  1. Hey, I am not going to defend the guy to death. He looks like he can be a good everyday starter, can put up good numbers, comes cheap, and is controlled for five more years. For one expensive year of a starting pitcher lots of teams passed on last season when there was the opportunity to get him.....................I am just saying let's point out warts on everyone and we can find reasons why each side might want to go in another direction.
  2. It might be reaching by the dots I connect, but my point is basically easy to understand. If F=C and C=H, then F=H (which means Fielder could certainly command the plethora of talented prospects that Toronto foolishly turned down from numerous teams for Halladay.
  3. A utility IF coming off a career year? He's a freaking rookie. If you've watched us all year, you can tell he gets it and is likely going to put up some very nice stats for very cheap for the next five seasons. For one year of Vazquez and for the cost differential? You better believe it's not a no-brainer, especially if we can fill holes in the rotation well enough with one good free agent and one JJ trade.
  4. Meh, we'll just drop the Hardy/Escobar discussion. If I feel the need to read the "Custard's Last Stand" episode of JJ's loyal posse reaching to defend him amidst his final weeks in a Brewer uni, I'll head over to the MLB forum. I really like Baltimore as a trading option for JJ. I am in the minority but my liking really is Jeremy Guthrie. Here's a guy you control THROUGH 2012 and you are buying low. He's having a poor year after two very good years where he showed he was at least a #3 starter. He won't cost a lot either and is 30 years old, so he should still have his stuff for the next three years for us. This would be a very smart way to upgrade our rotation imho, and we might even be able get a sweetener too. But I know some want nothing to do with Guthrie. But Britton is not a bad alternative to target. In fact, I had wanted Guthrie and a solid "A" ball pitcher from Baltimore for Hardy, so this would work for me to a "tee".
  5. JJ Hardy had a .284 OBP in AAA in his time there. Alcides Escobar is at .306 OBP in MLB in his time here. Escobar gets on base more in MLB than Hardy does in AAA........and can at least jog a bit when he is on base. And is JJ's .651 that much more impressive OVER A FULL SEASON BASICALLY than Escobar's .644? Laughable. Good riddance JJ. Though I wish you all the best in the AL next year.
  6. I don't know. Obviously their big bopper in ManRam in long gone. But furthermore, Bay is up for free agency and might want to go back to the NL while Ortiz has sure struggled at least at times over the past year. I think Boston is lacking in a few areas as far as what they are missing to be an elite team again, but a dominant bat might be more needed by them this off-season than pitching.
  7. Shouldn't Hardy be the one to have to earn his way up? He was brutal in AAA and brutal in MLB all year.
  8. Bumgarner and Sanchez together in a deal for Prince peaks my interest. It's less players than we could get quantity wise, and less proven talent quality wise than we could probably get. But it does make sense and could have an enormous payoff for us. I think McGehee straight up for Vazquez would be to Atlanta's liking and what they'd ask for. I'd probably do it, but have some qualms about it. Probably means it'd be good for both teams.
  9. Isn't an Anderson for Hardy deal great buy-lows for both teams and gives us a great chance at getting a good 1B of the future that would arrive precisely when we needed him?
  10. Here is validation that we are pretty accurate on Fielder's value as opposed to our resident Sox fan with whom I certainly do enjoy reading his opinons on. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/09/olney-on-red-sox-fielder-cain.html If Boston would throw a huge package for 1.5 years of Halladay, they'd certainly throw the same package at the Giants for 2.5 years of Cain. So if anything, we should demand more than whatever was offered for Roy (in a round about way of speaking or in a value sense).
  11. I think Hardy is being over-valued, as with Anderson in the last two posts. Accordingly, both we be bought at their low in this exchange. A year ago, at their highs together, both sides likely would have said the same. This deal would make a ton of sense, but Doug will probably (rightfully maybe) get some starting help back in any JJ deal. I'd do it though.
  12. We could replace those two with DelCarmen and Anderson.
  13. And let me propose this in your thread and see what people think. Contingent on getting enough pitching in other ways and knowing Prince is likely gone in the next 1-2 years, would you trade JJ straight up for Lars Anderson?
  14. I expect a guthrie type starter along with a scarpetta type A ball pitching prospect if we are trading JJ by himself.
  15. I guess the five I'd demand are Bucholtz, Bard, Bowden, Elsberry, Anderson. If we need to sweeten one more guy along with Prince, I'd consider. I am not expecting as much for Hardy as some of you, so I'd even allow him to be the guy (or a prospect that likely has a major league future but that could be blocked).
  16. Tough to know. You bet it would hurt the lineup. But what if we hypothetically put Elbsberry, Weeks, and Anderson into the lineup next year and the lineup looks something like... Elsberry, Escobar, Braun, Anderson, Weeks, McGehee/Gamel, Hart, Salome, Pitcher You can move Anderson for maybe Casey or Corey or even put Braun there. Yeah, we lose big time at the cleanup spot but that's a pretty solid lineup. If you can get me Clay and Bowden as well, I am pretty tempted.
  17. Not sure. What about Bucholtz, Bowden, Anderson, and Elsburry for Fielder and Hardy? That'd be pretty nice, but maybe too much?
  18. Am I the only one that would rather have Bowden over Bard? Color me unexcited about relievers as key cogs in a blockbuster deal. Nothing against Bard. He might well be a future allstar. I just think we should get starters and more starters first and foremost in addition to Lars Anderson. Plus, I think Bard, of all the collection of prospects Boston could hypothetically send us, represents the most value of any of them for a Boston World Series run next season. So, by being willing to keep him out of the deal, we might get Boston to offer us that much more when all is said and done.
  19. I dunno. I tried not being a homer on this one and really think Atlanta would go for this. I really think they are in as dire of a need for bats as we are for GOOD starting pitching.
  20. Not sure I have his name correct, and please read this link from a Braves fan before responding. http://www.talkingchop.com/2009/9/11/1025718/braves-starting-pitchers-who-to Obviously they are not getting Braun for him, but it seems like they'd like a 3B man and you know they were after Hart. Does anyone think that Gamel and Hart for their version of JJ would be fair for both sides. I am assuming he's an arm most of you would LOVE to have...
  21. Good name to look at. I wonder if Toronto, being that they need to compete in the AL East, might be a darkhorse for a Fielder trade. I'd take Overbay back as a stopgap for a couple years and maybe spend our top pick on a slugging 1B. I'd certainly take Rzepcyzinski, Overbay, McGowan, plus off their hands. I know McGowan's been hurt, but I liked him when healthy and would risk it if the price were okay. What else would have to be added to a Fielder deal with Toronto and does anyone feel they could be a darkhorse to landing Prince? They certainly have pitching to offer.
  22. I think the key difference though is team vs. teams. ONE team will most likely buy high on McGehee. I may be wrong here, but I think ONE team will do that, and it's up to Doug to find that team. I do agree that most will want to see it over a longer period of time.
  23. Yep, probably Manny Parra straight up would be the cost. I'll even let you call it...heads or tails?
  24. It'd be great to get Guthrie and another pitcher for Hardy. I agree with others on selling high on McGehee as well. I think we are overloaded with IF options and need badly to get a good pitcher/prospect for him and start Gamel.
  25. I'll preface by saying 1) I realize the ship has sailed here in many people's views and some don't even want him back under any condition 2) Macha was not even ever his manager But, does anyone think we'd have a shot at Sheets if we wanted him if we sort of clean house this off-season. Not saying we even will. But do you think the animosity is more toward management in Sheets' opinion, or do you think he really just doesn't like Milwaukee, his teammates, etc.?
