  1. Why would you want to buy a used Big Mac? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  2. Why let that 1 hit bother you? Check out this quote about Christy Mathewson from Wikipedia: Along with his brother Henry Mathewson, he holds the major league record for combined wins by brothers playing for the same team: Christy 373, Henry 0.
  3. Well done Boston - a few hints never hurt anybody.
  4. Hints to the remaining answers from my questions. Q #1 - The team involved has changed locations and neither player involved is in the HOF. Q #2 - 4 remaining - in alphabetical order: Player A: was born in a US possession that is no longer a US possession. Player B: reversed his number when he went to his new team.(Big Hint) Player C: had to take a different number for the second team that retired his number (not the second team he played on) because the number he wanted was already retired. Non-Player D: was a player for 14 seasons with a moderate career - he did not play on either of the teams that retired his number.
  5. This is all well and good, but how many times will he change his mind in 5 years? And BTW thanks for putting him in the same category as Favre - that's quite a compliment.
  6. How does David John Drew become JD Drew?
  7. I know you guys really don't care about the Cubs but an interesting thing happened in Cincinnati tonight. Carlos Zambrano, after striking out left handed against Micah Owings in his first at bat decided to bat right handed in the 4th inning and hit the first pitch just right of dead center over the 404 sign for the second run in a 2 - 1 win. His 100th win BTW.
  8. Fingers is correct Maddux has not yet had his number retired by the Braves.
  9. Question 1 - Dickey/Berra #8 is correct - there is 1 more Question 3 - Christy Mathewson indeed did not have a number and has an NY retired for him (same is true for John McGraw) Chuck Klein as stated above wore a mess of numbers for the Phillies and has an Old English P retired for him I messd up the last part of q#3. It was supposed to be Grover Alexander who has a block P retired by the Phillies Question #2 Aaron's #44 of course is correct and was the first one I knew you guys would get. Ryan is the only one who's number is retired by 3 teams - Angels, Rangers, Astros F Robinson is also correct - #20 by the Reds and Orioles There's a few more BTW Jackie Robinson is not a correct answer to #2. The Dodgers are the only team that retired his # 42. MLB retired it for all other teams.
  10. I know I'm absolutely right on that one. An INFIELD FLY is a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before two are out. The pitcher, catcher and any outfielder who stations himself in the infield on the play shall be considered infielders for the purpose of this rule. When it seems apparent that a batted ball will be an Infield Fly, the umpire shall immediately declare "Infield Fly" for the benefit of the runners. If the ball is near the baselines, the umpire shall declare "Infield Fly, if Fair." The ball is alive and runners may advance at the risk of the ball being caught, or retouch and advance after the ball is touched, the same as on any fly ball. If the hit becomes a foul ball, it is treated the same as any foul. If a declared Infield Fly is allowed to fall untouched to the ground, and bounces foul before passing first or third base, it is a foul ball. If a declared Infield Fly falls untouched to the ground outside the baseline, and bounces fair before passing first or third base, it is an Infield Fly. On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder_not by some arbitrary limitation such as the grass, or the base lines. The umpire must rule also that a ball is an infield fly, even if handled by an outfielder, if, in the umpire's judgment, the ball could have been as easily handled by an infielder. The infield fly is in no sense to be considered an appeal play. The umpire's judgment must govern, and the decision should be made immediately. When an infield fly rule is called, runners may advance at their own risk. If on an infield fly rule, the infielder intentionally drops a fair ball, the ball remains in play despite the provisions of Rule 6.05 (L). The infield fly rule takes precedence.
  11. There are a number of first names above not answered but I'll levae them alone because I had to look them up. Oh heck - Pujols and Cabrera are both Jose. I have three regarding retired numbers. A few weeks ago the Cubs retired the number 31 for both Fergie Jenkins and Greg Maddux. 1) How many other times has a team retired a single number for more than 1 player (Team/s players and number/s please) 2) Who are the players (and 1 non-player) that have had numbers retired by more than 1 team (Team/s players and number/s please) 3) What is unique about the numbers retired for Christy Mathewson (Giants), Christy Mathewson (Phillies), and Chuck Klein (Phillies).
  12. Been thinking about this and I have come to the (maybe faulty) conclusion that this is not possible. Once the runner on first passes the runner on second, he is declared out and therefore no longer are there runners on first and second and therefore the infield fly rule is no longer in effect. - There is no provision that states "before the ball is hit" or anything of the sort. There is a provision that could render an umpires declaration of " Infield fly - batter out" moot - the ball bounces untouched in front of the pitcher and kicks to foul territory making it a foul ball and therefore no out even though the ump has screamed "Batter out".
  13. No it wasn't edge of your seat but it definitely is edge of next season. Jack is on his death bed, Kim comes to a last minute rescue, Tony is dragged away kicking and screaming that Jack is a wuss after revealing that he turned bad to avenge his dead wife and unborn son, Wilson is in custody and Renee is ready to go "Jack" on him, Olivia is in custudy for her role in the killing of Hodges, and the President's personal life is falling apart because her son is dead, her daughter is arrested and her husband is really PO'd because she chose to do her job instead of his bidding. What more could you want? BTW how did those two goons watching Kim get a 7 inch knife and a gun past security? I think TSA really needs to investigate their procedures at Reagan Airport.
  14. Just face it - the game has changed. This past Sunday Fergie Jenkins and Greg Maddux had their common number 31 retired by the Cubs. From 1967 thru 1972 Fergie won 20 or more games each year. During that span he averaged 306 innings innings pitched and 23.3 complete games. How many of today's pitchers pitch more than 250 or 5 complete games?
  15. I will address the three team names from Chicago. I will not attempt to justify the name Cubs - none of you would really care anyway. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Bulls - The Chicago Bulls started out playing at the Chicago Amphitheatre which was located in the Chicago Stock yards, hence the name. Bears - When George Halas moved the team to Chicago from and dropped the name Staleys (named after the original co-owner the Staley Starch company) and signed a lease to play in Wrigley Field, he said, " I noted that football players are much bigger players than baseball players, so if baseball players are cubs, then football players must be bears."
  16. I agree with that previous sentiment Now if only Joe Morgan would follow him.
  17. Two movies come to mind, both happen to be science fiction. For the first, I'll just say 'Gort, Claatu virada nickto'. How many of us that grew up in the 50's don't remember those words from the original "the Day the Earth Stood Still?" A sci-fi thriller long before all the innovations that amp up today's thrillers. I recently heard someone comment that a good movie is one that you continue to think about after you leave the theater. I saw "2001: A Space Odyssey" in 1968 and I'm still thinking about it trying to figure out what happened and it's 8 years after it would have happened.
  18. Actually, you're a little late on this one. This started last July.
  19. Wait a minute. Isn't this borderline sacreligious to post on a Wisconsin based forum that someplace else has incredible cheese?
  20. With Easter fast approaching, I am reminded of that day when after arising so that the girls could hunt for and find all the eggs and baskets, the wife and I went back to sleep and let them play alone for a while (I think they were 7 and 5) Anyway when we got up for the day, breakfast was made; all the hardboiled eggs were peeled and set on plates for us. Yummm! As far as the difference between boys and girls - Girls - never had to worry about school work - but the peer pressure was like batting in the 9th with 2 out and 2 on and down by 1. Boys - never had to worry about friends (just give them a ball) but we knew every principal, vice principal, dean of students, etc. (besdies that he learned to hate the Packers real fast . http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif )
  21. How many guys are on the Pirates opening day roster that wouldn't be on anybody else's opening day roster? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  22. My 2 daughters are now 33 and 36 so I have been through the "war." From birth through 5th grade, don't worry - everything will be perfect. From 6th grade through high school - don't go near her, don't talk to her, don't even be seen with her.(It's OK she won't want to be seen with you either) When she's in college, just listen, don't offer any advice. After college life will be perfect again - and if you don't cry at her wedding, you are a big jerk!
  23. The answer to the original quiz #7 is 200 meter individual medley And on #5 I believe the line is: "Crisco, Bardohl, Vagisil, and if the umps are watching closely, I rub a little jalapeno up my nose..."
  24. I didn't even think about wine country, but will highly second the choice of Ferrari Carano though it may not be as beautiful in January as it was in August when I went. Another winery I liked was Trentadue. A lot of the wineries are busy and you won't get any personalized attention other than trying to get you to join their wine club. When I went to Trentadue, the 4 of us were the only ones there for a tasting. We got 2 tastings for the price of 1. After tasting the regular wine we then got to also taste some ports. The chocolate port was fabulous.
  25. What to do? 1 reason to get a car is an official 49 mile drive around the city. It's marked by signs (albeit not always very well - and we did get misplaced a couple of times) takes you past all the significant highlights. And you have to drive down Lombard street. Things: Fishermans' Wharf - be sure to partake of shellfish from street vendors and bread bowl clam chowder at Boudins Pier 39 - Outdoor mall Alcatraz - get tickets ahead of time (it WILL be a cold ride across the Bay) Travel the Golden Gate over to Sausalito - quaint village Gotta ride a cable car - Long wait to get on at end points but if you try to get on in the middle may be no room Restaurants: Please don't eat at any chain restaurants there are too many good locals Some recommendations: Anywhere in Chinatown - someone else may have a good recommendation Scoma's - on the Wharf - great seafood - Outside the restaurant is a sunset photo op with Golden Gate in background The Stninking Rose - if you love garlic - "We season our garlic with food!"
