  1. I know this sounds dumb but I think he'd be more valuable to Milwaukee signing with another team and allowing the Brewers to get another draft pick at the end of round one. That isn't dump at all! I would wager that most of us would prefer that. We need high draft picks now to refill the farm system. Even if he came back cheap, I'm not so sure I'd be on board. He looked ok at the end of the season, but I wouldn't want to bet too much on him continuing that way. Question: I know this rarely happens in BB, but if SD signed him to a one-day "retirement contract", would that give the Brewers a draft pick?
  2. So this signing is basically just the Phillies feeling more comfortable about game 4s in the playoffs, right? It's not like we can say "now this makes them a playoff contender". They were already penciled in as NL East champs just like any other year. I understand it was Lee's choice, but Philly still made an offer. I guess the difference between a Roy Oswalt start and a Joe Blanton start once a series is worth the gajillions they now owe Lee. You forget that this also takes him away from the Phillies competition for the WS. Even if he doesn't pitch, he isn't pitching against them either.
  3. Seems like every year, DM fills up the 40-man roster, then drops someone at the back-end when everyone else has full 40-man rosters also (thus not losing the player to a waiver pickup). I'm still hoping for Capuano as well.
  4. Lets just say Narveson goes something like 13-11 with a 4.35 ERA this year I'll just wait for this to happen first. But I'm not holding my breath...
  5. To me, an option just saying we're "Favorites to make the post-season" implies we're either favorites to win the division or wild card. That's why that's not an option. Then my vote is none of the above. As I mentioned above, "Favorite to win the WC" means we have little chance at the Division title. "Favorites to win at least the WC" would get my vote. But as they are written, none of them apply. Is this why we stopped doing polls? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  6. When I saw this, my thought was: There aren't enough pages of comment for it to be our Braun traded... If Greinke and Marcum can get about 2-3 pages per hour, Braun's trade would get about 10 pages per hour.
  7. I don't think the Brewers can afford that and I'm not sure we have another player we could send with a contract that could evenly partly even that out. Jeff Suppan! Oh, wait... weird feeling... an offseason without discussing Suppan's contract dragging us down... its ... wonderful!
  8. Ah, then I would re-word the Wild-Card option. We should be a favorite to make the post-season, but saying favorite to win the Wild Card sounds like someone is head and shoulders better than us (thus we won't win the Central). I would say favorites to make the post-season, contenders to win the Central. Can I re-vote? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. I voted favorites for NL Central, but I think "favorite" might be too strong. Legit contender or something like that might be better, as I don't seem them head-and-shoulders above the others in the Central.
  10. Cameron's age worries me a bit to go for him. If he were a FA and could be signed on the cheap, maybe. But to trade much for him, I'm not too keen on that. But the Scutaro comment made me really interested... Any comments on his defense?
  11. i like that idea, except hart has a hard time judging balls in right. him in center would not be good. I'm not advocating moving Hart to CF, but just wanted to point out that when Yount moved to the OF, he started in LF. But found it easier to judge balls from the CF perspective.
  12. Do you honestly trust a guy coming off a year where he posted a 6.86 ERA at AAA? Ken Macha ruined him. So I'm sure he will be find now...
  13. Hopefully this means he'll be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Brewer.Only if he drives in the winning hit of the final game of the World Series this year. So I'd say its pretty probable! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  14. We'll post Alcides' numbers at winter season's end in a week or so, but the daily updates will stop for now. I'm sure he will go on a hot streak now... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  15. Well, if you are going for it all this year and expect to win a WS, you must have Counsell!
  16. I was pretty surprise last night when I heard of this. My first reaction was surprise that they added Odorizzi to the package, but the more I think of it, the more I like it. Several people mentioned how we must be "going for it now", which is completely correct. But I think the Brewers have to do it that way. If they had a system that was pumping out stud prospects every year or three, it would be different. We all know how Weeks, Fielder and Braun (and Hart just ahead of them) all came up, but there was no pitching. Similarly, we were looking at an issue with some decent pitchers coming in the next 2-3 years, but we would have lost Fielder by then and no stud hitting prospects. So why not trade some of the future to lump our prospects into one decent chance this year? As opposed to just poking our noses above .500 every year? Anyone think this might make Fielder more interested in staying?
  17. Seems that there is always a weight question, but not always in this direction...
  18. As others have said, I don't think anyone is down on his potential. But for next year he is a 4/5 SP, at least until he proves himself more. Sheets took 4 years at the MLB level before he pitched like a #1 SP.
  19. I do know that everyone over at the Sickels site think we have a bottom 3-5 system, but imo, they are pretty uniformed about the Brewers prospects. I missed that the first time. But I guess if they all are in agreement that we have a bottom 3-5 system, they are uniform at being uninformed! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  20. Yeah, because Maddux pitched so much worse than Pedro when they both lost some velocity. Ridiculous. A guy who can keep the movment on his pitches and can hit is spots is way better off than a FB reliant pitcher who loses his FB. You might notice that I use "probably" and "likely" quite a bit when posting these types of things. That's because no number of good and bad examples of other pitchers will ever describe what will happen as Marcum ages. You might also notice that I already used Maddux as an example of the best case example for soft tossers. I could find lots of examples of soft tossers that lost a few MPH and lost it completely (Suppan). There are also examples of hard tossers that became "smart" as they aged (Hoffman). But none of that helps predict Marcum. My only summary point was that in general, soft tossers have less room for error. Not sure how that is "ridiculous".... FWIW, I'm glad the Brewers acquired Marcum.
  21. I think the rule is can't be traded until a year after they sign. January sounds like an odd time for a player to sign. The deadline is in August. I know there were a couple reasons it could be extended but I think they got rid of that recently. Yeah, I didn't really have a specific rule in mind, just theorizing... And That's theory sounds pretty good.
  22. A control pitcher that throws 90 vs. a "thrower" that throws 95. If both age and lose 2 MPH off the fastball, which one has more leeway to still pitch well? I would tend to think the harder thrower is more likely to get better results. For every Maddux, there is Randy Johnson and Nolan Ryan; both can be done, but its just less room for error with the softer throwing pitchers. But I would also say that Marcum at 29 is several years away from worrying about losing much via age. We should easily get 3-4 years before worrying about that.
  23. You don't trade someone pre-Rule V draft if the only player you want is draft eligible. They have to be OK with player A or player B in return. Otherwise, you just wait until post draft. I would guess there is some other rule holding this up (player X can't be traded until Y days after being drafted or Y days after being signed...).
  24. I'm not sure Gennett has a higher ceiling than Morris. Gennett is one small dude. My logic goes like this: - Gennett has put up some nice numbers for a 2B. If he can continue that, he would be an above average (or higher) 2B in MLB. But his size makes him more risky that he can make it at all. - Morris projects to be more of an average 1B. Low Ave, but some power. No real glaring weakness translating to a better chance of making the bigs. Thus, higher ceiling (i.e. the best projection if all goes well), but more likely to not make it at all.
  25. I would think Scooter has a higher ceiling than Morris (considering one is at 2B and one is at 1B), but I think Scooter also has a higher probability of not making it also. I don't think we have seen the best of Morris yet. Given that he went to the AFL out of A-ball (as a fill-in, but still...), I have a feeling the Brewers are pretty high on him.
