  1. There shouldn't be shame in it and there is probably less so now. But when I graduated and couldn't find a job for 9 months, I was living at home. Nothing was a punch in the gut quite like people asking where I was working, what my plans were, etc. My social circle was full of people who just waltzed right into a job or a big city or both, so that didn't help things...but I would say that yeah, there is probably still some stigma there, depending on where you are.
  2. I agree with the first part. As long as you pay your loans back, I don't care if you get a degree in sitting on the couch and watching tv. Fact is, those degrees are less likely to land a good paying job right out of college. I wish kids approached things moreso with the mentality of "what education options will result in a good paying job while maximizing my skill set" versus "what do I wanna be when I grow up!". Adults do a fine job of selling them that dream. I vividly remember having reservations about journalism and this was in the early 2000s. I'm not kidding you when I say that every adult I mentioned this to told me to chase my dreams. My parents, my professors, I even emailed some staff at the JS and they told me to shoot for the stars. Imagine how many people get similar advice. I wound up in business school post-grad and have a solid career. I realized upon graduating when I had no car, and the only journalism job I bothered to interview for offered $9/hr and the "benefit" of "being involved in every aspect of the industry" by letting me help fold the morning paper, that I was not cut out for it. Sold out and went corporate, every day I thank God I'm not a barista.
  3. I think when most people say they should be directed to trades they mean that should at least be presented as an option, which is not, or at least wasn't. Like I said, we had one kid do a plumbing apprenticeship, I believe his dad was a plumber, and if that kid wasn't around everyone ridiculed his plans.
  4. As a liberal arts degree holder who worked in marketing and then got an MBA, yes, that is 100% accurate.
  5. My mother was in medicine and ran a lot of studies. The #1 obstacle to getting subjects was people failing drug tests. People who are not around that kind of environment have an amazingly sheltered view of how common those environments are.
  6. The 2010 was a hell of a lot better defensively than 2011. The 2018 team was.
  7. Thought the first episode was pretty good, kept me interested.
  8. Which, based on the timeline, was actually well above the average debt load upon graduation. $26k was the exact average amount just a couple years ago. But average is misleading as we all know, the median would be a better measure.
  9. Study abroad isn't all that expensive depending on what you do. A lot of the schools simply charge the home tuition as part of the program and you just fly over there. Again with the live at home thing...that keeps being trotted out here as though it is an option for 100% of people and it's just not. This wasn't my experience but I knew people kicked out at 18 or parents that just didn't want a 20 year old living at their house for free. Then you have alcoholics and addicts that people really aren't in the mood to live with once they don't have to...I think you both are drastically overstating the % of people that refuse to do anything but go out of state. I would say that most people in a financial crunch go to a state school. You run into a problem with doctors or other specialized careers where getting into a top program actually does matter a lot. WI is lucky that it has UW med school but that is just in WI. You will probably disagree with me here and play the walking uphill both ways card, but I don't think money should be something that prevents a person from getting quality specialized education. If you are studying accounting then just go to UW-W, it is just not the simple when you get into law, medicine, etc...and the argument that they'll make so much money it doesn't matter it is just not true anymore. There are also less lucrative but "good" careers that require advanced degrees. Ex., things like social work, research fields, etc. But I recommend reading some of the subs on Reddit sometime...it is full of people driven to the brink from med school debt...they want to finish but don't know if they can because they owe a 4 BR house before they're even done. Even if you are a general practice MD, $250k is a major problem for anyone just starting out. The statement that you don't need to take on massive debt to get a degree in WI is true. I will concede that it is. It gets more complicated when you begin to talk about what that degree is in. This also assumes you get into Madison. I went to Whitefish Bay, and there were LOTS of extremely bright students who didn't get in. I believe at the time, class rank was used, I don't know if that's still the case. A 3.8 GPA in my class would've crushed you from getting into any school that used class rank. You wouldn't have been in the top 1/5 of the class. What about those that pursue higher ed later in life with families? There are just too many variables to boil this down to "live at home," and "they're irresponsible with money." I wish there would be some appreciation for the nuances of the conversation from the other side here.
  10. Yeah, I would attribute that bat hitting the trashcan video (since it is the only one at least so far) as more of the bench picked up a tell on the pitcher and was relaying that. That is on the pitcher. I have no idea if correct, but others were claiming the Astros had better hitting stats on the road, which would also discredit at least the effect of the cheating. But if getting signs to the batter is prevalent, another reason to pitch fast like Suter. Signs can't be relayed to the batter fast enough. They change the sign and it is picked up again almost immediately. That is a CF cam, it is not a genius in the dugout. While I agree that you cannot go from horrible to great just by stealing a sign, they deserve whatever is coming.
  11. They flexed GB-SF to SNF.
  12. Well no, but this is clearly not that hard to prove, so if they actually did do it, I'd just expect radio silence or a "we take this seriously" statement.
  13. Obviously won't happen but they should do the NCAA thing of stripping the title. Send a loud and clear message. It's awful, sorry, but if true, which is almost definitely is, it sucks. It was called out during that season and Finch gaslighted the whole thing which is even worse. Stealing the signs with a runner on is fine, a camera is lame as hell and should wipe out their title. IMO this is even clearly worse than NE taping practice.
  14. When has WI "required" that? That seems like an odd requirement and one that I definitely did not have, and I'm not THAT old, and I went to what is widely considered the #1 or #2 public high school in the state. Your district may have, but that doesn't mean WI does.
  15. They have people talking about the Brewers in November with the Packers 8-2. Well timed if nothing else. And opening the store, opening a new restaurant, they are just doing a good job of most things these days.
  16. I'm aware of the online surcharge because I took my MBA entirely online, however at least at UWW it still ends up being an incredible bargain if you need to get an MBA, frankly I paid the surcharge happily in exchange for not leaving my house. The internship credit cost doesn't make a lick of sense though. The school gets to outsource the cost of your seat in a class to whatever company or org you are doing it through. It isn't shocking when you think about it, just something I never even though of.
  17. I think I lean toward the Seahawks simply because I'd rather face a bad defense. I've seen much better Packers offenses struggle against top defenses in the postseason before and it's not pretty. I don't want to see MVS and Allen Lazard trying to move the chains in the NFC title game against that SF defense. I much prefer the odds of Rodgers finding some magic and putting up 30 on Seattle while hoping the Smiths can at least force Russ into a bad decision or two. I just see this team matching up better in that kind of game. I don't think he is as good a QB as Russ is at this point but he may not have to be to beat him. I would twist your question to whether you want to see if Rodgers can be better than Wilson once or can our defense be better than SF's once?To me that is an easy choice.
  18. It's still somehwat feasible that the Packers could to lose to SF and still end up ahead of them. They would be making it harder obviously, but it's not hard to find three potential losses on their schedule. Either way I think that's going to be an awesome game. Can't wait for it.
  19. The 49ers have @Saints, @Seahawks, @Ravens, vs. Packers, vs. Rams on the schedule. Their two "gimmies" are Arizona and Atlanta, neither of which are truly awful "bad" teams. The Seahawks schedule isn't much easier, but beating SF on the road was a big step. I don't know who I'd rather the Packers face anymore. I'm inclined to say Seattle because their defense isn't that good anymore, but Jimmy G is just not Russ and he would be a much smaller assignment to contain. Either way the push for HFA seems bigger now. Packers in the Super Bowl is a realistic goal, which is really amazing.
  20. Yeah, I think that would have been a mistake. They pushed Mandalorian hard so letting everybody kill it on the first day didn't make a lot of sense. I always feel dirty saying this but I never liked Star Wars. I found it really hard to get into and just kind of boring. But now my 6 y/o loves it so I'm trying again. I plan to start from scratch and watch all of the original trilogy and then the modern ones before the new ones comes out.
  21. Disney+ launched around 2am I guess. I checked it out briefly this morning, and holy content. It will definitely become the primary option for families. Really a great deal if you were able to lock in the 3-yr contract for $3.90 a month. There is just so much stuff, some of which I didn't even know they owned. Oddly looking forward to the World According to Jeff Goldblum.
  22. Has Barry been mentioned here? Absolutely love that show. Bill Hader is awesome. I watched Season 1 in one Saturday night.
  23. They do a great job for kids. I would rather sit down and see the game, but my reality is usually getting up in the 3rd inning, going to the Aurora play area, going to play the games in right field, etc., then if I'm lucky catching the end. I love when I'm able to take an adult, but my life is built around the family at this point and I'm rarely seeing old friends. Wife uses any trip to MP as an excuse to go out to dinner in Milwaukee and is pestering me about where I want to go by the 3rd inning and asking about leaving early. So not at all unlike taking a kid...
  24. Unpaid internships should be against the law. Another predatory practice. There is a minimum wage yet we can pay an intern $0 under the guise of them being volunteers. They are "volunteers" in that if they don't work for free they won't have a career. No one should be subjected to that, and the companies that do it should be ashamed. Hang on though - you have to pay for the credits when you take an internship for credit? I never did it, and always just assumed you took the internship and got the credits. It never dawned on me you had to pay for them. That seems insane to me. Where is the expense there that justifies the charge?
  25. Just buy yours kids a ticket.... don't make them buy them on the secondary market. They have tickets...they just don't want to sit for more than 2-3 innings. This schtick of yours, it was old a long time ago and is dumb.
