  1. [sarcasm]TROLL!! Kick him out![/sarcasm] But unfortunately true...
  2. Has Counsell ever uttered the words "gritty"? Or are we stuck on Ned Yost re-runs? There is a big difference in a star catcher in his prime and a back-up infielder that is happy to have a job (for now).
  3. How long did we "own" Tim Dillard's rights? He has been with the team for 12 seasons. I'm not sure how many times he resigned of his own free will vs. we owning his rights. But its been a long time. If there ever is a guy setup to be the BP equivalent to Bob Uecker...
  4. He will be 32 in June. I doubt he makes sense for us since we will need to replace him by the time we start competing.
  5. I think there's an argument to be made that if you have talented scouting and farm directors, you'll succeed long term regardless of where you draft in any given year. Of course, it helps if you have access to other team's scouting files, too...
  6. Thats a really good article, great find. He makes a good point, but his writing style gave me a headache. Its like a beagle chasing a herd of rabbits.
  7. But can you say it?
  8. There is zero chance that Stearns moves us to Miami! But it is too bad that he doesn't have better legs...
  9. Do people think Anderson is a lock at the MLB level over Davies? He certainly has more innings, but it seemed that Davies was pretty much done with the AAA level. Does Anderson have any MiLB options?
  10. Agreed. There seem to be a lot of people ahead of Peterson right now. Add in the fact that he already got a MLB shot with the Brewers and I'd think he would want to look elsewhere.
  11. I'm not sure how Attanasio was stuck with DM. I'm sure DM knew his options and going out "quietly" while remaining part of the organization was a better option than being flat fired. I'm not saying Mark would've fired DM, but its certainly an option. And if both of them knew DM wasn't going to be around for the entire rebuild, then that really only makes sense to start with someone who would be.
  12. I wouldn't think they would include Garza in the On Deck event if they didn't expect him to be an SP. Or said another way, I doubt Garza would join if he didn't feel that he was going to be a SP this year.
  13. Grading the Graders! Anyone can predict the weather, but how often do they go back to see how accurate they are. With advanced metrics being in vogue, one would think that someone is looking at this. Teams shouldn't be spending millions of dollars on the advice of their scouts without having an objective way of grading their performance.
  14. What is a targeted approach? I would think "spending more" to get a couple specific higher ranked players rather than a high volume of possible break-out players (i.e. shot gun).
  15. I am assuming (never ASSume!) that the people doing the scouting at least have some credibility in ranking players. They won't be right on all "55" players, nor all "45" players (nor A, B, Cs for Sickel's ratings or 20/80 for stuff either). But I would imagine that any rating system that is worth using at all has some credibility of its predictions. Just being a 55 alone doesn't increase your risk. A 55 with Extreme rating is going to be the same riskiness of a 45 with Extreme rating. Except that a 55 might "fall" to a 45 and is still useful. If a 45 falls, its to an organizational soldier level and not useful at the MLB level. Or were you going back to the "55+Extreme" vs "45+Medium" question? -> I would still go back to the origin of the "Extreme" rating. Extreme due to distance from the MLB level wouldn't concern me. Nor does it seem to concern DS, as he has been busy acquiring higher talent levels that are at A-ball or under. If its Extreme due to health, then its something to be more concerned about. No way do you want a roster full of medical cases. A few to take a chance on are fine, but not most of them.
  16. though I also think 45 is more like a 0.5 WAR player. I wasn't trying to get too fine with the "0 WAR" comment, just trying to describe the type of player. 0.5 WAR is essentially the same to my point. If you want to win the WS, you need a roster full of 2-8 WAR type players. Of course you aren't going to have everyone doing that. And you might live with someone at the 0-2 WAR level for a short period of time. But you should always be trying to replace those type of players (note that bench/BP players' WAR numbers will have a different expectation, but similarly adjusted for PT). Sure, a player that is a 45 can become a 55 and vice versa. That isn't really the point either. Statistically, I would expect you will have a better shot having a 55 in the minors become a 55 in the majors than a 45 becoming a 55. Given the explanation of the risk factors, there are only two factors that concern me for risk: - Injury - Someone close to the bigs without realizing the potential in production. Seems that most guys will be ranked risky due to distance from the MLB level. And while, I understand the need to show that "risk", its really only useful if you are rating one MiLB farm against another. It doesn't represent a true risk since all players need to start at the bottom (just about all of them).
  17. I would be pretty disappointed if Cravy and Burgos were ahead of Houser at AAA.
  18. I guess what I'm trying to get at is, is it better to have more 55 grade/Extreme risk players, or more 45/Medium players? If "55" means a MLB quality starter and a "45" represents a 0 WAR type player, then certainly the 55 type players. The 45 grade players should be pretty plentiful.
  19. I think the Wagner/Anderson swap was needed to bring back Diaz. Wagner has more upside, but getting Anderson back lessens the loss. I don't think Segura by himself would've made a Hill/Diaz trade very fair.
  20. I don't think you can hold a broken toe and a concussion against him. There is a huge difference between a broken toe and a concussion. When a player starts missing a large period of time, it gets to be a bit worrisome. Corey Koskie is an extreme example, but certainly something people are leery of these days. Good to hear he is working out, but just the fact that they didn't have him catch again has to make some people pause when considering making a big trade for him.
  21. Both Denver and especially Detroit are much larger metro areas to support it. At Appleton and Beloit (both A-ball), the average attendance to support the team is under 4,000 fans. AAA is typically double the attendance. Might not be much, but I really doubt the Brewers would support (let alone encourage) having 3 minor league teams in proximity (2 hours drive or less) to Milwaukee. Metro Populations: Milwaukee: 1.57M + Madison: 0.62M Denver: 2.75M + Colorado Springs: 0.69M Detroit: 4.29M + Toledo: 0.60M
  22. Huh... I forgot that the Gallardo trade happened that late in the offseason. Other GMs will, of course, use his 2015 offensive numbers concussion to try to bargain for a cheaper price tag Fixed. His numbers being down pale in comparison to the risk of not coming back from that concussion.
  23. I'd spend a lot less time on BF.net and maybe get more work done!
  24. There's part of me that wants to believe she'll be Luke's daughter. That Luke saved her from the Ren destruction of his Jedi teachings. I thought the movie set it up to be quite obvious. Part of me hopes she isn't Luke's daughter, because it would mean that the authors have set this up rather obviously, and have no ability to surprise anyone. One friend of mine thinks they will be lots of surprises in the next one. I think they will title it, "The First Order strikes Back" and Luke will tell Rey, "Rey...I'm your Father".
