  1. OK, now I'm intrigued...what are your incredibly expensive hobbies/interests?Obviously, with a name like FidoMcCokefiend (awesome, btw) it's dogs and cocaine... Or coke-snorting dogs and something else equally mysterious and crazy!
  2. I take issue with denying a young player like Gallardo a spot on the all star team simply due to rotation configuration. If a guy is deserving of making it, why not name him and replace him prior to the game? This could end up being his only shot (not likely, but traumatic injuries do happen). Is Cholly Manuel just doing Melvin/Macha a favor by not naming Gallardo so they don't have to play the bad guy in telling Gallardo that he can't pitch? Also, I don't see how Ryan Howard makes the team if Manuel isn't the manager. Four first basemen when one of them is playing in front of the hometown crowd is overkill. And when you're getting out-produced by Jaysen Werth as Howard is, you're typically the odd man out. Pablo Sandoval would have been a better choice. Heck, if you're dying for a guy with big Ks and big HRs, then go with Mark Reynolds.
  3. Tangent, can someone phonetically spell out 'Uihlein' for me? Every time I pass the park on Good Hope I wonder how it's pronounced.
  4. Interesting comparison. When Saarloos first got his shot in Oakland (after getting thrown into the fire a bit too early in Houston), he was an above-average starter. If we get one season like that out of a 4th round pick, I think we'd all be ecstatic. The good thing for Anundsen in this comp is he still a year younger than Saarloos was when he was drafted. There's still plenty of time for improvement, and it definitely seems like if the increase in velocity doesn't happen, it won't be for lack of effort on Evan's part. What's some other worst-case-scenario comps, assuming good health and all? Steve Woodard?
  5. Dysktra put up a .805 OPS in Helena (advanced Rookie ball) just out of high school. I'm not big on the guy, but to say 'hasn't done anything' is a bit over the top.
  6. I read that as well. I miss Gross too, but Butler has the potential to give the Brewers a lot more than Gross did in his time here(not entirely Gabe's fault since he was somewhat mis-used by Yost) and is showing it this year in the minors.
  7. Advantage: davego. That wasn't a Loggers game by chance, was it?
  8. Drafted high means "high potential". No one here is saying otherwise.
  9. If that is indeed the case, the Brewers almost have to add him to the 40-man this offseason to protect their investment. He would have to be added in 2010, so this would be adding him a year early.
  10. That's assuming the Counsell/McGehee honeymoon will last forever, which it assuredly won't. Counsell will fall of the cliff at any moment, like he has for the entirety of his career. He's not all of the sudden going to be an adequate full-time starter at age 39.
  11. Good God, 10 years ago we were just done hyping our #1 prospect of the mid-90s, Valerio De Los Santos (ugh). That's how bad it was pre-Jack Z. 10 years ago, there was Sheets, Nuegebauer, JM Gold (*sigh*), and a bunch of nobodies. Kyle Peterson and Chad Green had already flamed-out. Bill Hall eventually came out of nowhere to make something of himself at High Desert, but that wasn't until later. 10 years ago, a guy like Dykstra would be automatically heralded as system saviors (not that he doesn't have plenty of time to turn it around). The fact that he's just regarded as quality depth at this point and we're completely okay with that speaks volumes of how far this organization has come.
  12. Woke up this morning to a thundering crash in the kitchen area. Turns out the ceiling fan installed in the dining room (not sure why it was there in the first place, as all it does is promote cold food) got dislodged from it's base and fell directly on to the table. The fan looks to still be operational, only the light fixture is a little dinged up. I fear the worst for the cantaloupe the fan fell on though. I'm just baffled how it was able to un-thread itself from the base and loosen a tightening screw. Must have gone millimeter by millimeter over 20+ years.
  13. Five pitches for a strikeout isn't particularly impressive for a hitter. It's only two over the minimum number of pitches. That and 37.5% of his swings in those 2 ABs made absolutely no contact. I'm rooting for Cole Gillespie but without knowing the competition, that's not exactly an encouraging sign.
  14. He's at 38% per B-R. Another interesting thing about Lucroy is if you look at his current stats (as of yesterday), he has roughly an equal amount of ABs at WV, BC, and HV. Since advancing to Huntsville, he's had a 33% increase in walks while simultaneously flatlining his K/rate. His K/BB ratio is virtually 1/1. His hitting stats aren't all the way there yet (although his power finally came back in June), but the future still looks bright. It looks like he'll reach the majors for good before Salome.
  15. I assume you mean Chris Cody, and not Cody Adams who is also going tonight for Wisconsin. (Not to mention Scarpetta as well, damn all those pitching Codys...) Look forward to reading some more first-hand reports.
  16. I think the age cutoff is a bit unnecessary. Age compared to level is a factor in assessing prospectdom, generally moving players down the list as the get older. Excluding outright is a bit of over-redundancy. At the time when the system was barren of any types of prospects, it made total sense, but for where they're at now I would just let it play itself out.
  17. Because expecting an overworked, soon to be 39-year-old Craig Counsell to continue hitting at these rates is pretty short sighted. ZIPs pegs him at a .681 OPS for the remainder of the season. Seeing that he's put up a .589 OPS in the second half of the last 3 seasons (a -.100 decline from his first half OPS over the same time period), that .681 figure seems generous. Gamel is a more than viable option from here on out offensively. Defensively, how much better is McGehee at 3B than Gamel? Anectodally based on this past game, not much. If his bat needs to be in the line-up, it can be at 2B.
  18. Instead of "hiding" the posts (which I believe is what causes the jumps to be off), couldn't mods just delete all content in the post and leave it there, or would that not solve the issue? It obviously looks like a fix from Yuku isn't coming any time soon.
  19. Anyone here among the 2000+ that showed up today in Brown Deer? With the attendance at that size, I'm pretty thankful I ended up avoiding it. It's still pretty cool that the team does this though. Without knowing the make-up of the autograph seekers, would it be beneficial to limit the signatures to children to pare down the crowd size? How many people today left home disappointed?
  20. Favorite song? 'Ben', if only for Crispin Glover's version in the remake of Willard.
  21. Man, he must have taken his lack of success at AA pretty hard. The Brewers can't really trade him for fair value now, they'll just have to nurture him back to success (and I use the term "nurture" in its loosest sense seeing that it's all on him, really) and hope that he gets it both off and on the field. Flat out getting rid of him at this point (as suggested in the drivel at the J-S blog) wouldn't make any sense. There's just too much talent and too much invested in him. Best of luck to Jeremy in his ongoing recovery.
  22. Sounds like he could use a Zack Morris Cell Phone. They really should re-release those. I guess they're available for purchase from RetroBrick.
  23. Gotta love conflicting scouting reports. Apparently Prince is graceful, but not fluid. Something about that just doesn't compute.
  24. I read "Scouts debate" as less of an unequivocal assessment of his defense, and more of BP hedging their bets in their analysis so they can say "I told you so" in either case of him staying or moving off of SS. I think every site has a standard Brewers Prospect Template that says something along the lines of 'XYZ is awesome at the plate, but may have to get moved further down the defensive spectrum in the future' whether it's true or not. We've been typecast as an organization!
  25. Yeah, if Gord said that, it's on him, but I also take issue with the intentional vagueness of "emotional issues" in Haudricourt's article. The guy keeps on proving that he just doesn't get it. Increased coverage from the J-S without accurate details means nothing.
