  1. Glad to see we still hold on to Taylor Green. I figured there was a small chance someone might take a flier on him for a utility guy. But I would imagine his injury history nullified that chance.

  3. We should probably split the cap discussion off on its own thread, but my $0.02 on the $100M cap per team example: You are correct that there would be less HUGE salaried players. Less of the top of the top end. But overall, caps have shown to raise the price of the bottom end. So there is less disparity from player to player. Then, after some time, the cap totals start to go up. As more teams are actually able to compete for the WS, it raises general interest. Fewer stadiums with 1000 fans in attendance. Fewer meaningless games. Better rivalries make more rabid fans, who spend more money on games and team stuff. The NFL is a great example of this. NBA is less so, but there is no way teams like OKC, Charlotte, Milwaukee, Orlando, Cleveland, compete with BOS and LAL without the cap... No link to back that up, just my $0.02.
  4. To be completely honest I don't really follow the NBA that closely, but it also seems to be a sport that has the same teams win every year and they find loopholes to getting around the salary cap (if I'm not mistaken). I was referring to Miami when I made that comment. Are there many other NBA teams that could have done that? The NBA salary cap has a soft and a hard limit. The soft limit means that if its exceeded, the team has to pay a luxury tax. The hard limit can't be exceeded. The main difference between MLB and NBA is that the soft limit is reachable by every team. The Miami Heat signed three huge FA because: 1) The three players got together and decided they wanted to play together. 2) The Heat practically gutted the rest of their salary. Most everyone other than those three are playing for the minimum (plus an excellent shot at the NBA title) 3) Each individual took less than the max to sign with the Heat. FWIW, there were a couple teams that could have done exactly what the Heat did last year. Its just that the three FAs decided to pick Miami. Probably because of Pat Riley. But there were several teams trying to do exactly that.
  5. Yeah, you never see an NBA team that can load up with that much talent. I think affordability was the intention, not just collecting talent. Interesting to see Boston loading up offensively and Yanks loading up on pitching....
  6. The mystery team is probably just an imaginary team to get the Yankees to pony up a few more million or add some years. If this is true, I sincerely hope the mystery team is us. But only if we don't win... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. Venezuela -- SS Alcides Escobar with an 0-for-5 "effort" and 4th fielding error in 16 games; .440 OPS in 64 AB's (box). Maybe its time for a little vacation for Escobar and focus on starting out rested and strong for ST....
  8. Nieves...that no-hitter dude is still around? Ahhhhh.... good memories of a purer, more innocent times... 1987 was my favorite BB year of all time (too young for 1982).
  9. I dont mean to sound like a jerk but who else would have paid a 41 year old closer $30m over 2 years? Maybe it isn't about the money but that is still a lot of money for a closer let alone one that age. You are forgetting to adjust the dollar amounts for the NYY inflation. This would be similar to: - Boston or Chicago spending $25M over 2 years - Brewers spending $10M over 2 years - Pirates spending $1.25 over 2 years.
  10. It only takes one lunatic. And unfortunately, the MLB has many lunatics out there...
  11. Now its official... No one in DC is reducing spending.
  12. Sorry, I may have lost some context there. I left off at page 13 or 14 yesterday, and jumped into page 20 or 21 today... Just tired of the "we must have power pitchers" or "we must have left/right SP balance" that keeps popping up. Lets start with pitchers that get outs. Its not like we are shopping at Wal-Mart with 47 variations of shampoo to choose from. Good SPs are a very limited supply.
  13. Well, I guess the AAA 2B spot just opened up for Farris... But regardless, it would be interesting to see him work at SS. Even if he couldn't handle SS everyday, just to spell the SS, he could profile as an excellent utility player.
  14. ...guys with a plus fastball don't have to do research. Manny Parra says hello. Can we please get over the "plus fastball" trip? Yes, all of us long for the next Nolan Ryan. But we need pitchers period. People rarely give up pitchers with low ERA and plus fastballs, because they are so extremely rare. And when they do, they are extremely expensive. Yes, all things being equal, a bigger fastball is preferred (more room for error). But there are lots of pitchers with a big fastball that can't pitch. I was not a big fan of Lawrie. I'm sure he will become a nice MLB player, but I really doubt we gave up anything special. Question: Do you think Lawrie skipping the Arizona Fall League helped precipitate this trade?
  15. Except that he was. Wasn't as long as I remember. I thought it was like a month (maybe it just seemed like it), but it was more like a week or two. Hamstring injury back in April/May. My memory also tells me that he started slow post injury (lot of concern based on his injury the prior year), but for the life of me, I can't find any splits for the time in Huntsville.
  16. How come Carlos Gomez wasn't sent down? He sucked, had options and a viable replacement. I knew someone would bring that up. Because its so easy to forget that Cain was injured at the beginning of the year. He only played July and a bit of August in the minors (22 games total). Then Cain was called up and Gomez WAS sent down (just not long enough).
  17. This quote: "And can "we stop blaming Macha for "ruining" players? If he was over-using someone, ok, I'll buy the argument. But that's not the case with Villy. He played his own way to AAA." I don't think that I'm alone in my feeling that Macha had it in for Villanueva almost from day one. Like Hardy, he was dumped at low value after being exiled to Nashville. There has also been a double standard on this team, some guys get sent to AAA for stinking up the field, some don't. I'll buy your last statement about some being sent to AAA and some didn't. But I'd also add that some had MiLB options, some didn't. Some had viable replacements, some didn't. Villy had both and option and a viable replacement. But I would still love to see evidence that Macha "ruined" Villy. He got consistent work from opening day until the day they sent him down. He was not over, nor under-used. His results started terrific for 1/2 month, then shot to terrible for two months, and in July, rebounded to "bad". Please enlighten me how Macha caused this. I could also make similar arguments/questions about how Macha ruined Hardy and Gamel, but lets keep this about Villy.
  18. I don't think Macha ruined anybody, but he did blackball guys. That may be true. But there are plenty of groaning of how Gamel was "ruined" and someone mentioned it for Villy also. I'll stick to Villy, rather all the others you mentioned, but he very much earned his demotion last summer. Macha pitched him regularly (pre-demotion) and after that first month, he flopped.
  19. Villy had three decent years for us. But the last two have been less than stellar. He started quickly for us last year, but then stunk for 3 months before being sent to AAA. And can we stop blaming Macha for "ruining" players? If he was over-using someone, ok, I'll buy the argument. But that's not the case with Villy. He played his own way to AAA. Macha actually gave him a long leash.
  20. "He is an excellent defender," Iorg said. "He has plus range and he turns the double play very well. I think he's a heck of a player. He's a guy you want playing behind you on defense." If the Brewers really think Lawrie's long term prospects are at 2B, I've got to think they would at least try Farris at SS at AAA this year. Comments like that about his defense at 2B make you think that he should be at least adequate at SS.
  21. I had NEVER seen footage of Uecker in action. Nice. Real Nice. Not many people ever did. Even his coaches... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  22. So A-Rod could move back to SS? And if so, would he be the odds on favorite for the golden glove next year?
  23. ...there were zero reasons to use Hoffman at the end of the season.. he did not remotely figure into the future and we had plenty of players that needed to be looked at. There have been complaints about how the Brewers treat vets that don't figure into the Brewer's future. To the point that it impacts bringing in FAs (so they say). So treating a high profile vet like Hoffman with respect is a good reason. And I don't think the few appearances he made negatively effected anyone of consequence. I was glad they were able to lighten Axford's load at the end of the season in meaningless games. Braddock also seemed to wear down. His appearances might have affected Villanueava, but if that is what it took to gain us a supplemental 1st rounder, then I'm more than happy that they did it.
  24. Here is our chance! Lets swoop in and pay Jeter his asking price so we can steal him away from NYY and pay them back for stealing CC away. Then we will have that gold glove defense we have always been longing for! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  25. Joe Morgan didn't know what a small market team was...
