  1. I agree that it would be a very "inside the box" hire. But Fitzgerald's connection to Murphy may be the only reason he'd even consider an NFL job. He has strongly resisted NFL overtures in the past. He has done a great job at Northwestern given the difficult recruiting environment, but I'm not sure that makes him a solid NFL hire. Seems like very few college coaches make good NFL coaches.
  2. Hasn't Jones been given that chance? Both HHCD and Burnett left in the last two years. We were starting Williams and Brice... If he can't win a job there, I'm not sure he will. But I do agree with the CB situation. If they can hold on to Breeland (and King can stay healthy), CB is as deep as I can remember. I'm finishing up an evalutation of the roster and will be out soon. Should spark some interesting debate given this last 1.5 pages of comments...
  3. Wow. There is a LOT of heat on the Viking sideline between Cousins and Theilen! [sarcasm]Looks like the OC was to blame after all...[/sarcasm]
  4. Going for the hat trick... As expected, Pat Fitzgerald has been requested to interview, but no word on if he accepted.
  5. Cheering for my second favorite team... whomever is playing the Vikings!
  6. There haven't been many stinkers like this for the last 26 years...
  7. Not enough air under the deep balls is the problem. Heck, even under thrown balls would’ve been more productive = PI I tend to agree, but I've not seen MVS open deep that often this year either. Seems like his track speed doesn't translate that well to the field (at least not yet).
  8. Lion Game Summary so far: Defense looks like they are trying. Offense looks apathetic. ST looks pathetic. How did Zook come highly recommended?
  9. This is never a consideration for whether we sign players to an extension. If you can get a good player signed to a good (not overpaid) deal, you do it. If someone better comes along, talented players at good deals are easily traded. I can see signing a deal with Shaw so that buys out his arby years with maybe a first year of FA. Having cost certainty is a benefit to the Brewers for salary planning also.
  10. Oh don't even act like Junior Spivey is blameless in this debacle! Go the root of the problem at 2B!
  11. Sorry, for the double post, but I want to add a bit about DeFillipo. No, I'm not ready to have him be the HC, but I wouldn't blink if they named him OC. His "failure" in Minnesota shouldn't be weighed too heavily on his shoulders. I live in the Twin Cities (stupid decision... I know). And there is SO much talk about simplifying the offense for Cousins that its hillarious. About the mid-point of the season, all the sports announcers were talking about how confusing the offense was for Cousins and how much they needed the run game. Since DeFillipo left, everyone talks about the reduced number of plays and options to those plays have helped Cousins execute better (we will see how much "better" he will be against the Bears). Personally, I think they signed Cousins to be the incoming QB savior and when they found out that DeFillipo's offense was too complicated, one of them had to go. And it wasn't going to be their big FA QB addition. Granted, the scuttle among fans is that he needs to go too... I'd get some grief if the Packers signed DeFillipo, but I think he and Rodgers would be a great pairing. And we would have the last laugh...
  12. JB, I'm surprised at your agism... Age isn't the issue. Being creative, a good coach, and working with millenials is the key. But by your own criteria, isn’t a younger coach more likely to be creative and better with Millenials? I’m not dismissing older candidates (Belichick and Saban are both in their late 60s), but I’d prefer someone in the 40-60 age range. That’s when people are in their decision-making prime. I'm not sure how "my own criteria" leads to that conclusion. Each individual is unique in their creativity and abililty to lead a team. MM is 55 years old (within your 40-60 age critieria) and by all subjective criteria, he showed no creativity at the end. Yes, age and health steals and slows people's capabilities but that doesn't mean you simply exclude them. At age 91, Dick van Dyke danced up on a desk for Mary Poppins Returns and was 100x better than I could ever be at under half his age. My point was just because Fox failed with the Bears doesn't mean Caldwell would fail with the Packers. Pairing Caldwell with John DeFilippo and Pettine (OC and DC) would be very interesting to me; mixing some old school and new school ideas together. Let Caldwell patrol the sidelines and be the sideline general, while DeFilippo and Pettine call the plays from the booth. Pagano could be good too, but in general, I'm not in favor of a defensive minded HC.
  13. Earlier in his career he was benched for Mark Brunell for bad performance (there was a debate for a while as to who should be the starter).
  14. Thon is Tony Snell stuck in a seven foot body. In fact, I often confuse the two out there until I notice the height difference. Their skin tone is very similar, but both also have very long arms with sharp bony elbows that go everywhere when then run around. Hair cut is even similar (from a TV viewer perspective).
  15. I noticed he was shooting a lot of mid-range jumpers today instead of the heavy 3-ptr approach. I wonder if Budenholzer let him go back to his comfort zone?
  16. DJ Wilson is having a game tonight! A career night to be specific. He is playing with a lot of energy, grabbing all kinds of rebounds and playing good defense to boot. Its just one game, but its good to see. If he can keep up even a small part of this, he will be a very useful role player.
  17. The Jets QB was impressive too. Not that the Packer D is anything special this year, but he was throwing a nice ball on Sunday; Strong arm, accurate, finding the open WR (which may have been easy against our 4th string CBs).
  18. JB, I'm surprised at your agism... Age isn't the issue. Being creative, a good coach, and working with millenials is the key.
  19. I'm going to say no even at the vet min. I loved what Lucroy was for us, but he isn't that player anymore. His last two seasons were almost identical outside of Colorado: 2017: .242/.297/.338/.635 2018: .241/.291/.325/.617 Perhaps if you consider him a backup catcher, but I don't know that Pina is clearly a starter. I'm not 100% sure if Grandal is the "right" catcher to sign, but I wouldn't be concerned with the draft pick compensation if he is... We have a team built for the next 2-3 years (at least). Time to shore up the holes and win a crown rather than continual fight for a playoff spot.
  20. One can only hope!
  21. Here is hoping he gets his much-deserved shot at the MLB level!
  22. I'm sure someone would. He isn't a lock to make the majors. You basically traded a tiny chance of a great player, small chance of a good player but most likely a bust of the future for a certain chance of a decent player today.
  23. But maybe it still will. Maybe he won't ever amount to anything and he will waste a roster spot. This will be an annual problem for the Brewers for quite a while. We have a lot of C+ types that we will risk exposing in the draft because we don't have enough 40 man spots. I'm sure we will lose some ok players at times, but most of the time Rule 5 players don't amount to much.
  24. BrewCrewBall has an interesting articleabout the worth of the pick. I hate giving up picks because of the upside, but Claudio will be better than the typical #40 pick. Looking historically at the success rate of the 40th overall pick, only 18 of the 54 players selected with that pick have played in the majors. Of those 18, only nine have a positive WAR according to Baseball Reference. So, just 17% of the players drafted in that round have had some value at the highest level. At a 5.2 career WAR, Claudio would be the sixth best player drafted at #40 overall.
  25. A LOOGY is probably better than the typical #39 pick but it still is a bit tough to concede it. You need a lot of chances to find the impact players so giving up one chance is a bit hard.
