  1. One of the funniest part of this, is that in the book Gunslinger there is a passage about Rodgers's first couple camps and how he compared to Favre. There's a line that's something like this, based on the testimony of players on that team: "Favre had 'his guys'. Rodgers just threw the ball, it didn't matter who you were."
  2. This is quite a sell-off. Can't remember seeing a team just absolutely blow itself up at the deadline.
  3. I was kidding, but just mocking their passion for making the local team as hard as possible to watch.
  4. Nwora was 45th and depending on how the Bucks roster fills out, he could be a significant contributor next season.
  5. I think it's kinda clear now that there's sort of already an agreement in place that he's getting traded after this season.
  6. That and something people forget about Cobb is that he was drafted at 20. There's a lot of wear on him. I think this is still getting blown up too big. The Packers got him because Rodgers asked. They were able to make it work without any significant consequence financially and so it was ultimately benign to just go ahead and do it. And there's a chance he provides some value at a fairly low price. Gute being so blunt about it was actually pretty smart. Now if it goes poorly the Aaron Rodgers GM experiment can be out there for all to see when he's disgruntled in March and traded.
  7. I'm slightly worried about paying Adams, but this is possibly the greatest WR in franchise history and either the best or second best in the league, and an injury prone slot guy with a single 1,000-yard season seven years ago.
  8. I think everyone's mind has gone there. But there is enough talent on the team that it will be pretty easy to justify benching Cobb if he really sucks.
  9. The Patriots got very lucky with the timing of when Brady was up for extensions. It always happened to coincide with the team having a down season, him getting hurt, or JG being around AND having seen the field, so when those discussions took place, Brady wasn't at a point of high leverage. One of the last extensions he signed with NE was very clearly a "take this modest deal or you're gone" situation. There always more to that than TB just taking nice deals because he's a swell guy. He is also married to someone richer than he is. As far as Tampa goes, that entire thing happening at all was likely based on assurances that he would be special counsel to the GM. Much like Rodgers will be for somebody else next year.
  10. There's clearly a limit to what they're going to allow Rodgers to do in player acquisition and I'm just not too busted up if that means a slot WR that will be the 4th or 5th option when all is said and done. And quite possibly get hurt anyway. I don't think Cobb is on the Packers without Rodgers, I don't think that's even a question. But it's just a nothingburger move in the end for a guy that just might contribute enough anyway.
  11. I'm sure MLB would do everything possible to ensure that doesn't happen.
  12. St. Brown is probably as likely as Funchess to be out. He appeared to be on thin ice last season.
  13. Exactly. Rodgers would have to offer that up first, and with a specific reason in mind. If the Packers don't want his FA advice and haven't been warm to his "ideas," there is no reason that would ever have materialized.
  14. I think going into the year assuming a rookie WR will fill a slot WR void is a mistake. It's certainly possible, but it's extremely common for rookie WR to struggle and catch like 12 passes. It's usually a position that takes a couple seasons to adapt to from college to pro. I'm not in love with Randall Cobb, but mostly because we overpaid him years ago. I just think the Packers saw this as addressing a need and coincidentally pleasing Rodgers. I don't think they went out got a guy they don't like solely because of Rodgers.
  15. It's August. We're not picking up a DL for $5 million that will put us over the hump. Any such addition will be Howard Green-esque waiver wire fodder. This add is completely situational. It's not like there's an above average DL waiting to be picked up by the Packers for $5 million and a 6th round pick. He's a minor vet addition that fills a need, provides leadership and makes Rodgers a little less crabby. It's not like we traded a first for Julio Jones for Rodgers. It's fine.
  16. They're not going to bench Amari Rodgers for Randall Cobb if he's better. The reality is that a first-year WR seldom makes a significant impact and if I had to guess, it just means St. Brown or Funchess is getting cut. I don't think for a second they got Cobb solely for Rodgers. I think they probably thought it was a benign idea that might benefit them anyway. Tee Martin, Rodgers's dad, also coached Cobb at Kentucky. Cobb's old, and oft-hurt, but he's got a deep understanding of Rodgers and the offense that almost no first-year WR is going to have.
  17. It's much easier to make the financials work if said franchise QB has no qualms about taking huge pay cuts and contract restructuring to provide salary cap space to make that happen - Brady has done that repeatedly throughout his career in both New England and in Tampa. Rodgers most definitely hasn't. And what's the point of taking input/getting roster recommendationsabout about retaining aging veterans if the guy making the case for them doesn't want to rework his deal and the team is salary cap-strapped with obvious younger all pro-caliber players they need to extend very soon before risking losing them? Would I rather have a handful of aging wideouts and offensive lineman Rodgers is friends with on the roster next year, or would I rather give Jaire Alexander franchise CB money to play corner through his prime years in Green Bay? Not really a tough decision as a GM in my book.... I'm not Rodgers's biggest fan but I don't think we're in a position to say Rodgers has or hasn't been willing to take pay cuts. The team would have to approach him with that idea or at least be willing to hear his thoughts on a FA for him to broach it. From the sound of it, neither of those has happened. There would need to be a line of communication open for that to take place and it doesn't sound like it has ever existed.
  18. Being involved in FA and recruiting was one of his specific grievances though. I think the wheels were in motion and drafting Love expedited things. Once that happened, Rodgers reassessed the situation and felt like, ok, if this is where you are, let's both move on. Because a lot of these feelings were clearly present before Love was ever on the roster. I have to say that even though I still think he's wrong on most of things he brought up, I do see better where he's coming from after today. So I wish he had just said so 2 months ago.
  19. Safe to say that Brady got Gronk and AB in NE and Tampa. Likely was involved in getting Moss to New England from what I remember. This is where I think Rodgers has a point. It's not just saying sign this guy, sign that guy. It's that Brady can recruit guys to where he plays and if the financials work they can do it. But it doesn't sound like the Packers have even given Rodgers freedom to do even that. They just don't care for him to be involved at all. It's a bit puzzling to me why you wouldn't want Rodgers telling JJ Watt or something to come play here. And yeah, there were financial issues, but from the sounds of it, Rodgers was willing to work around those and that conversation didn't even take place. I don't think signing his washed up friends to feel-good deals was great for the Packers. But it is a little odd to me that you're not utilizing the best player in the league to recruit players.
  20. It's tough because Rodgers waffles in the midst of his own press conference between someone who sounds very reasonable and totally gets it, to in the next couple breaths just not understanding that it isn't something personal the GM is doing.
  21. Honestly, if I had to boil this whole thing down to a couple sentences, it's that Rodgers is as loyal as he is bitter, and he isn't really able to separate his personal relationships from his job. Even though he claims to understand it's a business, he has a very limited grasp of that side of things and part of the reason is that he's never had an actual job.
  22. Sort of, but as was pointed out to me when I made that point in this thread, Rodgers hasn't spent the last 4 years saying he wants to retire and continually saying how tired he is. He doesn't skip camp (usually) and fwiw seems to be a better-liked teammate at this stage of his career. Rodgers has, frankly, been better than Favre late in his career (pre-Vikings) too. Until recently you could say the roster was holding Rodgers back. There were several points where it started to feel like Favre's gambling was holding the team back. So the situations are similar, but they are more different than one might think. There's the whole thing too that Favre literally quit, then tried to come back. Not sure Rodgers is given the job in '08 if Favre doesn't retire.
  23. The Packers offered him the league minimum which was a bit over a million. Raiders offered 2/15 with $13mm guaranteed but I think he retired after one season, so in reality the Packers made a gesture that said "go away" but not much of an offer. They were still right though. Personally I thought the Packers were going to stink that year and needed to start blowing up the roster. Point I made earlier is that MVS catching 40 passes is what needed to start happening with the team at that point, not bringing Jordy back to have 500 yards and win 6 games.
  24. It's a complicated situation. I get where Rodgers is coming from, but he should be smart enough to know that he's excluded from some conversations because they know he's emotionally attached to these people and they are his friends. He should have the intellect to realize that sometimes they can't ask his opinion on everything and maybe even respect that they don't because they know it will upset him. It's weird because I get both sides of it. He's ticked off anyway, so in the end maybe you had nothing to lose by running it by him. It's a bit like asking a kid's dad if he should make the select team. You know what he's doing to say and he can't possibly give you a realistic opinion. But simultaneously, you alllllmost admire Rodgers for sticking up for his guys. He doesn't really have to do that.
