  1. Mike Bates isn't expecting anythingeither. In this case, fines don't do enough to convey the severity of what Correa did as a representative of the Cardinals. He accessed information related to the amateur draft, so it would be a measure of poetic justice for Manfred to strip St. Louis of some of their high draft choices, and (if possible) prevent them from benefitting from free agent compensation or participating in the competitive balance pool of picks between the first and second rounds. The Cardinals may have enjoyed a competitive advantage, and the only fair remedy is to put them at a disadvantage for a couple years going forward. But just like I'm quickly losing hope that this Commissioner will step up and take any kind of definitive action to address domestic violence in his game, and just like he refused to mandate clubs make efforts to protect fans near the field of play, I suspect he's not going to act meaningfully here either. Whether he is feckless or simply meticulous and cautious to a fault, Rob Manfred has done nothing to inspire confidence this offseason. Primarily because, outside of burning Pete Rose down to his foundation, he's done nothing.
  2. This is good news. For no apparent reason, I've chosen Pinto as my barely has a chance, quasi interesting person to watch this spring. He was bad last year, but I'm guessing will bounce back to the middle this year. Might be nothing, but you have to have someone to cheer for. It seems we have a lot of mediocre depth at certain positions Fixed. We are deep in players, but shallow in talent. There will be one or two guys that break out of the AAAA mold and make a nice career for themselves, but really not a lot of sure fire guys.
  3. [sarcasm]Come on! We can do better than that! I goal should always to be #1.[/sarcasm]
  4. Otherwise, who cares? All of us fanatical die-hard, arm-chair GM fans.
  5. I'd even bet that each player beats those projections too.
  6. I can promise you there is not a pitcher in the league that would rather face Braun than Carter. No one is arguing that. Its comparing Braun's lineup protection. Who "protects" him better? Carter or Ramirez? And for the last few years, that has been close. So the expectation is that it won't change much. But more likely that Davis is hitting behind Braun (assuming he isn't traded).
  7. BrewCrewball has a good article on the SP plans. Davies is neck-and-neck with Nelson for the lowest Steamer projections, though none of those are pretty: 1. Jimmy Nelson (27) - 4.28 ERA, 188 IP, 20.2 K%, 8.1 BB%, 2.4 fWAR 2. Matt Garza (32) - 4.49 ERA, 163 IP, 17.6 K%, 7.4 BB%, 1.4 fWAR 3. Wily Peralta (27) - 4.50 ERA, 173 IP, 16.2 K%, 7.5 BB%, 1.6 fWAR 4. Taylor Jungmann (26) - 4.68 ERA, 138 IP, 19.3 K%, 9.8 BB%, 1.1 fWAR 5. Zach Davies (23) - 4.30 ERA, 120 IP, 18.1 K%, 8.5 BB%, 1.3 fWAR Edit: Added Lopez's steamer projections for comparison's sake: Jorge Lopez (23 - Feb 10) - 4.47 ERA, 64.0 IP, 19.1 K%, 9.3 BB%, 0.6 fWAR
  8. Peralta, Nelson, Jungmann, Davies, López... hell, Garza might well slot in as the #5 SP all season. I'd be giving Garza a long leash this year to see if anything is salvageable after last year. There is no reason to have Lopez, Arcia nor Maverick up before the All-Start break. And very little reason before Sept.
  9. It's not so much that they want you to go to the game, it's that MLB is making gobs of money on TV deals. Going to the game was how it all started (the acorn of sense). But its changed into making gobs of money now, which leads to the nonsensical rules of today.
  10. If he didn't have a gun for an arm, he wouldn't have sniffed the majors. He was a decent hitter (for a catcher) when he first came up, but he has been pretty bad the last few years. Edit: Actually looks like he is on schedule for a good year: 2012 .266 .321 .408 .729 2013 .169 .236 .284 .520 2014 .234 .320 .387 .707 2015 .210 .282 .293 .575
  11. How deep is the batter's box again? It looks like he would be playing T-ball off (or with) the catcher's head.
  12. I remember when Luc was called up in the middle of a season. A lot was made about the transition period; learning pitchers, signs, game plans, tendencies, etc... There were a few in-game mistakes in that transition time. Then a month later, no one brought it up again. Its not like its an insurmountable task.
  13. There is an acorn of sense in the TV restrictions, buried un a mountain of stupidity and greed. It starts off with wanting the local people to show up at the game (or only watching it if sufficient attendance occurs). But then the definition of local becomes absurd. My in-laws (in NW Iowa) are blacked out. Its an 8 hour drive to Milwaukee, but they are considered "local". Not to mention the whole area is Twins and KC fans... Pile on if you buy MLB ticket for satellite or streaming, you are actually paying for it. So its not a ticket sale, but you are still spending money that will go to that team. What ever to make a buck...
  14. You can't really compare the draft to international FA. The draft has limitations with penalties for going over. If it was a free for all type draft(like the NFL years back) there would be ridiculous contracts for these players. But in a way yes it is a lot of money to burn too. The Dodgers can take many many gambles other teams just can't rationalize. Fair point. If you have it, spend it to get talent.
  15. I guess that is what I'm asking. But I didn't realize they had 7-10 days. I'm assuming they would prefer to him.
  16. I'm assuming that since no one claimed Pinto, he remains our property in the minors, right?
  17. I wonder how they translated Po's name in Germany. In German, "Po" is a slang term for butt.
  18. Also, as far as Rey, I think its quite obvious that she is Luke's daughter: - The desert planet origin - The white clothing style - The quite obvious Padme' Amidala omage (hair style, shooting style, looks) -> Surpised no one mentioned this yet. - She is the only one that goes to find Luke. As far as Snoke goes, we will find out that this is what happens between the Hobbit and LOTR when Gollum owns the ring. More parallels to the original SWs and TFA: - Luke is Rey but flys the Millinium Falcon with Chewy. The main force based hero that was orphaned on a desert planet. - Leia is now an ace X-wing pilot Po. (Spunky, give it all you got, fully dedicated got he Rebellion,) - Chewy is Chewy - actually did more "acting" this time. - Han is Finn (self serving, self-protector that comes back to save Luke/Rey), but no MF to fly. - Obi Wan is Han Solo (father figure that sacrifices himself to the evil villian - someone he knows, raised and feels failure due to that person going to the dark side)
  19. Ok, I finally saw it last Friday with my kids and after the accolades on the movie, I as VERY disappointed. What I liked: - Excellent cinamatography and chase scenes - I do like Rey and Finn, but not so much with Po or Ren (I actually don't like him as an actor period). - Harrison Ford's one liners were the best part of the movie han's down! What I didn't: - Obvious, Obvious, Obvious. No surprise about Harrison Ford dying. Nothing in the movie was a shock at all... not even a little bit. - Everything was rushed. Massively rushed. Rey and Finn falling in love instantly. The Death Planet (whatever, I don't care) destruction. Rey seeing Han as a "father figure" after knowing him 20 min. Everyone becomes a hero without any training or hard work. Microwave Jedis. - Unbelievable:The sanitation storm trooper knows all the inner workings of the ENTIRE station. And the Rebels instantly believe him (no spy thoughts?) Rey is the only one to go see Luke... didn't Leia miss him? Why would Luke trust Rey? Not even Chewy? - No new score. Just recycled ANH music, which is classic, but why nothing new? No iconic songs at all. - Major recycled plot from ANH. Orphaned teen on a desert planet escapes to go on to be the big winner? Father figure that leads her/him is killed in front of him/her. This wasn't an omage, it was a badly done plagiarism job. - Ren's light saber was dumb. On a broadsword, those crossguards are to protect your hands. you don't put little lightsabers out where you are going to be burning your wrists as you swing the saber. That was obviously a Disney ploy to see toys and not a legit movie need. Overall, this just looked like the writers were in a major hurry to hand-off to the next generation. The story was paperthin, no development, rush from one adrenalin filled event to another with no actual build up between them. If this movie was fully stand alone, it would've been OK. But given the hype and past of SW movies, I thought it was the worst one yet. Disney failed without Lucas.
  20. I'm guessing that Davis will be higher in the order. But Davis' OBP isn't great, so if Carter follows there are lower chances of men on base. Thus Davis Lucroy Carter makes more sense. Probably not much difference, but...
