  1. I saw Yo La Tengo at Turner Hall last February. What a treat.
  2. I couldn't disagree more. I think the Lips are at the best when their weirdness (not sure how else to describe it) has some pop sensibility. The Terror and Embryonic are good, but I think At War with the Mystics is superior. [sarcasm]Twisting obvious facts to meet your musical tastes is the most egregious example of musical homerism there is! I will not stand for it! I suppose you're entitled to your opinion and everything, but now I must distrust everything you say![/sarcasm] I gave AWWTM another spin fairly recently and while it wasn't as bad as I remembered, it's just travels down the path of the element of FLip-ness that I like least. To each their own though, obviously.
  3. As much as a loathe Pick 'n Save and Walmart, Woodman's is a pretty big offender of this as well in my experience.
  4. 'Amok' by Atoms for Peace isn't as good as Thom Yorke's 'The Eraser' nor Radiohead's 'King of Limbs', but it's a palatable amalgam of approximately the middle-est of both. 'The Terror' is the Flamings Lips best since 'Yoshimi', which doesn't say a whole lot but I did like 'Embryonic' quite a bit. Really their only mis-step in the past 20 years was 'At War with the Mystics'. 'Ghost on Ghost' by Iron & Wine was a bit disappointing to me. The loungy, jazzy tripe which alternately takes up half the album are the biggest offenders of musical blandness Sam Beam could possibly spit out, belying the lyrical complexity he consistently brings. 'Trouble Will Find Me' by The National is another one of there's that I will love infinitely more after another 100 listens. Daft Punk's 'Random Access Memories' has been everything and nothing I expected. I've played it so much in the past few weeks I'm almost sick of it. Every time it comes on again though, that feeling goes away instantly. That's all I've had a chance to get into this year, which is at a greater rate than years past. How does the new QOTSA rate on a scale of to 'Era Vulgaris' to 'Songs for the Deaf'? That's 5-10 in layman's terms.

  6. I watched the final 2 episodes after sitting out most of seasons 7-9. Good stuff. Reminiscent of the quality of the first episode I caught live: "Christmas Party". Oh, those were the days. 2005, you rocked!
  7. The Green Bay Packers are now on the clock. Throw an opinion out there...
  8. The late Pat Summerall would say (to my ears, at least) 'Jag-offs'.
  9. Roger Ebert was an awesome human being, whose knowledge and effort we all should aspire to live up to. I read his blog post the day before, felt a twinge of sadness but not anything of what really was to come. His impact transcends film, and will never be forgotten.
  10. I recently saw an advertisement on a bus stop bench that stated the offices of said business were "directly accross the street".
  11. As for video, we have a FlipHD cam, but don't use it a whole lot. Video is more of a spur of the moment thing for us, and for that cellphones work flawlessly. Quality is extremely comparable, too.
  12. I love using our DSLR to take photos of the kids. Just an outstanding investment as far as I'm concerned. My wife doesn't like the hassle of it (can get kind of complicated) and prefers to use a simple point-and-shoot. Our entry-level DSLR is just such a drastic improvement in quality over the other camera or our cellphones. After the picture is taken, all you have left is the results, and I can't think of a single non-DSLR photo we've taken that I didn't wish we could do over "correctly".
  13. Okay, okay, okay, I fully realize that when you enter a line behind a lady purchasing $124.57 worth of cat-related merchandise, you get what's coming to you. But seriously, taking 20 separate coupons, then signing her up for a store card without so much as a glance from the cashier warning me it was going to take, oh I don't know, 9 minutes from start to finish. Not ideal. Indeed, I was there only to purchase four 12-packs of Pepsi (plus one 2L of Cherry Coke Zero) that were on sale, so what type of store-brought karmic retribution did this end result not satisfy? And surely it was only due to my own laziness that I did not immediately withdraw from the line the second I saw those damn coupons, even after the initial sight of the kitty litter raised immediate suspicion not 60 seconds prior. (I mean, 643+ ounces of water, aspartame, and phenylalanine can be a bit heavy, right?) So well played, Target. Your move to unleash a coupon-wielding, card-applying, CatLady on me almost worked. Almost. But my steely resolve to get explicitly what I came there for paid off in the end.
  14. Paled in comparison to Yo La Tengo playing to an audience of 600 in Milwaukee the night prior. Musical tastes aside, from what I caught of her performance (which was about 10 minutes or so, as I conveniently used the time to put the kids to bed), it was pretty damn good. Not Prince in the rain from 2007 good, but good nonetheless. I don't care for her music whatsoever, but her enthusiasm won me over. Still waiting for the league to go retro and book a marching band. Only then will I be completely satisfied.
  15. A co-worker's uncle purchased a Surface and was said to have loved it. Pretty sad for Microsoft that that's as tangentially close as anyone in my circles has encountered their product. I am really intrigued by it, but never considered it when tablet shopping recently due to the price tag ($499/$599 w/ keyboard cover). Looking forward to hearing some first hand info from someone, anyone.
  16. I strongly considered getting a Nexus 7 for road trips for the kids, but went with the Samsung Galaxy 2 Tab 7.0 due to the microSD slot. Loaded up some movies on their and made the last half of the 4 hour drive tolerable. Not the biggest fan of Samsung's TouchWiz interface and it's associated bloatware, but for the price and what I needed it best fit my needs. A bit cheaper than the N7, but it evens out when you factor in the microSD card to even out or expand the memory. I picked up an Asus TF300T for myself. I played around with the N7 and determined the 7 inch screen to be too small for viewing use, but the 10.1 seems almost too big for physical use. (Must be great swyping on 7 inches of screen horizontally.) Not sure why the sweet spot of 8.9 (Samsung released an original galaxy tab in that format) didn't catch on. The machine itself is nice, a step down from the Prime Bruce mentioned but pretty damn swift itself. I never considered getting an iPad. All the mobile devices in my household are Android and my PCs are Windows, didn't see a need to introduce yet another environment into the mix. Their ridiculously pompous advertising doesn't help matters either.
  17. Never fear, old man Jim. I'm here as well. The end of 2012 shall be remembered here as the year that ended with my son gratuitously vomiting in three rooms of the house. Bring it on, 2013.
  18. http://www.speedtest.net/result/2396550799.png TW's decision to start charging a rental fee for use of their previously free modem gave me motivation to whip out the dusty old Motorola SB5100. Still works like a charm on my 15Meg service, evidently.
  19. Wow, I've only purchased 4 albums that came out this year. 1. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! Hard to believe it was a 10 year gap between releases. No demerits taken for excessive punctuation. 2. Air - Le Voyage Dans La Lune Not too crazy about it, but listened to it a bit more than the two that follow. The project itself is probably more memorable than the music. 3. Mars Volta - Noctourniquet Every couple of years they churn out something more than the sum of the parts, but this, like Bedlam in Goliath sounds more like just that. Might be their last for a while though. Now that Ryan Adams has relatively settled down, the one group I follow for which self-editing could help the most. 4 Sigur Rós - Valtari I'll admit to not having heard this yet, or at least not remembering doing so. Picked this up used a few weeks ago, give me a break... I apologize, I have more money than I ever have each and every year, and each and every year I buy less and less. So it goes with procreation. I suppose I'm only further cementing my status into new musical irrelevancy by using a fraction of said money towards purchasing tickets to a Yo La Tengo show. I'm surprised people still buy cds. I am still one of those, but immediately digitize upon purchase. I do like the artwork and the familiarity of the medium, although both are appreciated approximately once per ownership.
  20. I don't mean to un-random these random thoughts, but it seems like every other record they've released out of their last 4 has missed the mark. (At least to me, anyways.) Loved Amputechture and Octahedron, hated most of Bedlam and merely tolerate Noctourniquet.
  21. Hope it's not deemed offensive that my immediate reaction is "HADOUKEN!"
  22. Larger than life, literally and figuratively. One of Milwaukee's best, for sure.
  23. And here I thought Braun single-handedly willed the Angels to sign Stetter.
  24. I wore the crap out of a "Motre Bame" hat in the mid-90s. The team may have sucked and it was a pretty stupid logo, but for that reason alone I have a relative affinity for that logo. [bLASPHEMY ALERT]: I never was a fan of the ball-in-glove growing up.
  25. Bulk up, add some distance to your long fly balls, change your username, buy size 40, and done.
