  1. I don't know what's bigger news, that Beltre signed this big deal, or that they have websites in the Dominican Republic. I guess I was just picturing communication through smoke signals or something. Or, possibly, pigeons.
  2. Uh...I'm going to assume this was a typo.God i hope so. I'm thinking he meant 19 per year.
  3. I've learned over the years, that it doesn't matter what the cubs look like on paper. They will always under perform expectations. In another 102 years, our great-grandchildren will be talking about the cubs still not winning a world series. Some things are just meant to be.
  4. Cappy Like everyone else here, I wish you the best wherever you end up. You've always been classy, hard-working, and genuine and if anyone deserves good things to happen, it's you. You've always been one of the easiest players to cheer for, and with your character, I knew that your would never do something stupid to embarrass Brewer nation. If there is a type of athlete for kids to look up to and emulate, you are that type of athlete. Good luck with everything.
  5. The only problem with this, is it seems like a lot of people on here are penciling Cappy in, as being a Brewer. There is probably a few teams that can guarantee him a rotation spot out of spring and I don't think we would at this point. I would love for him to come back and be our fifth starter because I think our depth would be better at that position than in recent memory. Here's hoping they sign him, but until they do, I don't think we can put him on the 25 man yet.
  6. The Stallworth case was much different. The guy he hit ran out into the middle of traffic on a busy six lane road early in the morning. Stallworth stopped immediately and called 911 and cooperated fully with the police. Gallo, who was on parole for a felony DUI, ran a red light and fled the scene. I even remember a quote from a family member of Reyes stating they felt bad for Stallworth as well since it was a very unfortunate accident. I'm not absolving Stallworth from all blame, but the situation was certainly different than what happened with Adenhart. I don't know if Gallo deserves to die in prison, but what he did was remarkably callous.Another big difference is that this is Gallo's 3rd offense and it was Stallworth's 1st. Plus, in Gallo's previous offenses he was told that if he did drive drunk again and killed someone, he could and would be charged with 2nd degree murder which he was. He knew the consequences and how serious the ramifications would be. It was his choice and he chose poorly.
  7. What about Coffey? Any chance we bring him back? There was an article on SI's website about the Greinke deal and they still had Coffey in our bullpen, so i'm assuming that they don't know a whole lot about the brewers and just assumed that we brought him back.
  8. I wouldn't pencil Capuano in yet though. Unless I missed something he hasn't signed, and now that the Brewers traded for a couple pitchers he might want to go someplace where he might have a better chance of starting. Just my opinion. Would love to have Capuano here though.
  9. I agree about Capuano. Our starting staff is much much better than last year or the year before, but as we all know you can't get through the season with only 5 or 6 starters. You usually need 8 or 9 and right now I don't think we have that. Capuano could be the fifth starter, or long man and spot starter. Then Parra and Narveson who could start, and Rogers in AAA able to come up and start a few if needed. We need depth just like every other team out there.
  10. If Doug gets us to the playoffs this year and/or next year, that means he has done better than any other GM we have ever had. Lest we forget, in our 40 year existence we've only been to the playoffs twice.
  11. Not to get off topic, but if Jeffress isn't part of the deal, what do you guys think about still using Jeffress and Gamel to try to get Shields/Garza from Tampa. We already gutted the farm, and if really want to go all in for the next couple years, we're going to need 8 or 9 starters throughout the year anyways. Nothing against Narveson, but I'd rather have him and Rogers as depth and have an opening day rotation of Greinke, Yo, Marcum, Garza/Shields, Wolf with Narveson and Rogers as the 6 and 7. Is our payroll maxed out for this? My only main concern is that every team needs a staff that is 8 or 9 deep throughout the year, and this gives us unbelievable depth that the Brewers have probably never had.
  12. Yahoo is still reporting that Jeffress is in this deal, but people you guys are saying that it's not him? Or am I getting old information, and it's Cain, Escobar, Jake O, and PTBNL? If Jeffress isn't included and the PTBNL is a spare part prospect, then we really bent KC over the table on this one. So, just to clarify, Jeffress isn't included, is included, or not sure yet?
  13. I'm not talking about other players judging Prince or Counsel, I'm talking about players judging themselves. When it's all said and done, players will more often play an extra couple years to try to win a title. It's almost like that one title will complete they're career. And, it is an opinion when I say wins are the most important thing in baseball. That's what an opinion is. If you say OPS is the most important stat, that's your opinion. Plus, since this is about the best careers going forward, like you said, I still think Ryan Howard will have the best stats at the end of his career. Honestly, I've never seen any of those SS play, (i'm only 29 yo) so I'll never rank someone if I haven't actually seen em. But, how would you rank, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and Warren Moon. FYI i'm going to be gone for about a week or so. Not sure if i'll be able to check the message board.I
  14. I guess that's what i like about opinion polls, people are never going to see things the same way. But, I think the reason I judge players on winning, rather than stats, is because that's how they judge themselves. I've never heard a retirement speech where a players only regret is that they never led the league in OPS+, but I've heard tons of speeches about their only regret being they never won a title.
  15. I don't think it's the same. Baseball and Basketball are two different games and are judged differently. Baseball players are judged by stats first, winning second. NBA is judged on winning first, stats second.
  16. Okay, I can dig that argument. And I'll be willing to take out the fact that AGon hasn't won and Howard has. But, the basic topic of the thread, was who will have a better career going forward, and one of the main things to judge a players career on, are whether or not they won. And Howard wins. But, if we're going to stick to the basis of the thread which is "who will have a better career going forward", I still don't see AGon's stats measuring up to Howard. The basis of the thread isn't who is a better player, it's who will have a better career going forward, and baseball is measured on stats. I feel that Gonzalez is a better overall "player", but his "stats" will never measure up to Howard as long as they stay on the teams they're currently on. And when people measure a baseball player's career, the measurement will always be based on stats. It's just the nature of the sport. And, when I talk about winning I mean winning the whole thing. Lebron can add 20 wins to any team he wants, but he hasn't "won" anything. And until he wins, they're will be dozens of players in the history of hoops better than him. On an entirely different note though (and I was just curious on peoples opinion), when we're talking about players, how come winning shouldn't be used to evaluate them, but when we evaluate coaches or managers, that's all that matters? In my opinion, players have more impact on winning and losing than managers or coaches, regardless of the sport.
  17. I'm not asking anybody to agree or disagree with me. All I'm saying is that I'm not shocked that Howard would be near the top of peoples list. Simply because he is one of the best power bats in the game. And I do think that when you're evaluating players from different teams, the ball park that they play in shouldn't be a detriment to the player, rather it should be a positive to the player. Especially since, like you said, we're predicting future numbers. Obviously, there is no way to know what team either player is going to play for going forward, but if Howard stays playing in a hitters park, and Gonzalez stays playing in a pitchers park, Howard's future stats are going to blow Gonzalez out of the water. So, if were predicting future stats, the ball park shouldn't be used to hurt Howard going forward, it should be used to help him. Plus, people can choose to discount any stat they want, and put importance on any other stat they want, but the bottom line for baseball or any other sport is winning and losing. And in baseball, you win by scoring more runs than the other guy. So, whatever someones feelings are about RBI's not being important, RBI's means your scoring runs, and therefore helping to win. In the same breath, the most important stat in baseball is "wins". No other stat matters, if you don't win. So, I'll never be convinced to discount "wins", or "ws wins", because what stat is more important than wins? But, like I said, this is an opinion poll. I'll never convince you I'm right, and you'll never convince me you're right.
  18. I'm not shocked. Baseball is a stat driven game, and if you look at Howard's stats, he's impressive. I personally would rather have Gonzalez on my team, but that's mainly just because of his contract compared to Howard. If you take contract out of the picture, Howard has him beat in almost every statistical category, other than strikeouts. You can say defense offsets offense, but then again, Howard's defense hasn't seemed to hurt the Phillies all that much the last few seasons. (Two world series, one win). I'd be ok with that. My list based just on talent: Tex Fielder Youkalis Howard Morneau Gonzalez But, that's the great thing about opinion polls, everyone can be right, and you can prove an opinion wrong.
  19. Any reason Axford doesn't get a chance? I don't see how he does worse. Worst case scenario, he blows saves and we lose. That's already happening. I know Hoffman wants to get to 600 saves, and that's cool. But, I don't care if I see that ever happen. I want to see the Brewers win. All I know, they need to do something, because they lost my money till they do. I'm not spending money on tickets plus gas from Green Bay to watch a losing blowout. I don't understand what has to happen before management grows a pair and gets rid of some of these overpaid vets that aren't contributing. (Suppan, Hoffman, Vargas, Hawkins). And I mean cut them, not trade, or put em on the DL. Cut them. Honestly whats the difference between paying them to lose games or paying them to just go away and not be here anymore. At least if we cut them, we'll be paying them and they won't be hurting us on the field, just financially. Right now, they're hurting us on the field and financially. I would rather pay those guys to stop hurting my team then pay them to lose and clog up a roster spot.
  20. If that's the case, I don't think his contract is that much of an issue. It would only be a year plus at minimum.
  21. I know what you mean man. This years NFL draft was disappointing too. I can't believe I went undrafted for an eleventh straight year. I'm almost ready to just retire from football all together.
  22. Nothing against the guy, but Davey Nelson is very very very not tolerable for me as an on-air personality. Would much rather have Jenks or Rillo.
  23. Exactly Briggs. For me, if they seem like good guys that really respect the game and treat the fans good, then I can't help but cheer for them. Evan Longoria, right now, is my favorite non-Brewer player, and it's probably because he's a young, talented, breath of fresh air and hopefully he gives the Yanks and Sox huge headaches for the next decade or so. I actually wish he would be hyped by the media much more, and I don't think I'd get sick of it, unless it turns him into an arrogant jerk. But, so far I don't see that happening. It's kind of a double edge sword, because I think he's the best overall player in that division, but since he doesn't play for the big two, he doesn't get the hype. Hayward, Strasburg, and Chapman, on the other hand, don't have to play in that division, so I think they have a better chance at that media affection.
  24. I'm ok with the media getting behind him and hyping him as much as they are. From listening to interviews, he's a good kid, with a good head on his shoulders and he seems really humble with all the success that he's had so far. I would love for a guy like him to become the face of MLB, and that doesn't happen without the media. It's just nice for them to cover a player like him for a change, even though he doesn't work in New York or Boston, and he doesn't seem like a complete showboat or a jerk. Refreshing would be the word.
  25. I know we all want to see some good pitching come in here via trade, and I'm in that boat too. But, lets not forget, our hitting has been pretty poor too so far this year. No matter how good your pitching is, you can't win with zero runs scored. So, whether we lose 2 to 0 or 10 to 0, it really doesn't matter. This team has holes everywhere right now. It's not a quick fix, by bringing in some pitching.
