  1. I actually like Saunders and think he's sort of underrated. I thought for sure him going back to BAL was an unspoken done deal, but it's not looking that way.
  2. Agreed. I'm wondering what the deal looks like.
  3. I just saw the Phils signed Lannan too.
  4. Reading this morning that the Phils are closing in on a deal with Mike Adams.
  5. Agreed with the above. It's very telling that DM has been so candid about his zero interest in Marcum. And although Marcum is a vet presence, his health is too unreliable for the position the Brewers are in. At this stage, Marcum is every bit as unknown as the youngsters that would get a shot in the rotation. Any deal for Marcum would be penny wise, but pound foolish.
  6. I think it's a pretty good deal for the Cubs too, actually. I agree with Turbo and Eye Black - this is the price for a guy like this. This is the market.
  7. EDIT: Totally misread. Was posting from my phone.
  8. And I just posted this in the Dempster thread in the Trade Proposal forum, but it warrants consideration here too... Melvin's comments were that once Dempster signed in BOS, the Brewers were done exploring SP. So...it was Dempster or bust the whole time? That's an awful FA plan.
  9. Melvin's comments were a little perplexing...he said once Dempster signed in Boston, the Brewers wouldn't explore any other SP options. So, it was either Dempster or bust the whole time? I have a hard time believing that. But if indeed true, that offseason plan flat out stinks.
  10. I totally agree with this. I'm skeptical that the plan to go with such an inexperienced staff - starters and pen - is going to turn out very well. EDIT: And if that is indeed the plan, then I also agree with the sentiment that they should start blowing out pieces in exchange for prospects.
  11. I'm really enjoying the latest Mars Volta record, Noctourniquet.
  12. Of course what DM says publicly and what he's really working on can look worlds different...he sounded pretty convincing in the audio from last night. It sounds to me like the Brewers aren't going to reach for anyone, and they aren't budging on giving any SP a max of 2 years. Again, I understand part of that is publicspeak directed specifically at agents, but I also believe DM has a certain financial plan and he isn't deviating from it.
  13. These guys that are mentioned signed record deals at the time. And of those mentioned Sabathia is the only one I miss. (that includes Greinke)
  14. I posted this article when the season ended. Someone took the time to lift the hood and examine each of those trades. Interesting read, and it seems Jackson was always one of the main parts of the trade(s), never a throw in or add on: http://mlb.sbnation.com/2012/2/3/2767775/edwin-jackson-washington-nationals-trades
  15. 2 perspectives... This is a great example of a desperate GM making a move to save his job. I get the Royals are loaded with prospects, but that's still no excuse to give up 3 of your top 4 (arguably) best prospects for a decent #2 starter. It seems a little excessive. All that said, from the other side of things I agree with the post above mine here that at some point a GM has to go for it, and clearly Moore is going doing just that. That division isn't very good and I think Moore sees a legit opportunity. Rosenthal had this particular take in his column this morning. That, while these prospects are highly touted they haven't really achieved anything at the big league level so it's hard to say what they'll do for the Rays. Yes, on paper it looks fantastic...but as that cliche goes...the games aren't played on paper. (unless you're an APBA nerd). At some point teams have to stop shooting for Baseball America's 'top prospect ranks' and start being more concerned with the actual MLB team, on the field, you are GM'ing. And great LaPorta analogy.
  16. This is unreal. Just...unreal.
  17. Same here TLB. Huge fan of Jackson. I'd be thrilled if Melvin could somehow sign him to a deal that makes sense for both sides. That said....IMO there is very little chance the Brewers will land any SP in free agency. The contracts are already ridiculous, and when Greinke signs I believe we'll see Dempter, Sanchez and Jackson go pretty quickly, and for money that is beyond what a.) they're worth and b.) the Brewers could (or should) offer.
  18. That's probably because you don't actually watch the Phillies.
  19. That would've been a horrendous deal from MKE's perspective. IMO, Gomez has (or should have) way more value than Worley and May. That's not even close.
  20. Even if he isnt I am not sure what the equivalent of this trade from the Brewers perspective would be - Fiers and Nelson for Revere. Worley is better than Fiers but we dont really have anyone in that mold. Even Fiers and Nelson would be way too much in my mind for Revere No, I understand your point, but that's sort of apples and oranges. The Phils are/were desperate for an everyday CF. The Brewers would never be put in a position to have to make that same deal. The Phils don't want to sign Bourn to an albatross contract. So they got Revere for Worley to give them $$$ flexibility. They also seem to have other pitching prospects that they feel better about than May.
  21. I don't think May is as highly rated as he once was. He wasn't even rated in the top 20 in the league he played in at the end of the season. And speaking of a bit overrated, Vance Worley fits that bill.
  22. The problem is the same set of guys blew almost no saves the year before. What you get with a RP is just so high variance it is hard to convince me that spending a lot on anyone but the total studs is worth it. The market is the market. Conversely, it's hard to convince me that 2/8 is 'overspending' for Burnett. We still have holes in the BP. Weren't some here advocating giving Veras 3 or 4 million this year? Talk about something that would've been pound foolish.
  23. You consider 2/8 overpaying for Burnett? I think that's a great deal for him and would do that every day of the week. What's more, keep it in context of watching this pen blow save after save opp.
  24. First of all Jackson is nowhere near the pitcher Kuroda is regardless of age. Kuroda has a career 3.42 ERA and a 1.182 WHIP vs. Jackson's 4.40 ERA and 1.438 WHIP. Secondly, I'd offer Kuroda more like 1 year $15-16 million, not a 2 year deal. He's not going to turn down a one year $13.3 million deal to take 2 years at less per year than that. The one year offer accomplishes this for the Brewers, (vs. Jackson). They are getting a true no. 1-2 pitcher (vs Jackson who is at best a 3), and they aren't tying a spot or money beyond this year. The risk is that Kuroda at 38 will suddenly drop off, but that risk isn't any worse than Jackson throwing in a clunker year like he has at times in the past. Couple things.... First, so then you'd be ok giving up the 1st round pick for Kuroda? You didn't mention that in your post. Secondly, let's be realistic, if Kuroda wants a one year deal he'll stay in NY.
  25. JohnBriggs12 - So, if I've read your last few posts correctly - giving someone like Jackson (at 29 years old) 3/36 is a very risky and franchise damning move, but giving Hiroki Kuroda (at 38 years old, and received a QO from his own team which would cost any team a first round pick to sign) a 2/26 deal would be something you could endorse. I'm having a hard time following the logic.
