  1. The group I'm attending Opening Day with this year is real serious about their tailgate party. They've gone so far as creating a Facebook group for this year's event. There's also an Opening Day MVP trophy that goes to the person voted as that year's best tailgater. Yes, it's a rowdy bunch and there will be lots of alcohol consumption, beer bongs, beer pong, bag toss, etc. But it isn't all about getting drunk. Last year's winner was female. That's not to say she can't drink with the boys, it just goes to show that she brought more to the party than the ability to shotgun a beer. I'm looking for food suggestions, accessories, and other things people have brought, built, tasted, worn, seen, or heard about that made a tailgate an ultimate experience. So if you' know of a great tailgating recipe, portable structure, game, tip, or accessory please share it here. I just purchased a pretty cool accessory to bring along, but I'd like to contribute more. My goal is to walk away with the MVP trophy but since it's my first year, I'll be happy just being in the running.
  2. More importantly, he's not going to Cincy or St. Louis.
  3. strawboss, you forgot the A's best pitcher..Brett Anderson
  4. You would hope. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to go all-in and then leave glaring weaknesses that diminish the value of your additions.
  5. Actually it seems as though Jeffress's eligibility to be a PTBNL is perfectly intact. The real problem appears to be mass media and the fight to be first with information. Looks like Tom H. and Jeffress's agent may have jumped the gun a bit with denials. It doesn't help that everyone is so fuzzy on MLB rules either. Still hoping Jeffress stays though.
  6. More fun recent tweets... TBrownYahoo - Source: Dodgers were working on Greinke possibilities into weekend, had drawn in a third team to satisfy KC needs, ran out of time. Michael__Raines - RT @Patrick_Donohue: Zack Greinke didn't fit the Royals "overall plan" says Jerry Crasnick. And what friggin' plan would that be? bholcomb - Dear STL Cardinals: did we even participate in the Zack Greinke sweepstakes? howiemag - After seeing what #Brewers were willing to deal for Greinke, wonder if Toronto fans are still happy just getting Lawrie for Marcum. Jacob_Hanson - loves how cards fans already trying to give royals fans !+#$ about Greinke trade. You do realize you have to face him 5 times a year now... asmaness - #Greinke will be a great sidekick to new Brewers ace Shaun Marcum. fauxjohnmadden - Kansas City Royals trade Zach Greinke to Milwaukee Brewers. Royals officially eliminated from postseason until 2016.
  7. You could be right on that one. Would tests for marijuana fall under medical records? Does a player need to be informed when his medical records are being requested? Confidentiality rules? I'm unclear on all of this. Just trying to be 100% sure on Jeffress staying put before I get my hopes up. Don't want to be thrown for a loop later.
  8. Exactly. A few hours ago that same agent said Cain hadn't been told he was traded. They simply don't know until the trade is made. The PTBNL hasn't been informed yet, because KC could change their mind on who that last piece is.
  9. Of course he hasn't been told he's been traded. Whoever the PTBNL is, that individual has not been told he has been traded yet. Only the confirmed players such as Cain have been informed. The fact that Jeffress or any other Brewer player other than Cain, Escobar, and Ordozzi haven't been told they were traded, does not eliminate them from being the PTBNL. Whoever that player winds up being, they and their agent won't be informed until KC makes a decision.
  10. Guys, everything I'm reading is saying the restrictions on a PTBNL apply to active 25 man roster players and players having to switch leagues. Based upon that it seems like Jeffress could be a PTBNL as long as he named before next season. The point behind a PTBNL not being an active major leaguer is so that the team trading away the PTBNL doesn't get continued use of said player in major league games in the meantime. That doesn't apply in the offseason. I'm not saying it will or won't be Jeffress, but I don't think he can be ruled out. My apologies if I'm totally wrong on this.
  11. Are we sure on that PTBNL rule? Is it possible that a player to be named later can't be a player on the 40-man roster when a trade is made in season only. Does that rule apply to offseason trades? Here's why I think the rule does not apply in the offseason... http://forum.orioleshango...s/showthread.php?t=51459 That makes it pretty clear that a player on the active roster can't be a ptbnl during the season. But if Jeffress is named before the 2011 season begins, I think he could be included.
  12. A clue on the PTBNL from Ken Rosenthal's latest column... http://msn.foxsports.com/...e-greinke-over-prospects
  13. I don't think this has been stated firmly enough. The Brewers bent KC over on this deal. The Brewers got the most valuable player in baseball over the last two seasons. Yes, a higher WAR than Halladay and Lee. And they didn't even give up an established star or can't miss blue-chip prospect. Ordozzzi had a 3.50 era in A-ball. Greinke had an ERA of 1.14 in high-A ball. I think there's a good chance Greinke signs an extension with Milwaukee. And even if he doesn't, I wouldn't be surprised if the haul we get for him at the deadline in 2012 is better than what we just gave up.
  14. Could the reason for PTBNL be Kansas City not having room on their 40-man roster? If so, Jeffress could still be the final piece that isn't announced until KC makes room.
  15. For those worried about holes created or future holes, remind yourself of one thing. Coming into this offseason the Brewers had two gaping holes in their rotation. And starting pitching is BY FAR the toughest hole to fill. Look no further than the WS champs. They had a patchwork lineup. But they had the starting pitching. I'd rather have an offseason hole to fill in the everyday lineup than in the starting rotation. It's not even comparable really.
  16. Getting Greinke is an all-in move. You don't trade your top hitting and top pitching prospect in the same offseason without intending to make a playoff appearance. I think you now spend the 5-10 million to shore up any remaining holes. In this case the big one is CF. Unfortunately the market is pretty bare. But Andruw Jones might have a good year left in him. Scotty Pods is out still there and is coming off a solid season.
  17. Please don't jump down my throat if this is wrong, but shouldn't line drive percentage be listed hand and hand with BABIP? I know the premise of BABIP is that if its high it is in part due to the bad luck of having balls find holes at an abnormal rate. But couldn't a high BABIP simply be due to a pitcher having his offerings wacked hard all over the field? And as such, if the pitcher had a coinciding high line drive rate it might indicate that batters found a lot of green grass because the pitcher's offerings were being squared up by the hitters more than that of better pitchers. I just think it's useless to say a pitcher had bad luck with a high BABIP without considering line drive percentage. And I'll go one step further. The fielding metrics of the team's defense would play a role as well I'd think. Teams with poor range mean more holes for batted balls to drop or squeeze through. With the Brewers poor defense, perhaps that in part was why Yo's BABIP was so high. And it could mean not much drop in Shields if he were a Brewer next year. Just something to consider before assuming a high BABIP is fluke and assured of coming down the next year. Again, if I'm way off base, please let me down easy.
  18. 4th starter? He sure as heck isn't going to get paid like one. He was the #2 on an AL playoff team last year. In a perfect world the Brewers would acquire an ace to go with Yo and you could slot 3 thru 5 as Pavano, Wolf, Narveson. But the more likely case if they sign Pavano is that he's the #2. Which isn't that bad since he did it in the tougher league.
  19. Everyone needs to get one thing clearly through their minds. The Brewers aren't dropping their trade pursuits because they think they are close to an extension. They have stopped pursuing trades because they couldn't get in return what they were seeking for him. And that was high quality starting pitching. The Brewers have made it clear to all teams what they want and have no reason to shop for deals. If any team reverses course, they will come to the Brewers with an offer heavy on pitching. In the meantime, you continue to trade numbers with Boras so that when Fielder does hit FA and the offers aren't in ARod land, your offers begin to look pretty good. Melvin is simply keeping the dialogue open. If you go silent with Fielder for the next year, you risk the chance that he takes it as a sign he's unwanted and tunes you out next winter. Again, if the trade offers aren't up to par, you take the 2 comp picks and acquire pitching in the draft. You don't just trade him to trade him. Too many of you are reading this incorrectly as the Brewers ditching all trade attempts and thinking they're on the cusp of an extension. They're not.
  20. Found the Bill Madden column that Heyman got his info from... http://www.nydailynews.co...ian_cashmans_plan_b.html (fixed link --1992)
  21. Just tweeted by Jon Heyman of SI: #brewers owner attanasio at first wanted valentine but had mind changed by others "outside the organization,'' writes bill madden. agreed.
  22. Rays Pirates Royals Mariners Indians
  23. I find it hard to believe but Chicago baseball writer Bruce Levine said on the radio down there today that Ted Simmons was the probable next manager of the Brewers.
