  1. Another important variable, thanks for noting it. If anything out there was specific it seemed to indicate that the Brewers did their due diligence and any specific numbers on offers seemed to show the Brewers were nowhere near the terms of what these guys signed for. If memory serves, the Brewers offer to Darvish wasn't even close and Cobb reportedly only got a 1-year offer. So before you chalk it up to luck, you have to consider at least 3 things: they may not have even been after some of these guys, the price tag placed on them might have been much less risky and in line with their performance, and finally the possibility that any and all of these guys could have fared much better with this run saving defense and a pitching coach producing above average results. I know it takes time to erase bad memories but Brewers fans might have to start looking at this as a place pitchers go and improve, rather than get worse as we have long been accustomed to.
  2. Also moderators, any chance we can clean up some of this? Trying to be open minded about how the results with these pitchers could have been different under different conditions and instruction does not equate to being on the "Stearns and Co. are geniuses train".
  3. That's a good point and yet another variable to consider.
  4. Well, I'm trying to be factual and paint a broader picture of the possible outcomes given the countless number of variables. That's the alternative to simply declaring the Brewers front office got lucky like you did.
  5. To be even more fair, the Brewers reportedly offered significantly less to any of the guys on that list that were offered than what they ultimately got. And furthermore, it's entirely possible that any one of those guys could have better success working with pitching coach Derek Johnson. There are countless ways he could have tweaked these guys to produce better results. Anything from changing grips, developing new pitches, teaching better sequencing, simplifying delivery, changing position on the rubber, etc. Those are all things current Brewers pitchers have credited Johnson with helping them to achieve better results. So I wouldn't call setting a price and sticking to it being "lucky to be outbid". And there's no telling if these guys would have been a "disaster" here under entirely different settings and instruction. Edited to add that I believe the Brewers defense currently ranks 2nd in defensive runs saved so just about every pitcher would have better numbers even if all other conditions were replicated. And any flyball pitcher on the list would have benefited from the major league's best outfield in defensive runs saved.
  6. Miller Thames Aguilar Shaw Perez Villar Broxton Kratz Chacin If someone awoke from a coma that began in March of last year, they's see that lineup and only recall Villar, Broxton, and Perez as anyone with a stint of major league success with the Brewers. They'd also assume this was a team on pace to lose well over 100 games.
  7. This only applies for people who don't understand the value of defense and how many hits Cain turns into outs. And even with the injuries Cain has still played 2 more games than Aguilar and has a 2.8 OWAR to Aguilar's 2.0 OWAR. Before even getting into defense, Cain leads the Brewers in hits, BBs, SBs, AVG, and OBP.
  8. Ryan Braun was in the majors for good in just under 2 years after being drafted. He was drafted in June 2005 and made his MLB debut on May 25, 2007. If Keston follows the same timeline he'll be in Milwaukee just prior to next year's draft. That being said, the 2006 Milwaukee Brewers had zero postseason aspirations and thus no need to get Braun up to help win games. The 2018 Milwaukee Brewers are just a little bit different and have a glaring hole at 2B.
  9. I'm not at all saying that every move should be praised. I personally hate the fact that Keon Broxton is back on this team even though he hasn't improved his K rate one bit. Some here are taking criticism too far. It can't be stressed enough how foolish it is to be over the top critical without a full plate of info. And the notion of someone being a "Stearns man" is ridiculous. To anyone who isn't a "Stearns man", who the heck do you want as GM instead?
  10. So much anger and angst against a front office that has delivered a team none of us expected going back just 15 months ago. The way some of you complain, one would think the team was in last place in a season where the Brewers were the preseason favorites to win the pennant. And now there's such a thing as being a "Stearns man". Who the heck here isn't a "Stearns man"? And second, what the heck is wrong with you?
  11. Outfield defense has been elite.
  12. The Brewers are one of the best (if not the best) teams at saving runs on defense. I love Aguilar but he's not the reason for that stat. Cain is this team's clear MVP.
  13. Before I'm going to point in the direction of the uncertainty of playing everyday, I'm going to chalk it up to 4 consecutive black holes in the lineup most days. I think the number of days the offense doesn't show up has entirely to do with counting on half the lineup to produce the offense. Plug a SS, C, or 2B who can hit and I think there will be more consistency. Hopefully at least 2 of those 3 spots are filled soon.
  14. People revisiting this today actually have to think more than a second about it?
  15. I'm gonna give it another series or two before I predict their June record.
  16. Your last few posts have been complaining about this forum, why? It's right there in the second sentence of the post you quoted. That TJSeven7 (or whatever his name is) sure quieted down after his foolish rant on Stearns for not signing Cobb. These wild swings of emotion and snap judgments really bring down the intelligence level of the forum. This place has been around a really long time. The level of discussion should be much higher by now. There are a few very intelligent and informed people here whose contributions keep bringing me back. But it's being diluted more and more by over the top criticism and statements made as fact from people missing way too much information. Here's the deal with Hiura. He could just as easily be Stearns chiseled in answer at 2B as he could be Stearns biggest trade piece. A 5-5 day at the plate, and a promotion to AA wouldn't change those plans. It would be crazy to think the organization changes its mind like that. No one here knows. His bat is clearly amazing but Stearns has been shown a propensity to gradually replace players of suspect glove. So maybe no matter what numbers he puts up on offense, he might very well be looked at as a trade chip. Or they may look at his bat as elite and worth enough to more than offset his defensive liabilities. The key words there being "maybe", "might" and "may".
  17. Lol, there's no way you believe that number.
  18. These are your own words from another topic... You know exactly what I'm talking about when it comes to the high level of irrationality that exists on this forum.
  19. I'm surprised people still treat this place like it's overreaction Monday when they always come away with egg on their faces. Holding on to this foolish hope for a more advanced discussion.
  20. Do you ever venture over to the trade forum? Really?
  21. So today he's untradeable and the arm is a non-issue. I believe less than a week ago, perhaps even yesterday, he was a solid trade piece and surgery was inevitable, so they should just get it out of the way now. Just trying to keep up.
  22. The Brewers have the most defensive runs saved in baseball. Arcia is a huge part of that. There are other ways to contribute signifcantly to winning other than with the bat. Let's be better than this.
  23. Amazing what one week does for a player's status. Not saying I disagree with the current high praise for Ray, but maybe the answer is to exercise a little more patience before drawing conclusions on these guys. People were throwing Ray in like a bag of balls on trade proposals not more than a few weeks ago. There'd be a lot of awful GMs here. Sadly many of those awful GMs seem convinced they would make great ones. To put the emphasis back solely on Ray, it should be highlighted that he's doing this in AA. That's a hugely encouraging development as it's arguably the most important minor league level. Many single A stars have hit the developmental wall at AA where many near major leaguers reside. He needs to keep this up for a full season though.
  24. I think they need to change the name of 1st base to "Cain Landing" because the guy absolutely lives there.
  25. She's short, her bellybutton sticks out too far, and she's a terrible burden on her mother.
