  1. I speculated Dunn for Gwynn Jr., Wise, and PTBNL.
  2. Well he was wrong on both accounts as he didn't include Yuni in his speculation, nor should he have worried about not having a replacement for Alcides, since Yuni.
  3. What tells you that Parra will "perform in the playoffs?" He's not going to face Trevor May, the corpse of Chad Billingsley, Sean O'Stinkivan, and whatever the Reds call their "pitching staff" in the playoffs. Hot streaks from platoon lefties are easy to predict: when they play crappy RH pitching teams in hitter's parks. I was happy that the Brewers acquired these guys, and if I was a playoff team, I'd want them...but these hot streaks are due to playing terrible RH pitching, and I would imagine other GMs know this...at least my fantasy baseball transactions this week did.
  4. Is that 2017 roster supposed to be appealing? If Mark doesn't break it up, he'll be at least paying some free agents. That projected team looks like a 70 game winner at best.
  5. I wonder if they are willing to play Gattis or Carter out there anymore. Gattis has logged 20 innings in the OF this year and Carter has not played any. LF of either Gattis or Carter with Marisnick/Rasmus CF platoon and Tucker/Santana RF platoon is serviceable, I guess. Parra would probably help but I'm not sure how much.
  6. Rollins WAR: -0.2 Segura WAR: -0.1 I doubt they'll call up Seager but I bet they'll trade for a defensive-oriented utility guy or something like that. They'll just get what they can out of this last half season of Rollins. Segura wouldn't make sense. He has no place on next year's team and is barely an upgrade if at all this year.
  7. Eh, he's not great right now, but why can't Wilmer be that good? He's only 23, was a top-100 prospect, and was OPSing over .800 and over .900 in the minors the past few years.
  8. Wilmer Flores is doing just fine at SS I think is what Logan is saying. Tejada is uninspiring but he's putting up comparable numbers as well. Both teams are probably flaming out anyways due to their atrocious offensive offseason moves. The Mets gave up a draft pick for Michael "fish out of CoorsWater" Cuddyer and the Padres made a multitude of moves selling off their future for a bunch of right-handed hitters that are extremely overrated and mostly cannot hit RHP and are not built for that park. In the Mets' case, other than the Cuddyer move, they did fine and really should be contending next year anyways. I don't see their motivation to make too many shortsighted moves this year knowing that this year is gravy and they should be up there for the division for the next 5 seasons after this. I could see the Padres maybe trading for something since they've gone "all in" on this season, but I'm not sure that it's Segura.
  9. Lind has definitely been linked via some articles.
  10. Jonathan Lucroy is never going to move to 1st by choice. He would have to be pushed there by just sucking on defense or injuries dominating him. No way the Brewers extend him just to move him to first. His bat would be of no use there. Last 3 years he ops'd .881, .795 and .838. If he's roughly a .840 1B then he'd be top 10 in all of baseball and basically the same as Lind. I don't think Lucroy would even dip to being as bad as Joe Mauer, due to having a little bit more power...but I don't think it makes much sense. -Lind is 31 and costs $7.5 million with a team option next year. Lucroy's mega-contract will start at age 31 and might last 4+ years, so we can expect him to slowly dip from .840 in the beginning down to sub-.800 as the dollar amounts go up in a critical window where the Brewers' rebuild may be on the "rise" portion of the curve. -Luc might learn to be a better 1B, but he's not great. If the Brewers do a rebuild right, I'd rather have 1B open for a guy that can hit the heck out of the ball but is stuck at 1B. The Twins are facing that problem right now with Mauer taking up 1B/DH for 3 more years at $20+ million and not really being good at hitting. -For whatever it's worth, in wOBA, Lucroy would be lower than top 10.
  11. That's a possibility...but while Luc is a very good hitter, one can find a fat, mashing 1B for cheap instead of moving Luc there and paying him $15-20 million/year as he declines (albeit a little slower). I know that's easier said than done for the Brewers over the past few years, though.
  12. Yeah, I was just saying I want them to move on from Lucroy at some point soon, but I don't think they will. I think in 2019, we'll have Braun and Lucroy playing way below what they should both making $20 million/year. That said, I know how their minds work and the business angle and that they may just not get a good offer.
  13. I watched/listened on the MLB At Bat app and it didn't feel too bad to me. He hinted they'd be sellers and even almost was implying that maybe they'd be offering an OF to SF (he mentioned the Aoki/Pence injuries to talk about how things can change quickly...but it just felt to me like that was one of their calls). I still don't think they'll trade Braun or Lucroy but I felt OK after watching and it felt like they're willing to sell (but not enough for my liking probably still).
  14. My point I guess is that Melvin/Mark probably wouldn't have traded a #1 ace type guy. Escobar almost reached the top 10 but was a defense guy. Laporta, Odorizzi, Lawrie all sit in the 60s-30s. Cain and Brantley were never ranked. They did give up a lot of guys, but not any of them were assumed to be an absolute superstar like Cole. By the way, slightly off topic, and I might be cherry picking the right time to say this, but it looks again as though Brantley is back to a "pretty good" OF, which is more in line with expectations. He had one season where the power surged but he's back to looking like a 10 HR, .780 guy and his defense is just OK. Cain exceeded even our lofty defensive expectations and he is a pretty good offensive player, though not great. That said, Cain has a lot of value just due to his defense.
  15. I'm not sure that Melvin would have traded a Cole-type guy. The Brewers have not had that type of player, but I don't think Doug/Mark are into trading A or A+ prospects very often. LaPorta may have been on the surface but obviously he was a huge bust. Brantley/Cain were B- 4th OF prospects that blew up, Lawrie was probably a B+ prospect that slightly busted, Odorizzi probably a B+ pitching prospect. Anyways, the Brewers didn't ever have an ace prospect, but I doubt Doug/Mark would have dealt that.
  16. I agree with this take. That said, if I was a fan of Atlanta, I'd be happy about this...Arizona, not as much.
  17. I am generally a fan of a Rays, A's, or pick your smart small-market team strategy. I am begging for that right now. That said, I was in favor of the Sabathia, Marcum, Greinke, etc. trades. I didn't like the Marcum trade, but I was OK with the direction. You CAN have it both ways. I even understood the later wave of Aramis, Lohse (again, didn't like the move itself), etc. when you have Braun in his prime. Then the hammer dropped on all of that stuff. I think some of those teams could have made noise if healthy or if the bullpen didn't destroy them in 2012. As it stands today, they need a wholesale explosion on the roster, and this is where I divert from Mark if he doesn't get with it. Again, I am a fan of building up the organization as the Rays and A's have, and would have preferred that all along but I understand the window they struck in. The drafting has been pretty brutal in-between, which I understand is something that maybe could have used better funding (coaching/scouting) instead of lining Kyle Lohse's pockets. I also wished/assumed they'd have dealt their "go for it" pieces when value was higher. I'm going to be endlessly angry at Mark when they dump $80 million at Lucroy's feet after not trading him and watch him deteriorate into a below-average 1B. I fully expected the CC, Greinke, Lohse, etc. deals to one day bite them. That said, they could have done a lot better of a job at mitigating this in the interim.
  18. Cecil got blown up again yesterday. A smart team would find somebody that can pitch the 9th inning (or just close games) out of their bullpen, but here's to hoping that the Blue Jays are dying to get some experience in there.
  19. I'm obviously not concerned with trading for placeholders if I'm rebuilding (like Valencia) because I don't find it as a worthwhile endeavor. Outside of the obvious reasons...I'd also like to sign reclamation projects as my placeholders. Pick up Matt Joyce if you need a "placeholder" in the OF next year...see if you can find why he's struggling and flip him ah the deadline. That sort of thing. If you trade for Valencia, not only have you squandered an OK asset in K-Rod in terms of not getting a young player (I realize they won't be getting a top 100 prospect for K-Rod), but you also spend time on Valencia and probably get nothing out of it.
  20. My how things have changed since I called him "the roidless Poo Holes."
  21. I like the idea of this trade. If you don't like the return, increase Toronto's package...I'm not sure who else they have in the system, though. I also think that Toronto may consider Garza, though I'm not sure they seem like a team to want to absorb his deal.
  22. Sure, but I'm saying you'd take the last 2-3 years of his downfall if you were in a competitive window. That's the cost of business with big contracts. Instead, you're just going to get those final 3 years sitting as a black hole after you rebuild.
  23. I don't think a 2018 target is unreasonable. We've had a significant talent infusion to the system from the last couple of drafts + international signings, and the Gallardo trade. I'm not expecting much other than salary relief/fringe guys for our in-season trades, but our offseason trades will likely bring talent as well, so that will likely put us ahead of the 5-year rebuilds that the Astros and Cubs have gone through. 2016 is a lost cause and likely 2017, but I could see a Bucks-like marked improvement in 2017/18 with a shot at the playoffs thereafter. But your second point is completely fair- they need to identify who is likely to still be an actual contributor in that 2018-ish window and should be willing to trade anyone that won't be. I'm fine if they don't do it now or in July, but I'd certainly hope that we see the Gomez/Segura combo moved between now and next Spring. Absolutely 2018 is a great date. I just think that Mark is going to try to hit 2018 while keeping a hold on Luc, Braun, and maybe whatever he gets for Gomez when he deals him too late (next year or even keeps him).
  24. The point of contention I keep having is "ton of money" - which, yes, it is in real life terms, but Braun is probably worth $10-15 million/year in baseball economy money. You have to overpay for top-flight players. There are a lot of players the Brewers have/had that have zero value and are costing them $5+ million/year. Braun's contract for the next 3 years is not a hindrance on the payroll if they want to actively compete. If one had the choice of "Braun at $15-20 million or no Braun" if they had the choice to cut anyone they wanted and wash their hands of the contract...I would keep Braun at that price if you're in a competitive window. I'd probably have cut Broxton, Lohse, Aramis, maybe Garza.
  25. If the Brewers were in a winning window, I would not call Braun's contract "bad for Milwaukee." It's still relatively affordable for a smaller market (some veteran inflation added), but the problem is that his 3 remaining "good" years out of the 5-6 he has left on his contract are going to be spent on a team that is either rebuilding or continuing to smolder in a fire of aging veterans.
