  1. Yeah, I noticed the smile, too. Some people have odd quirks like that. And if you or I did that, he would slug us. But I'm guessing Martinez has "earned the right" to tweak him like that and its become a running gag.
  2. Are Prince and Braun too cocky and arrogant? Probably. But I really missed the flare the team exhibited in prior seasons with untucking their shirts and a bowling pin celebration. I never understood how team celebrations (untucking) is considered arrogant (ok, the bowling pin was a bit). Even with the bowling pin, they hit a home run, why shouldn't they be able to celebrate it? Why don't pitchers throw at Bernie Brewer for sliding down the slide? Or at Ueck for telling the ball to "Get Out of Here!" ? People call the NFL the no-fun-league, but they allow a player to celebrate (on their own) for a touchdown. Winners jump on each other and celebrate after a win, yet still shake hands at the middle of the field afterwords (at least some). I'm actually amazed at the camaraderie in the NFL among players. To me, saying a winning team can't celebrate is the sign of a poor loser (yes, I'm talking about you St.Louis). There are obviously lines not to cross (mooning - fake or real) to remain respectful, but untucking shirts? please! I'm not sure that Fielder nor Braun is too cocky or arrogant (at least to the public eye). But neither one seems to really exhibit true leadership qualities either. Maybe that will develop as they get older. Ironically, I actually thought that Cameron exhibited leadership by implementing the untuck celebration. It helped unify the team (even in a small way) and I think we missed that this year.
  3. Komatsu solid in CF Nice to hear about Little Pine. Suddenly we are flush with CFs that carry a decent stick (Cain, Schafer, Komatsu, Ke. Davis)
  4. It really isn't possible for a team to have no MVP. Even the worst team ever has an MVP. Some guy has got to be more valuable than the others on a subjective basis. Just thought that "there was no MVP this year" was a funny comment. Take a look at all the discussion in this thread... There is no clear obvious choice. Weeks seems to have the most votes, but really, there are 4-5 guys that would be neck and neck as MVP. And a few more in a realistic discussion for MVP. So if I see it as five players were of equal value at the top of the list this year, how do I pick one? Hence, no MVP, but MVPs if you want to be technical... At that point, its almost like saying you are unique... just like everyone else.
  5. Interesting to see Rogers in the dugout chewing his fingernails... reminds me of Sheets. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. Its impressive that Rogers has struck out 6 in 5 innings and he doesn't seem to be throwing that hard (92-93 MPH).
  7. Come on Rogers. Lets get these next three outs for the career no hitter. Sure, way to jinx him... don't you know the unspoken rules? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. Ueck as they finish up the National Anthem: "And our final score tonight, Brewers 6, Reds 5. Wow. It didn't take Francis Scott Key that long to write it." I love the national anthem, but I suppose hearing it 162 times a year for however many years... the bad ones probably grind on you a bit. Classic Ueck, though!
  9. I agree with most of the projected rosters. However, I think we can get ourselves a true #1 for Fielder. I like Gallardo a ton, but I see him as an excellent #1B or #2 starter. He just doesn't strike a whole lot of fear into me, as a great #1 should. I guess it depends on how you define a "#1 SP". If you mean one of the top 30 starting pitchers in baseball, yes Gallardo is a #1. But I think you mean an "ace", which (subjectively) would be more like the top 5-10, then no, I don't consider Yo to be there yet. But it took Sheets 4 years in the MLB before he got to the "ace" status. Fielder probably won't get us a current #1 SP (unless its a similar circumstance of one year left before FA or injury issues, or...), but he could easily net us someone that could become a #1. So do you want pitching for now or pitching for later?
  10. Isn't a little pine a bonsai? Bonsai means "tray tree". Its not the name of a species. And they are typically junipers (evergreens, but like cedar), but can be pine. I'm all in favor of "little pine" for his nickname. Hope he likes it! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif But also does that mean when someone is benched for a couple days, we say that he just "got komatsu-ed"?
  11. His season was just ridiculous. I can buy Weeks as Brewer MVP, but there have been a number of comments like this about Weeks' season that I just don't get. He had a nice season, but he wasn't the best 2B in the league nor was he the best hitter on the team. It was probably his best year, but still not drastically above his norms. Nothing I would term ridiculous (see Jose Bautista). Personally, there was no MVP this year. Hart, Braun, Fielder, Weeks, McGehee, Yo and Ax were all pretty even. Maybe a touch lower for Ax due to number of innings, but his affect on the BP was undeniable. If I HAD to pick on, I'd pick Yo, as it would have had the most effect on the team by losing him (i.e. having 5 hitters carry most of the offense load would have softened the blow of losing one of them).
  12. Granted, none of that covers Koskie's case. He fell down fielding a pop-fly and could barely walk for the next 6 months without getting dizzy and throwing up. That would be obvious in any sport.
  13. The Pirates have only had one as well. Any guesses as to who that was? (without looking of course/) It had to be back when the BBs were still in Pittsburg. This one is probably more than 17 years, but I'm going to guess Oil Can Boyd. I seem to remember him having some half-wise decent years at the end of his career, but I don't remember if that was with Pitt or not. edit - Ok, I looked and was way off on both counts. Can't tell you why I had Boyd with the Pirates... for some reason, I have a picture of him in my head with the old flat-sided P hats on... But Pitt did have quite a few pitchers hit 15+ wins in a season with B-Bonds and B-Bonilla on the team. Its just more than 17 years ago...
  14. and with 1 walk every 6 ABs, I think 3TO has a new poster child! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  15. Yes, I would agree that our infield defense won't do Webb any favors. But at the same time, it doesn't help any of our pitchers. The impact might be more for Webb, but in general, I'd take a GB pitcher over a flyball pitcher (all other things being equal). I'm not saying lets get Webb. There may be other mitigating factors. I'm just saying, don't avoid GB pitchers just because of our infield defense... Get good pitchers (and in general heavy GB pitchers are good pitchers), then work to improve the defense.
  16. endaround, you shamed me into looking for myself. I could have looked that up... From the company's website: Our company was named after the city Komatsu, located in the Ishikawa Prefecture of the Hokuriku region in Japan. The actual name "Komatsu" translates into English as "little pine tree" and, according to legend, dates back to the middle of the Heian period (794-1192). At that time, the monk-emperor Kazan planted a pine sapling during a tour of the Hokuriku region, and the area where it grew came to be called "sono no komatsubara" ("small-pine field with gardens"). This name is said to have been shortened to "Komatsu". So, if our "little pine tree" makes it to the bigs, do we get a new corporate sponser? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. I'm sorry, but thats not going to do a GB pitcher any favors and I don't think you need defensive statistics to realize that. No, but that isn't a reason to not go after him either.
  18. I would think with his age and injury history, Cappy is going to try to get the longest contract he can this year. I'd be ok with him at the back-end of our rotation. He is better than Parra or Narveson.
  19. Maybe the title should be changed to say, "Can Wolf continue his success from the end of this season?" He has looked like a different pitcher lately. Funny thing is that he ERA, BAA and WHIP are all very close to career norms for him. His K/9 is down and his BB/9 is up a bit from career averages, but it looks like those numbers are skewed a bit from this early career K rates. But then again, his career has some really good and really bad seasons...
  20. I know I've seen him hit 97 as well, but for a kid who was suppose to be hitting 100 in high school, I've been disappointed. I'm no scout, but I've heard enough pitchers that "hit 100 in high school" to know: 1) That probably meant once or twice when he was amped up for a scout 2) He generally won't pitch a game at that speed. 3) Fastball speeds generally fluctuate during the year and from start to start. 4) He probably has no control at 100 MPH. I'd rather see him at 95 MPH with control than 100MPH and being "just a bit outside"
  21. Unless its an emergency, I'm not expecting Rogers to start at the MLB level... But this looks like a beautiful line-up at the AAA level: Rogers Jeffress Rivas Butler Fiers Big difference from two years ago...
  22. Great pic, Mass. We drove by a Komatsu bulldozer over the weekend and I pointed it out to my wife, explaining it was the last name of a Brewer minor leaguer. So anyone know if he is related or if there are millions of Komatus?
  23. I'm not so sure our high school and college ranks really baby their pitchers either. There are plenty of stories about guys throwing 150+ pitches in a game or larger amounts of innings, etc... Its not until the minor leagues that they are monitored and regulated on those type of metrics.
  24. There is the solution to the salary cap issue! Just move so many teams into the NY/Boston/LA/Chicago markets that they all break down to small and midsize markets! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  25. The Rays make money. They just don't make huge amounts. The owner is lying through his teeth. Proof?
