  1. Those locations aren't necessarily getting a discount, but Milwaukee needs to pay more to attract a player. There are a small sample of players that pick location based on city or chance to win a WS. 99% of the time, everyone has to "pay more" to attract a player, because 99% of the time, players take the biggest contract period.
  2. That crossed my mind also, but its better than deciding he DOES need surgery. At least now, there is only a 50/50 chance he actually needs it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  3. This is a team that just spent $36 million so they don't have to rely on a rookie coming off of a .337/.413/.583 year at AAA to play 3B. In my opinion that will prove to be a mistake but it is what it is. I'm a big Green fan, but I think relying on both Green and Gamel to make the jump to the MLB level is a mistake also. I think its a good idea to let Green play part time and Gamel mostly full time. If Gamel flops and Green is hitting, then Ramirez can move over to 1B. But my point on Gindl/Schafer was referencing someone saying we needed a OFer for 2 months, then cut him. I was pointing out another option.
  4. If bench players are getting $3M/year (JHJ), I'm not so sure how much of this is overpaying... We're Milwaukee. We need to overpay to get people here. I don't see too many places getting a discount because of the nightlife. All things being equal, some players will pick Florida or NY or CA over Milwaukee, while others might avoid them like the plague. 99% of the time, it comes down to contract plain and simple.
  5. I find it ironic that you call him racist for throwing banana chips, yet you call him a hillbilly. Since he is from Florida, that would generally mean you are using it as a slur based on his lifestyle. Hmmmm.... Looks like Adam Jones said it best: "He's not a redneck racist; his beliefs are his beliefs," Jones says. "Their relationship is uncanny, and Pie ribs him just as much. I don't think Luke means any racist thing by it. Trust me, if I see racism, I'll say some s---. Quickly.
  6. If Gindl or Schafer make the team out of ST, you can simply send them down to AAA once Braun comes back.
  7. 5 games is statistical noise. The standard deviation (I think that's the proper term) is 3 games. Statistical noise is a failure in a measurement tool. If a runner runs a 40 yard dash and 10 scouts come up with 10 different times, its statistical noise. My statement is saying that the measurement tool (pythagorean theory) isn't very accurate, as it can be effected by various things (as Ender pointed out). Its a rule of thumb to go by. The bad luck part probably hit, if Braun is out 50 games. Otherwise, this year's and last year's teams are shaping up to be quite similar.
  8. agent39, calling agent39. Brewers have a rogue pitcher that needs to be corralled before Boras gets near him...
  9. Good news on Manzanillo: RHP Santo Manzanillo, considered a rising prospect in the farm system, won’t need surgery on the shoulder injury he suffered in an auto accident in the Dominican Republic. Manzanillo traveled to Milwaukee to be examined by team physician William Raasch, who determined physical therapy would solve the issue.
  10. So the Wolfotarras era may continue. He hasn't made it out of ST yet. Perhaps they aren't ready to bank on Maldonado, but if he has a big ST...
  11. Ok, thanks. Bad assumption on my part of it being a predictive number from the pre-season. Still, its only a rule of thumb and 5 games seems like "noise" to me.
  12. Basically an average short reliever. Nah, he is 6'6", so only Loe can call him a short reliever. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  13. Let's at least develop a hatred-softening nickname for him - remember how "Diego" helped some of us overcome the Jim Edmonds acquisition. We've got ample time to come up with something suitable. Just so it isn't "Dora." http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Our Pythagorean expectation from last year is 91 wins so we were 5 wins over. Luck could turn bad this year and we end up 5 wins under. That puts us at 86. Or the pythagorean theory isn't 100% accurate (the baseball one, the geometry on is based on real science). The baseball one is only a rule of thumb, not gospel. Especially when certain events (Nyger Morgan + KRod additions) were probably not included in the calculation.
  14. I'm fearing that Boras got a hold of him prior to his contract year, but I'm holding out hope that its Josh from DDSM!
  15. ARam just got my generic Cub-hate. I never had anything personal against him.
  16. I don't expect more than a line about such a minor transaction, but triple crown stats? Explain please. I'm missing where TH said anything about triple crown...
  17. 3 former Brewers on this monumental list And one possible future one (Mark DeRosa)
  18. Now if he's more attractive to teams on a one year contract (which you and I disagree on) and he can't get a 3-year deal for what he thinks he's worth, why not take this and roll the dice? The whole signing the extension premise is based on making him more attractive to another team (see my OP about working it out with the other team). If it doesn't, then no reason for an extension. I'm not sure KRod is a slam dunk to get $7M per season for the next two. ($13M + $7M +$7M for $27M). Injuries, bad year, even an ERA of 3 might spoil that chance. I guess it depends on how badly he want to close. Maybe he takes a lesser one year deal to make it easier to trade him (doubtful with Boras, though). If we trade KRod for 1yr/$13M, you either have to eat salary or trade him for a low rated A-ball player (like how we got him).
  19. This could get better if Yuni signs with St. Louis. ...for 1st base.
  20. I'm not sure why KRod would take a deal like that when he can make half of that in one year from arbitration and then try again as a free agent after the season. - Because he wants to be a closer. He doesn't get that here. - Because he might not get closer money next year. Why isn't he trade bait on a 1 year deal? He could be. I'm just speculating that someone might be more interested if the cost per year is lower. And might offer up more in a trade if its not a one year rental. If there were a team out there willing to give him that, Boras would have found them already. They didn't get it yet, but there is a lot more of the offseason to go. They were up against an arby deadline, so they took that. Plus, I don't think you can sign and trade players like that in MLB (other than arby deals). This I don't know. Just speculating.
  21. If you can convince KRod to sign for a reasonable closer's salary (3yr/$24-27M), you could turn him into trade bait for a SS. His motivation is still to be a closer, so if they get a decent deal to do so, he might go for it... But I wouldn't sign him until I had a handshake agreement with some team.
  22. I have to wonder, will St. Louis fans react the same way about Pujols leaving, that Cleveland did when Lebron left? Pujols didn't get an ESPN special...
  23. He must like being in white and red uniforms... But you have to see the big picture for LAAofA. Now they can make a movie sequel called "Angels in the Infield".
  24. Ok, options that have been discussed: 1) Arbitration gives KRod a 1yr $13M deal 2) Cut KRod and pay $2-3M But what about 3) Sign him to a longer term deal (3/$27M) and trade him to a team that needs a closer. Obviously, we would want to work out terms of the deal with the team that wants him. But if he accepts a lower yearly deal, he becomes far more trade-able.
  25. I can see the Onion article now: Florida Marlins sign all MLB Free agents: Wins next 5 World Series by default because no one else has enough players to field a team!
