is one of several thousand players that lied 1990-2013 (still going obviously, but the number is much lower now as seen by the #s). I'd say 50+% of the league was doing stuff many of these years. Nobody has ever not lied, including Andy "I only did it once, really!" Pettite. In terms of his current contract and player, yeah, it is not good right now. Hope he can turn it around this year and I hope roid usage (plus injury) doesn't get in his way of staying a pretty good player.
  14. The real question here is whether Detroit has learned their lesson finally. They seemed to be obsessed plugging in guys that have "closer experience" (Phil Coke who had a tiny bit of it briefly before was plugged in and promptly destroyed by righties) and paying up for vets. Dumping a ton of money into an aging Nathan, Valverde, trading for Soria who has been a mixed bag, etc. I feel like Nathan may have been the breaking point, especially with Jim Leyland not around, where they are smart about the position and wouldn't overpay for 2 declining guys that are very overpaid.
  15. I figured the team's performance so far itself was enough of a joke to provide all of the humor we need around here.
  16. I think you guys are underselling the 5 guys from 2-6 in the order. I'm at the point of somewhat hoping the team tanks, and I do believe that Aramis is probably done...but all things being equal, that lineup looks like the '27 Yankees compared to a few of the lineups that the Phillies and Braves have thrown out there. Obviously they haven't shown it, but Lind crushes righties, Parra is a good hitter vs. righties, Braun/Davis will come around at least a little bit (Davis is fine without the power). Not sure about A-Ram. The Braves had .680 career minors OPS Christian Bethancourt BATTING CLEANUP on a getaway day last week. Of course, everyone in baseball has performed better than the Brewers...but there are some brutal offenses out there that over the course of the season will be way worse than even that Brewers lineup.
  17. Let's assume the Brewers are done this year. Do you think they will be ready to contend in 2016? 2017? Those are Luc's last 2 years under contract. He'll be in his age 31 turning 32 season in 2018. Obviously time will tell what he does between now and then, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to unload the dump truck of money for a guy that may be worn out by then. I would like to have 2 stud prospects getting called up in May of 2018, though. EDIT: And yes, I know, Attanasio won't do that. I was on board with him trying to "win now" with a prime Braun and other good players under contract the past 2-3 years even though I am normally a fan of building a team up through the minors. If he doesn't start some forward thinking, though, I'm going to develop the same opinion of him that I had of Herb Kohl with the Bucks.
  18. Absolutely. That's not a surprise and Mark runs the team, we don't. If the team is 10+ games back near the trade deadline, assuming Lohse isn't injured, I'd put the chances of a trade of Lohse at 99.9%. That said, barring a miracle, the best we'd get for Lohse is a Scooter-type prospect. That is the absolute best IMO and more likely we get an OK reliever prospect with red flags or something. That also involves Lohse rounding back into form and quelling the fears that he may be getting too old to be his "#3 starter" self. If the team really wants to rebuild, they should sell guys with actual value which Garza fits. Realistically what would I expect with Mark at the deadline and we're 10+ games back? Lohse, A-Ram, Broxton, maybe Lind dealt for a bunch of guys that project to be replacement-level players. Personally, I'd be all over trading Gomez/Luc if they are anywhere near form and the team is out of it. Gomez I would give a sliver of a chance to Mark allowing to be traded if 10+ games out, Luc near 0%. I've had this feeling since the middle of last season, that Luc, not an absolute stud prospect but very good hitter could get worn out by his next contract. Gomez isn't going to age well either and if we are rebuilding, he is not of much use to his final contract year next year.
  19. Not at all. However, if you're looking to rebuild, he has good value to teams and is a good chip to trade.
  20. Not touching Despaigne. He is a guy with a bunch of junk stuff that confused hitters early last year (and admittedly this year) before they caught on but would probably be just an average/below average pitcher in Miller Park and not in Petco.
  21. I was in favor of trading for Guerrero before but I think it's fairly clear that they're just going to string him along as a bench guy and then use him as a mainstay in the infield after Uribe/Kendrick/Rollins all expire this year and I doubt they bring all three back.
  22. Agree with most of the above post, but I do think that somebody would take on Garza, assuming he's pitching up to his standards. $12.5 million/year (even for several years) for a veteran, average/above average pitcher is a good value to most teams.
  23. Gomez and Lohse are who I'd most like to trade to be honest if they are done with this thing, I just can't imagine Mark doing it. Tons of value for those guys and I don't think either will age well into their 30s.
  24. To boot with a tougher schedule...getting the Rockies in the opening series is underrated to how tough it is. If they played the Rockies at home in July, they'd be sans Gonzalez, Tulo, and several other guys on the DL. That said, not lofting HRs against Kyle Kendrick and the like killed them.
  25. I agree that he'd be a good pickup (defensive concerns not withstanding) and, yeah, he would play every day against LH pitchers at 2B and maybe go 50/50 at 3B given that it seems as though Aramis is done or maybe should be given maximum rest.
