  1. Why does Ned still think Villanueva can give him more than one inning? Why did Ned go to Spurling after Villanueva crapped out? The game still appears to have been close at the time of the change. Is Turnbow hurt? Did Linebrink's wife go into labor again? Is Parra dead? Did Ned realize that tomorrow is an off day? I didn't look for anything from Ned postgame, so I guess I am left with questions and no answers for now. Thanks.http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif
  2. The mental side of the game is important, too. You remind him of that, but you don't need to rake him over the coals over it.
  3. 2003: 31-50 home/37-44 road 2004: 36-45 home/31-49 road 2005: 46-35 home/35-46 road 2006: 48-33 home/27-54 road 2007: 39-20 home/21-35 road Not sure there's enough of a trend there to blame it on Yost. But it's interesting that this team has been pretty bad on the road for three years in a row now, even when they've been decent or better at home.
  4. Thanks, FSN, for not broadcasting today's baseball game. Thanks, me, for not bothering to turn on the radio. Thanks, Brewers, for not bothering to even drag this along. It will almost be a relief when the Cardinals regain control of the division, because it will mean we can all return to our normal lives.
  5. Just our luck, I picked up an advance copy of the script. SCRIPT FOR MILWAUKEE - COLORADO SERIES Monday: Colorado wins Tuesday: Colorado wins Wednesday: Colorado wins Wednesday: Brewers leave for Houston. BrewerFan.Net explodes in a shower of justified negativity. http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif
  6. A manager should know his talent. Certainly, this isn't going to happen immediately. A guy isn't going to know everything he needs to know about a player simply by looking at numbers while sitting in his office. There needs to be a sense of when a guy needs a day off, and when a certain player is in a good spot and needs to be in the lineup more often. Such things shouldn't be left up to gut feelings or simple looks at the matchups. An example would be if Jenkins really gets dialed in and starts ripping the ball. If that happens, you can't just autmatically sit him against lefties. There are some lefties you wouldn't let him hit against, but there are also some that you would let him take a shot at if he was swinging well enough. There happens to be a manager in the NL Central who I think is doing close to a pathetic job of managing his bullpen. That, along with the fact that a bunch of guys in the bullpen are stinking up the joint right now, is really hurting the team. http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif
  7. Quick question: How much of what happened today can be attributed to rotten luck? The strike zone conveniently shrunk to the size of a peanut in the ninth, we hit a bunch of balls on the screws right at people when the game was on the line, they hit a bunch of bleeders to score runs, and Rowand was out on that check swing save for a gutless third-base umpire. After watching the Cubs get horrifically lucky in that six-run inning yesterday, it was something that stood out for me. I'm not absolving Wise, Cordero, Parra, and/or Yost or Braun or whoever. Just wanted to throw that thought out there.
  8. Will we make another move for a position player, or keep going with a bit of a short bench?
  9. I doubt there is any correlation, but on June 15, Brian Shouse came on and got a three-inning save against Minnesota. This was a point in the season where his struggles were pretty well-chronicled. Including that appearance, here are his numbers since: 20 G, 19 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 11 K 0.00 ERA, 2.75 K/BB Just wanted to offer a tip of the cap to the gentleman. Well done, sir. (added tag -TC) (unambigufied thread title -1992)
  10. Um. Yost hasn't won a championship, hasn't quit on his team because he wanted a better job, and he doesn't have any streets named after him in Milwaukee. So, yeah, I don't get it, either. http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/happy.gif
  11. Great, now we all have to try to figure out why he and Graffy got into it.
  12. Well, I guess that beats potentially having to blame his boy Maddux for the recent shortcomings on the pitching staff.
  13. Or is this a vent thread deal? Brewers have altercation in dugout (added 'clickability' to link --1992) (consolidated tags --1992)
  14. Following a major bridge collapse in the Twin Cities. Not far from the Metrodome.
  15. Fair enough. My bad. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Outside of the draft, the options are limited. They really don't have any money to go out and spend on free agents. Like I said before, I think $70M for a payroll is actually well beyond their means because of their revenue problems. And outside of the inadequacies in drafting and developing young talent (some of these issues also revolve around the budgetary problems), they have done about as well as possible in building the team. Sure. But then who pitches when Radke retires, Silva walks, and Santana eventually walks? They have one extra major-league-ready starter right now (Slowey) who isn't in the Twins' rotation. They're probably going to lose Silva after this season, and Santana is definitely gone after 2008. Even if you add Liriano back into the mix for 2008, they're still not in a position to trade a starter because they really don't have an extra starter available. Like I said, the biggest organizational weakness has been in the development of young position players. You're right that it could be solved via trades, but those are only a patchwork solution. I wish Santana would have walked into Ryan's office, shut the door, and handled this like I would expect him to. I don't think that it was right to go to the media. Perhaps if he had talked to Ryan, he could have learned a few things about the structure of the organization that render Ryan handcuffed on a lot of this stuff.
  16. Really? Happens all the time here with the Twins. (In fact, it happened the last time the Twins were on ESPN and FSN at the same time. They're probably batting about .500 with the ESPN blackout in those cases.) I'll take it. I don't think tonight's game is on HD for DirecTV people. I'll take HD if it means I have to listen to Steve Phillips, I guess.
  17. My wife had a C-section with our son. After she was hospitalized for three days afterward, she developed an infection near the incision and had to spend another week in the hospital after that. During that time, she was limited in what she could do with the boy, and I ended up working a limited schedule at the radio station so I could spend as much time at the hospital as possible. (The hospital folks were kind enough to provide us with a room that the three of us could stay in for the week.) So, yeah, I'm not going to rip the Brewers or Scott Linebrink. I'm glad they're helping him take care of his family, and I hope that he'll be granted an extra day or two (or whatever he needs) if Friday is too soon to come back.
  18. OK. Now how many of those guys would you have paid to keep? In pretty much every one of those cases, Ryan made the right move. The one guy who's been pretty good since leaving Minnesota is AJ, but you can't argue with a move that nets you a starting pitcher, a phenom pitcher (if he can come back healthy), and a top closer. A $71 million payroll is probably spending beyond that franchise's means, considering the horrific lease they have at the Metrodome. I'm all for having Billionaire Uncle Carl spend money, but how much money should he be sinking into the team on an annual basis with little or no financial return? I'm almost certain that this isn't about the Castillo trade, and is instead about guys they COULD have signed over the last couple of offseasons. If that's the case, then Santana has a legitimate point, because the offseason action hasn't been very good. But if Santana thinks they should have kept Castillo and gone after some offensive help, I'd suggest that some enterprising Twin Cities reporter ask him who he thinks the team should have coveted, and who he would suggest they give up in return, given their non-existent farm system depth at the moment.
  19. Shulman = Awesome Hershiser = Very Good Phillips = Why, Norby? Why?
  20. Um. No. Santana had a highly-paid Brad Radke behind him in the rotation until last year when Radke got tired of his shoulder hurting and retired. Outside of David Ortiz, who the Twins let go because he couldn't stay healthy enough to play every day, who have the Twins lost as far as position players go in recent years? And who are they going to sign on a pretty tight budget? What is killing the Twins is that their position player development has, for whatever reason, lagged way behind their pitcher development. They don't have a single guy high in their system who would remind us of Braun/Fielder/Weeks, and while they have some nice defensive infielders, I'm not sure they have anyone with Hardy's upside. Well, that hurts, and so does the fact that until this week, they were paying almost 8% of their total payroll for a slap-hitting second baseman. Oh, and that 8% of the payroll being spent on Ramon Ortiz and Rondell White isn't helping matters much. As much as I respect Terry Ryan, I will admit that many of his acquisitions in recent years have been questionable in nature. But that's not his fault. He's handcuffed because the young guys aren't developing like they should, and the money isn't there to replenish the system in one fell swoop, nor is it there to stack the major-league roster while you wait for the young guys to come around.
  21. Casey-- Don't bet on that. When the Twins are on ESPN here (I live where both the Twins and Brewers are "home" teams), and they're on FSN, the ESPN feed is supposed to be blacked out, replaced by a black screen and the infamous "Program not available in your area" screen. I'm assuming that the Brewers are under the same restriction, though I don't know because they haven't had any games that were on ESPN and on FSN this year. And there are times that DirecTV screws up and doesn't black out the feed. That's usually a good thing for me, since I have HD but I don't get the FSNs in HD yet. So when the Twins are playing on ESPN, a mess-up by DirecTV means I can watch the game in HD. As long as Sutcliffe isn't on the broadcast team, I'll follow that creed tonight. If Sutcliffe is working, I'm pretty sure I'll suck it up and watch FSN in "standard definition".
  22. I just find it funny that the guy making $13,000,000 this year (Santana) and the guy making $12,000,000 (Hunter) are frustrated with the fact that an organization that has a long-standing reputation for being pretty tightly-budgeted isn't spending money.
  23. The Twins don't have much position player depth in the farm system, as referenced by the schlubs they've called up at various points this season. Do you really think it would be smart to mortgage the future for a two-month rental of Jermaine Dye? Frankly, I think it was borderline dumb not to trade Hunter, considering the haul they could have netted for him in such a horrible position player market. This team isn't going to make the playoffs unless at least two teams who have better records start playing worse.
  24. Linky. Interesting stuff. Clearly, Santana appears poised to walk after next season, and I cringe at the thought of what he'll command on the open market. But for now, I guess I'd tell him to "Shut up, take the ball every fifth day, and do your job". I'm not comfortable with him telling a pretty accomplished GM how to do his job.
