  1. Hardy has always been streaky - 2007 it was April and May that he went on a tear - last year it was June/July when he hit .328 with 13 homers during that span. I do like the idea of Buchholz as a long term solution, but doing the trade now runs a huge risk with breaking up team chemistry - seems this trade is much better suited for the offseason.
  2. Good points kramnoj - I guess the main issue I had is some think he slides into the brewers rotation right now and improves it. Like you said, this would be a move that would be made for the future of the team.
  3. I think some people are putting a pretty high value on Buchholz - Sox would do this deal in a heartbeat if the brewers were looking to deal, but they aren't. Buchholz does have a no hitter - while it's great he has one, it doesn't mean he'll be successful in the long term (Anibal Sanchez threw one but hasn't done much since). Buchholz also went 2-9 last year with a 6.75 ERA. Sure, he is a top prospect - but he is not a sure thing and isn't on the level of say a David Price or Tommy Hanson (which some would have you think). With the depth the sox have they wouldn't hesitate to trade a top pitching prospect for a proven MLB allstar if he filled a need. If he was that good - the sox wouldn't have signed Smoltz and Penny this past offseason.
  4. Thanks for the updates bob - good stuff. A guy on the JSOnline blogs is claiming that he heard on a chicago radio station that a Peavy trade is close to being done with the cards or brewers....... take it for what it's worth but I thought I would pass it along.
  5. But over those 5.2 scoreless innings he had 5 walks. It was more luck than actually figuring anything out in regards to his control.Yet he still hadn't given up a run, luck doesn't get you out of those jams..... his last outing he struck out 2 - I'm not saying Julio is good, but he pitched well enough to warrant getting a shot in a close ball game, even more so when the bullpen has been overworked in the past week. At some point, he had to be given a chance, otherwise why carry the guy on the roster? He got his shot, failed and now he is gone.
  6. He hadn't given up a run in his last 4 appearances which covered 5.2 innings - It was time to put him out there and see if he was going to be able to perform in close games, At some point it had to happen.
  7. I worded that poorly, my line of thinking was that if he continues to pitch the way he does he'll end up a closer to 150 than he would to 180/190 At most he would get 32 starts - 113 games left, divide that by 5 and it is 22.6 - if he stays healthy all season, doesn't get skipped and starts to pitch better then he'll get another 22 starts and hit the 32 mark. However, if he continues to pitch the way he has this season I don't see Macha sticking with him over the course of the entire season - if Macha does then he should hit the 170 mark - but I think he's going to get a demotion if he continues to give batters free passes..... if he can get his control under control, then we might see him reach his potential, but something just seems off with him..... not sure if it's just a lack of experience and/or confidence, but one stat that jumps out at me is how he is matching up against lefties this year. They are hitting .333 against him and he's given up 10 walks to lefties (2.29 WHIP)....... that's just unacceptable for a LHP. I hope he gets it together, but I wouldn't be sad to see him go along with some lower level prospects if it meant we were gettinng a #1 pitcher back.
  8. Parra should be in the 180-190 range but unless he turns things around quickly, he is going to end up at around 150. He's averaging a bit over 5 innings per start now and yes, the ERA is bad because of the twins game but even if you take that start away he still has an era of 4.5 - I like Parra too, but I think some of us (including myself) overestimated how good he would be.
  9. I'll preface by saying I'm not into all the stat predictions and perhaps I am reading it wrong but Zips projection has:Peavy going 16 and 11 with 200+ innings and a 3.41 ERA Parra going 8 and 13 with 151 innings and a 5.00 ERA Yes, if the trade happened Peavy's ERA may jump a little with the move to Miller - but he'll also get better run support and it would also be about 50 less innings on the BP.... that could prove to be extremely valuable at the end of the season. To me, if those numbers even come close it is worth a heck of a lot more than 2-3 wins.
  10. Good read Invader - Whether it is Peavy, Lee, Webb or someone else, I expect the brewers to acquire an above average pitcher within the next month. I think Melvin and Mark A know they have a window here and they are going to approach it aggressively.
  11. I think Peavy equals more than 2 wins than Parra - You've got to take into account that he'll throw more innings, lighten the workload on the bullpen in the process and over the past 3 seasons his ERA is about 1.25 runs better and almost a full 2 runs better this season. (and he's also gotten off to a slow start) Peavy is only about 1 1/2 years older than Parra as well - so we'd have an elite young pitcher locked up. Yes, 4 years $70 million isn't cheap - but like I said he is young, hasn't shown signs of injury and also hasn't been overworked in SD. If you can get away with Parra and keeping Gamel/Escobar, I think you have to make this deal.
  12. I've thought lopez would be a perfect fit since the day Weeks went down - he should come cheaply since he is on a 1 year deal from the D'backs and they are clearly looking to get younger. I know I read something about the D'backs possibly wanting to move Webb as well, but I believe it was just a writer speculating......
  13. Giles does have a big contract, but it's the final year so he would be off the books. It all hinges on Peavy waiving his no trade clause.... I just don't see it happening unless the brewers guarantee the option year.
  14. Hopefully - but I have a feeling it's going to be a minor deal.
  15. So a guy that is hitting .382 vs lefties this season and hit .306 last season vs lefties would be ideal for the 2 hole, right? I think Macha is giving Hall his chance - I don't expect Macha to continue to give him chances. I just want to know when Gamel is going to get his chance against LHP.
  16. Per rotoworld - Cleveland is looking to move Derosa, however they are looking for major league ready pitchers.
  17. Didn't he also clear waivers at the start of last season?
  18. I wonder if Macha is going to start Gamel again tomorrow after the game he is having tonight...... With Gamel being able to hit lefties, it might be best to give him a shot at being the everyday 3b and move the current 3b soft platoon of Hall/Counsell to 2b.
  19. I take back everything I ever said about Gamel's defense - wow, that was one heck of a play. Great to see the kid knock one out in his first start as well.
  20. Felipe Lopez is on a 1 year deal with the D'Backs for 3.5 million - I can't imagine them wanting much with the way their season is going. Switch hitter too......
  21. Would the D-Backs want to deal Felipe Lopez? I don't see Roberts as a realistic option - would cost us a ton in prospects and $10 mil a year isn't cheap in this economy, plus I think the O's really aren't interested in moving him.
  22. Just googled it and Roberts signed a 4 yr/$40 million dollar deal in the offseason......
  23. Ugh...... this sucks. Heart goes out to the guy...... Didn't Brian Roberts recently sign a contract extension? Rotoworld suggests that it could be Durham or Grudzielanek and they also mention Ronnie Belliard as being on the trade block...... Derosa would be intersting, but I'm not sure if the Indians are looking to move him at this point.
  24. I think the argument that 'they don't stop you from doing it, so it must be ok' is a real slippery slope. I mean if a bank leaves it doors and vaults open one night........ ok, not the greatest comparison but you get my point. The ushers assume you are going to the seats you paid for - next time ask them if it's ok, see if they still let you. That answers your question right there. Just because you can do something and can get away with it - doesn't make it right.
