  1. I would like to see us trade for David DeJesus, we will most likely use the buy-out on Cameron's contract, and I do not trust Iribarren, or Gwynn taking over in center, and I have not conceded to the fact that Gamel is bound for a corner outfield spot. DeJesus contract is very reasonable, at 3.6 million in 09, 4.7 in 2010, and a 6 million dollar option for 2011. DeJesus is a lefty bat that can get on base fairly regularly, and plays a pretty good center field. If we could somehow swing getting him without giving up J.J., or Escobar that would be awsome, esspecially if Gamel improves to the point where he can play a passable third base in the majors. The lineup would be very good on paper, with Weeks leading off, DeJesus, Braun, Fielder, Hart, Gamel, Hardy, Kendall, and the pitcher.
  2. The biggest weakness on this team that I see is the relief pitching. Relievers flame out from year to year, even during the season, and the Brewers already have a pretty weak bullpen. I have never been big on giving up alot for relivers since they can flame out, and do not have as big a role on a team, as a guy that plays everyday, or a starting pitcher. So in my opinion a guy like Brian Fuentes who so many teams are after already, is just not worth the price. So who is available, that will not cost an arm an a leg? J.P Riccardi has pretty much said they are sellers and they have an excess of pitchers if that is possible, so Tallet, Frasor, and Camp could possibly be had on the cheap. Other than that the only people I can think of that would be available that would not cost the brewers a top prospect would be Chad Bradford, Keith Foulke, and maybe Betancourt, and Ron Mahay. What relievers are available that could help us, but not require a ton of talent?
  3. mlbtraderumors.com, revised the starting pitcher market recently, there is really not many quality pitchers left that are for sure available. If the dodgers fall out of contention, Derek Lowe would be a great pitcher to get, he is on of the most undervalued pitchers, and is very durable, with a very reasonable contract. The other guys are either back of the rotation guys, like Maddux, and Wolf, have contract issues like Burnett, or either not very good, or very inconsistent. I would have to imagine that the phillies are going to pick up a starter, my guess would be Burnett. One other thing to consider is that Maddux has a no trade clause, and really does not want to leave San Diego, the only teams I could see him agreeing to go to would be the Braves, Cubs, or another west coast team.
  4. Jeff Borris, Barry Bonds agent is quoted in a USA today article, as saying that he has not talked to any team about Bonds, because all 30 teams have said they have no interest in him. Borris also says in the short article, "I can't believe he doesn't have a job. No one has offered even the minimum salary. He made the All-Star team last year, and there's no reason to believe he wouldn't have a repeat performance in 2008, except for the conspiracy against him." I have to agree with Borris, last year Bonds got on base 48% of the time, that is almost unheard of, he is still one of the top 25 hitters in the game. Sure he is not a very good fielder any more, but some would argue that he is better, or at least on par with Adam Dunn, and Carlos Lee, both of whom play in the national league, without the benefit of the designated hitter. The biggest excuse is that he is a cancer in the clubhouse. I just dont buy that his personality could have that big of an effect on other players performances, I doubt Rich Aurillia goes up to the plate thinking about what Bonds said to him the other day. A team like the Rays, are crazy not to add Bonds, since they could get alot more games out of him, because he could DH, which would save his legs. You can have a guy that will get on base a ton, and hit 25-35 homeruns over a whole season, and no team is willing to at least give him a shot for the league minimum? I find it hard to believe that there is not some sort of conspiracy against him here.
  5. Durham has actually been hitting quite well this year, esspecially for a second baseman. Durham is hitting a line of .293/.386/.421, he has a .351 BABIP though, so that batting average should come down some, but he still would be a better option than counsell filling in for weeks, and pinch hitting. I cant see us giving up very much at all, sense he would probably have a very limited role on this team, and he has a very large contract, making 7.5 million this year, so he would cost us about 3 million.
  6. By tipping the pitch, do you mean that the batter can see the pitchers grip, and then knows what pitch is coming? Can hitters really see the grip? I am not saying that I dont believe it is possible, just very suprising if true.
  7. Probably because he was clogging up the bases
  8. According to ESPN Inoa turned down 5 million dollars, and a major league deal from the Reds, as well as a 5.25 million dollar bonus from the Rangers.
  9. "Betancourt would be tantamount to Linebrink last year, so you're giving up Salome (our third best prospect this year, paralleling our #3 last year, Inman) and probably Gillespie for Betancourt, then getting CC for Green and Charlie V?" That is an odd way to look at it. You are giving up four players for two players, not two for one, and two for one. I do not think that Betancourt is worth Salome, and Gillespie, because I do not value relief pitchers that highly. My thinking was that maybe the Indians have lost hope in Betancourt, since he has had very poor results this year, with an ERA over 6, and 4 losses. Betancourt also is not a rental, and in my opinion still could be their best reliver, and could be our best reliever for this year, 2009, and 2010. In my proposed deal, betancourt was almost a throw in, without Betancourt I would have swapped Carlos Villanueva with Luis Pena, and Taylor Green with a Brad Nelson, or Chris Errecart. As for our punking next year, as you call it, I do not think that the majority of deals that dont involve Laporta or Gamel, hurt our chances much at all for next year. Carlos Villanueva was the only guy that I mentioned that would be contributing to the team next year, and I do not see him as having a ceiling higher than a #4, or #5 starter. The Brewers could certainly get by without him, and our system is deep enough to sustain the loss of the Salome, Brantley, and Escobar's of the world.
  10. I really like Toronto as a trade partner, they have a ton of starting pitching, and more on the way. Marcum is good, and I would not mind seeing him a brewers uniform at all, however I would prefer to get Dustin McGowan. After the year that Marcum is having, he will be more expensive to get, and I think that the difference between them is almost non existent, Marcum strikes out a few more batters, but McGowan gives up less homeruns.
  11. I would like to see Betancourt added into the deal. He might not cost that much, because he has had very poor results so far this year. He has pitched much better than it appears though. Other than his homerun rate, which is somewhat alarming, his other numbers such as K/G, BB/G are not to far off from what he normally puts up, and his GB% is the best it has been since 2005. I belive he will turn it around, esspecially in the weaker National League, and could be our best reliever for this year, and next year. I would not give up LaPorta, Gamel, or Jeffress, but from what I am hearing we could pull it off without including them. Would a deal of Salome, Green, GIllespie, and Villanueva be enough to get Betancourt, who is under contract through next year, with a 5.4 million club option for 2010, and C.C. Sabathia.
  12. Well not everyone can have your great sense of humor.
  13. I dont think it is a very good idea to have Laporta play against lefties only. That would only give Laporta something like 25% of the starts, he would be better served getting 550 PA down in Nashville as opposed to 250 in Milwaukee. Not to mention the fact that we have one of the top first basemen(offensivley) in the game for another 3 years. Fielder probably will not get more than 9 million, which you will not get his type of production any cheaper next year.
  14. Brian are you suggesting that a player would lie about his age?
  15. John Manuel of baseball america, has reported that 16 year old, pitcher Michel Inoa, from the Dominican Republic has signed a deal with the oakland athletics, that includes a 4.25 million dollar signing bonus. That is the richest bonus any amatuer international free-agent, not from cuba has ever received. In the article, the A's assistant GM David Frost is quoted with saying, "He has a fastball in the mid-90s, a loose arm, a breaking ball and changeup. He's as polished as you can imagine a 16-year-old being." Also in the article Inoa is described as being a once in a generation talent.
  16. If the A's do not get offered much for him, then they will not move him. He still has an option for next year, so there is no rush to get him off of their hands.
  17. From what I have heard, Gamel at least has the tools to stick at third. Gamel has decent range at third, which Braun never had. Gamel, just needs to improve his footwork, and he can stick at third. So far this year, Gamel has looked alot better, so I dont think it is much of a stretch that he will be passable at third sometime next year. As for who plays first once Fielder is gone, I think it has to be Laporta out of the players we currently have. Hart given his defensive ability in the outfield, would be a waste at first base. If Hart can play center field he is one of the top 3 offensive center fielders in the game, even in right field he is probably in the top 5. At first base, Hart would be just another guy. Gamel's bat is invaluable at third, so you have to give him every chance to prove he can play their. Laporta while he is not terrible in right field, probably will never be more than below average in right field, which leaves left field and first base.
  18. Lee is a good player, but he is not on Sabathia's level. Lee has never had a season with an OPS over 900, the one thing that Lee has going for him is his health, which drives his counting stats way up. With Sabathia, alot of teams are bidding for his services, so someone is going to be offering a ton, which in turn will force the Brewers to put Laporta, or Gamel in the deal to get him.
  19. If the Brewers could pull off a deal without adding one of those two, then I would be ok with it. It just seems very unlikely at this point that any deal would not have to include one of them.
  20. I guarentee that you would get a top pitching prospect for Fielder. Fielder is a guy that can potentially give a team an OPS of over 1.000. Look at the return that Teixera got, Neftali Feliz, who has the potential to be one of the best pitchers in recent memory, Jarrod Saltalamachia probably the best catching prospect at the time, Shortstop Elvis Andrus, who compares well to Alcides Escobar, he is a great defensive player, who does not hit a ton. Along with one of the best pitching prospects in the game, an MLB ready Catching prospect, who could be special, and a pretty good shortstop prospect, the Rangers also got the braves top left handed pitcher in Harrison, and a raw lefty named Beau Jones, who has a ton of potential. Fielder would get a top pitching prospect, and then some. I am not sure if Fielder would get quite as much as Teixera did, considering Teixera is a very great first baseman. Fielder however would for sure get a top tier pitching prospect, and a couple other nice players, that is certain.
