  1. Luis Cruz and his Tomato Growers Sounds like a team on the local city softball league... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  2. Ahhh, I missed that. I always thought if the player was offered back, he went back to the same pre-RuleV draft status. I guess that is a big reason why some teams don't take the player back.

  4. I was hoping he would leave the Brewers with a parting gift... I think just his presence in the pen was a good influence on the other BP guys. Showing them how a pro goes about his business (preparation, fitness, etc..). I still remember the first game we were at when he came in. It suddenly got eerily quiet and BONG! My wife jerked her head around (doing something with the kids) and said "What's that?" I think that was the first time she ever really paid attention to the 9th inning of a baseball game...
  5. I like Bush, but with a projected rotation of Greinke, Gallardo, Marcum, Wolf and Narveson and having Rogers, Rivas, Fiers, Butler, and Dillard waiting at AAA... we are in serious trouble if we are missing him.
  6. So now we just need an intimidating ax sound when Axford comes into the game. Or as the first batter steps into the box the crowd makes an ax chop motion with sound effects. Maybe that will intimidate the opponents. I guess that is more intimidating than everyone turning and shooting an imaginary bow... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. There is a psychological element of a dominant closer, however. Not only is it the "here he comes" intimidation to the opposing team (see "Wild Thing" or Hoffman and Hell's Bell's), but he tends to be a backbone of the bullpen also. Now, that and $5 will get you a Starbuck's coffee (black no sugar). And could he still do that while coming in during the 7th inning with bases loaded? Yes. But he still has plenty of value even if he only comes in the 9th or a couple outs into the 8th. Hopefully Ax can still come in during the 8th if needed. "Closer by committee" rarely intimidates anyone...
  8. Rosario's going to have to be on the 40-man roster regardless if the Brewers do take him back. If the Brewers take him back, they don't have to put him on the 40-man, do they?

  10. Well, the 2014 projected lineup looks pretty interesting... I really doubt we sign Fielder, Weeks, Greinke and Marcum all to extensions... Catcher Jonathan Lucroy First Base Prince Fielder Second Base Scooter Gennett Third Base Casey McGehee Shortstop Yadiel Rivera Left Field Ryan Braun Center Field Rickie Weeks Right Field Corey Hart No. 1 Starter Zack Greinke No. 2 Starter Yovani Gallardo No. 3 Starter Mark Rogers No. 4 Starter Shaun Marcum No. 5 Starter Cody Scarpetta Closer John AxfordBut if true, these trades would be certainly more than worth it...
  11. I always thought Jack Z got a little too much praise for the Brewers draft successes (and DM seemed to get all the blame for draft failures), but two years is a little ridiculous, unless you REALLY screw something up...
  12. Now we had to mortgage part to all of the future (3-7 years) to be competitive with that group. ...he made a good but expensive (desperate?) move to actually shore up that hole by trading for Greinke. I agree that our own drafting/developing of pitching has led us to this. Although, for some reason Jack Z is praised for drafting Fielder, Braun, and Weeks, but DM is scorned not drafting pitching... But given the situation we are in right now, with one year of Fielder, I heartily salute the all-in stance. What we gave up in trades were not going to make us competitive (with Fielder and maybe others leaving) in the next few years. But we will be competitive this year and maybe next as well. And I would say that trading for Marcum and Grienke is an indication that DM did learn from trying to patch with signing so-so type FA SPs. So we might have a lull in 2013 for a year or three. But I'll take 2 years of competing and 3 years rebuilding (if even that long) over five years of .500 ballclubs (or less).
  13. Mass thanks for the clarification on Scarpetta. I think I've heard that before... hopefully I remember it this time. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I'd rather split Komatsu and Schafer so both can get reps at CF. Komatsu might hit enough for RF spot (especially if you need OBP and have a lot of power like we have now), but I'd still prefer to get him reps at CF then move him over to RF if his blocked. Its more likely only one of Schafer/Komatsu will pan out in the bigs, than both. Come on Little Pine!
  14. I can buy Scarpetta, Heckathorn, Rivas and Peralta as B- grades, but Rogers should be at least a B then. He is at a higher level with higher potential. Roger's control issues are no worse than Scarpetta's. Offbeat question about Scarpetta: This is his last option year, isn't it? He has to be in the majors next year or DFAed, I think. I also think he gave Komatsu and Schafer too low of grades. Both project as starting CF, IMO, but he seems to think they top out at a 4th OF. Komatsu in AA is going to open some eyes this year. I think he was kind of "hidden" at Brevard this year, with the FSL's power sapping humidity. As for Schafer, the injury question was fair, but if healthy, he tops out at starting CF, not a 4th OF. Granted, both at AA might limit Komatsu's exposure in CF. Any thoughts of bumping Schafer to AAA based on the AFL league results?
  15. But wouldn't any combination of Fielder, Weeks, Marcum, and/or Greinke leaving restock the system via draft pick compensation? Up to 8 extra first round picks in the next two year (added with two or three this next draft) would change our system around really quickly.... We might still have a few down years while those make the majors, but I'd prefer having a year or two at contending and a couple down years to having several years of ho-hum .500 level teams...
  16. If your kids won't cheer for the Brewers, the Braves are a good second choice. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Being in California now, hopefully they will cheer for the Packers instead of the Los Angeles Vikings...
  17. Off topic somewhat, but what is the ceiling of that kid we drafted a couple of years ago (Josh Prince might be his name) and how far away is he? IMO his prospects look fairly dim,but I'm no expert and I'd sure love to be wrong. Well, he is no longer on the Power50 and that is the revised list after all the trades... He started out like gang-busters at Helena, but hasn't hit A or A+ ball well at all (.594 and .569 OPS)
  18. I'm scratching my head a bit over this one. Over the last few years, there was mass wailing at the idea of signing the next old, over-priced closer. Some worked out, some didn't, but all were expensive. Now we have Ax on the cheap for the next few years. I would wait at least until he is in arby before trading him (insert usual caveat for big WOW deal, which never really happens). I realize people are still stung by the whole Turnbow turn-around, but come on...
  19. Rumor has it that the Brewers bought out the entire stock of "Hello, My Name is" stickers from the local Office Max...
  20. I want to see the best hitters batting 2 & 4 (or vice versa), the leadoff hitter having some pop in addition to OBP ability, This part was easy to understand. and the #5 hitter being better than the #3 hitter. Not sure I get the point of this, however. Explanation?
  21. It maybe true that we have one of the lowest ranked systems in the MLB, but its been a long time since our top two MiLB systems had the depth of: AAA: Rogers, Rivas, Fiers, Dillard and Butler AA: Scarpetta, Peralta, Lamontagne, Merklinger, Sanchez Depending on how you rank them, there are 3-4 potential #2-3 SPs and 2-3 potential #4-5 SPs and the rest have bullpen potential. Yes, potential and $25 will get you a small Starbucks coffee, but that sure beats the MiLB FAs we normally have to sign to round out our pitching rotations at those levels. Generally, we have one high end prospect or a couple decent prospects, but IMO the top three of both those rotations are virtual locks to make the MLB at some point (save for injury).
  22. Of course, the article fails to talk about Egan, who might have a lower ceiling, but more likely to stick at the MLB level.... So in terms of probability: - 50% chance Egan makes the Brewers - 5% chance Rosario makes the Orioles.

  24. Is there a banner we can raise at MP to commemorate winning the offseason?
