  1. Another reason this deal seems dumb to me is that you have a low cost replacement waiting in the wings in the form of Logan Schaefer...cost-controlled for 6 years. Also very good defensively and projects as a better hitter. This is a real head scratcher.
  2. The Brewers are so going to regret this. I hope I'm wrong. All the reasons to think this one blows up in their face are there. He's cracked a .300 OBP once. Boras actually let a client sign 1 year from free agency. Seriously, what does that tell you?
  3. Wow, surprised no one wants to go young. Personally I'd roll with this... Gallardo Fiers Rogers Peralta Thornburg Long man, 6th starter - Estrada ...take my lumps for one year, put a strong bullpen behind these guys, see what we have in the youngsters, and then look to contend in 2014 with payroll flexibility to shore up whichever spots prove to overwhelmed by major league competition.
  4. Since he'll be throwing junk and topping out at around 85, he'll probably toss a shutout.
  5. Another key to this deal is cost certainty and how it allows the team to try and get Greinke's deal done soon after the ink dries on this one.
  6. What an immensely underrated signing. Watching this guy today at SS and knowing with 100% confidence that he's making plays look routine that Betancourt doesn't get a glove on makes me giddy. We're not talking errors by Yuni here, these are balls that would have found their way into the outfield and gone down as hits. He's going to save quite a few baserunners for our pitchers.
  7. That doesn't solve much since Gamel would be sitting vs. a tough lefty and the response would be to insert another young LH hitter into the lineup?
  8. Not sure if this has been mentioned, I've read this whole thread and didn't see it, but the apparent leak came from someone Braun's team spoke to who betrayed their trust. I apologize if I missed this. From Tom H. twitter... "Let's make this clear for people who want to blame MLB for Braun leak. Somebody his side talked to during process betrayed them." "The Commissioner's office knows who did it; the players union knows who did; and Braun's people know who did it. That was the leak." "I didn't say I know the guy's name. I'm saying I've been told that MLB, the union and Braun's people know. It'll probably get out somehow."
  9. Apparently MLB's drug testing program allows for "multiple possible defenses" unlike that of the NFL. That according to David Cornwell who helped represent Braun in his appeal. It's news to me... http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/22/ryan-braun-case-highlights-differences-between-mlb-nfl-drug-testing-policies/ All I've been hearing is that there was no defense. A true positive means suspension no matter the reason even if there was an innocent excuse. This suggests otherwise. Possible reason for hope? He also provides the Antwan Odom example in which Odom served a 4 game suspension in the NFL that he feels would have been overturned under the MLB program.
  10. Let me get this straight...they're going to hang on to McGehee and pay him more than what Hairston just signed for, after benching McGehee in favor of Hairston in the most important stretch of games the franchise played in the last 29 years. Yep, that makes a ton of fiscal sense.
  11. Tweet from Tom Haudicourt...
  12. Who are the four players in Brewers history to compile seasons of 30 HRs, 100 RBI's, and a .300+ batting average. Ryan Braun (2011) Cecil Cooper (1982, 1983) Ben Oglivie (1980) and who could forget John Jaha (1996) The real stumper of course is Jaha. Common wrong answers are Prince, Yount, Molitor, Jenkins, Burnitz. Also, a great resource for coming up with Brewers trivia questions is the Franchise Timeline on Brewers.com Just about every factoid listed from 1970 to present could be turned into a trivia question. Here's the link.... http://mlb.mlb.com/mil/history/timeline.jsp
  13. Don't think so, he's too fickle. He really likes his usual 4 day rest. Besides, the next game would be Sunday not Saturday. He'd be on 6 days rest.
  14. BA was laying one jinx after another out there for the last few innings. 'They haven't done this since'.... 'Furcal has hit 5 homers vs. Milwaukee', etc.I've decided to pretend he was doing the reverse jinx all night.
  15. I say keep Greinke on his preferred 4 days rest. As for Sunday's game in Milwaukee I'd have a hard time throwing Marcum back out there.
  16. Yep, and the Brewers hitters familiarity with what they throw keeps on growing.
  17. And Greinke gets to pitch on his normal 4 days rest tomorrow. Hopefully that means we get the sharp Greinke, the ace-like Greinke.
  18. Wow, BA really trying to jinx it there with the comment about St. Louis and hitting w/ RISP
  19. Pat on the back for RR. One less look at the pen for the Cards. And props to Wolf for coming up huge tonight.
  20. The fewer looks they get at Wolf the better.. when you are up $1000 in Vegas you don't push it all in on one last hand.. take the house money and run.. it still may work out but I prefer to play the odds... It's like russian roulette. Why keep pulling the trigger when you can rest on the one who got you safely to this point. The more pitchers you use the more likely you are to find the guy who's off his game. And Randy Wolf is definitely on his game tonight. It's exactly why I'm convinced LaRussa's bullpen micro management is gonna bite him in the ass at some point this series.
  21. I'll go out on a limb and say I think Wolf should go back out there for the 7th. He's on his game, and the fewer looks the Cardinals get of our bullpen the better. Much the way I think the Brewers will eventually start pounding the St. Louis bullpen if given the chance.
