  1. Moving the Brewers to the NL: 1) Boosted attendance at a time the product on the field stunk. 2) Allows the team to have a lower payroll. No full time DH to pay for, which is generally more costly than a bench player or BP guy. 3) It was no secret that Selig wanted an NL team in Milwaukee since the Braves left. Again, I'm not complaining about the move. I prefer the Brewers in the NL actually (and all divisions should be equal to be fair). I can see some people in the media bringing it up, however. That is all I'm saying. I was trying to figure out if the Astros/Ranger rivalry would be good or bad. I would imagine many people in Texas to cheer for both (one NL, one AL). But now the becomes more difficult. The Brewers vs. Cubs/Cardinals/Twins are pretty natural rivalries based on state lines. But Texans are pretty loyal to Texas.
  2. If they don't want him to pitch in St. Louis or SF, they could just use someone else. The BP is normally pretty loaded early in the season due to many early days off. Nor does it make much sense to pitch in cooler conditions to get used to pitching in cooler conditions. The only real difference is making sure you warm up really well so you don't hurt anything. Giving more chances for MR to hurt himself by forcing him to pitch in cooler weather just doesn't make sense to me. The reality of the situation is that MR will have all of spring training to make the roster, then 8 (?) days left on his suspension. He will make it or not based on ST.
  3. Seeing that the Brewers changed leagues about 15 years ago, I think any correlation at this point is pretty spurious. I'm not sure if its fair or not, but you will hear it. He created the imbalance... now he is undoing it. If I'm correct, Carlos' contract will be done by after next season - so he doesn't get to DH next year. Why must you spoil my fun with the facts? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  4. Selig will not look good through this. Moving the Brewers to the NL and then someone else out smacks of favoritism, which is a bad thing for the Commish. Granted, I prefer the NL myself... Although, the Astros won't have to trade El Caballo now... They can continue paying $18M/yr for a .750 DH.
  5. What good would that do? Mark needs to pitch in games. Being on IR (again) doesn't really help him. And the Brewers have never done a "fake" injury rehab to my knowledge. He will have all ST (prior to his final suspension games) to prove to the Brewers if he can make it in the BP or not.
  6. News that Schafer had wrist inflammation during the AFL. Then returned to hit 2 triples. Given that the AFL normally has pretty good hitting, I'd say that Gennett's numbers merely indicate that this A+ numbers were influenced by the heavy air at Brevard. He continues to hit, but I'm not ready to trade Rickie yet...
  7. That was a really nice write up. I'm not sure how TLB got through it in 15 minutes... took me way longer! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I do have a couple comments/questions based on what you wrote: 1) You made a couple comments about lack of power with someone in the FSL (Gennett for example). Traditionally, the FSL was very poor on power, especially on RH bats. So Gennett hitting SLGing 406 is actually pretty impressive to me (compared to 436 in low-A) 2) You made a couple comments about a SS growing too tall for the position. I'm assuming you are equating height to lack of range? Or what did you mean by that? 3) Why no love for Martin Maldonado? I would say at worst, he should rate above Roberts and Garfield. You noted that he would be the best defensive prospect if considered him a prospect. And he has shown more hitting ability at a higher level then either of those two. Also: Fiers has always been an afterthought to most scouts, simply because the guy doesn’t have elite (or even good) stuff, but if “know-how-to-pitchery” was a tool he’d have an 80. Glad to have you on board. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. I'm guessing a late April-early May call-up. Mark has no options left. So after finishing his suspension, he would need to be on the 25-man or waived. If waived, I'd think some team would take a shot on the guy for their BP.
  9. That adds a unique twist to the Brewer/Cardinal rivalry. Didn't see that coming at all. The real question is whether he will bean-b.. ah, pitch inside to opposing teams in order to protect Albert. Or whether Albert comes back at all...
  10. I didn't realize there was still a plan to keep him as a starter. He was starting in the minors (when not injured) before he got suspended. I would agree that you break him in at the MLB level in the BP. Give him a couple years of 50-60 innings and if he does that well, he can have a chance to go back to starting (kind of like the Twins did with Santana). If he still has some injury issues, then you just keep him there.
  11. As a point of comparison, Counsell made $2.1M in 2010 and $1.4M last year. Back in 2007-08, he made $2.8M per year. Hairston made $2M last year, so I would guess it would take more now.
  12. If the Brewers sign/trade for a 1B (more than a backup), Gamel will ultimately be traded. If they aren't going to give him a shot now, his trade value will only drop as they wait.
  13. Make sure the mitt is on his right hand. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  14. We'd have YoGa and YoCe!! Yes, but needing we are YoDa.
  15. then play Green at 2B, his natural position. I thought his range was pretty limited. And his arm seems fine at 3B. What makes you think its his natural position?
  16. Milwaukee doesn't hold a candle to NYC (or San Fran -- also likely in the market for a SS -- , etc.), if that's a factor he'd weigh. Those things are greatly a matter of opinion. Personally, no amount of money would get me to move to NYC or SF. (Now, if I were an MLB player and only had 30 markets to choose from, I wouldn't be quite so final on that, but they wouldn't be my first choices). Many guys are signed by GB and comment on how they like the small-town atmosphere. For some, they go nuts if they don't have a big party scene.
  17. I know I've read some, but not all of this thread, so forgive me if I re-hash something. Yahoo sports lists the top 10 options for Pittsburgh at 1B. Thought a few options were interesting Ryan Doumit is an out of the box type thought. Could be interesting. Nick Swisher would be a safe choice. Pretty consistently a mid-800 hitter. Anyone know anything about Adam Lind? Would a change of scenery help the guy?
  18. Found a Yahoo Sports articlelisting the top 10 1B the Pirates should consider. Had this blurb about Morrison: 4. Logan Morrison(notes), Florida Marlins [/b] Logan Morrison is high on the good idea list but may be low on the could happen list. Morrison was in the doghouse in Florida and they reportedly wanted to trade him. Now the Marlins have a new skipper and Morrison seems like a Ozzie Guillen guy. Even if the Marlins decided to trade him there are some that think Morrison could be part of a James Shield trade with Tampa Bay. Do the Pirates have somebody better than Shields to offer?
  19. Or retired like Favre retires? Quick! Someone take away his camera phone!
  20. I can't imagine Thome would be able to play everyday at 1B, would he? If the Phillies also sign Cuddyer this will be very mind boggling. Its early in the off-season. Lots of things can happen. Maybe they will trade Pence. Maybe they have other plans. Its always nice when you can load up first, then re-shuffle. The Brewers tend to make trades, then try to fill holes. Sometimes that works, sometimes it ends up with Brady Clark in CF.
  21. Why would having fewer balls go to Braun be better? Didn't the discussion in the Gold Glove thread seem to point to Braun actually being one of the better LF'ers as far as fielding goes? The assumption (at least on my part) is that Braun does a good job with the balls he can get to, but limited range means he gets to less balls. Basically the YB principle...
  22. I'm disappointed and surprised, but at the same time, seeing all the work you put into this site, I don't blame you! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Salute to you sir and all the good work you have done.
  23. "Yo vamonos" - but that translates to "I let's go" Actually, he is calling out to Yovanni: "Yo, let's go!" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  24. I've heard that Ortiz is really bad at 1B. Sounds like Dunn fits that category also.
  25. Jose Reyes: Miami, six years, $108 million. Everyone knows that the Heat lost to the Mavericks because they didn't have a good SS... It's not just a difference of $2M or $3M, though. Guys like Barmes or Pena have been mentioned because they could be had on one-year deals, unlike Reyes. You're talking a difference of appx. $75M if you're comparing signing Reyes with signing Barmes & Pena. While that is true, what happens when the 1 or 2 year deal is finished? There really isn't anyone in the minors at SS that is going to help us anytime soon. So you sign another person at a similar rate. So it might end up being a couple million per year instead.
