  1. I don't think we can trade McGehee and have him turn out to be an all-star any more than we can trade Gamel and have him turn out to be an all-star. Hopefully, after next year, we can predict all-star status for one of the two and can sell high on the other. As someone critcial of DM for not selling high in the past, I fully realize I might be setting myself up to eat my words here. But I think we have to know we have an answer at third for the next 5-6 years in one of these two for sure before we move the other.
  2. I think you guys are right for the most part, but our situation in Milwaukee might be different than almost all the other trades similar to the ones we are thinking. For the record, I'd prefer to keep Escobar. But if we traded him because we liked our other pretty young SS (Hardy) and wanted him longterm, we'd be seeking MLB talent where most teams would maybe be seeking a prospect or two. I think we can get MLB talent for Escobar, but it might be a #3 type of starter for instance as opposed to a pitcher a year and a half away that projects as a #2 starter. Most teams, doing a trade like this, take the prospect every time. Our unique situation might have us take the MLB ready #3 starter.
  3. I think there are many of us that rely on the naked eye as well as more traditional stats when determining a player's value. What we see watching every brewer game this year, and whay the more traditional stats indicate, is that Cameron is a good defensive player and a decent bat. But a statement as ludicrous as that one when comparing Cameron is just going to fuel the same tireless debate. Let's just keep it to pitching in this thread, since we know some people are diehard Cameron and/or Hardy fans and not turn this thread into that same debate.
  4. Did Hardy play much triple A before jumping to the majors from AA? I know expectations might have been slightly different, but I think .500 was a realistic goal both this season and the season JJ came up as a rookie. Sorry to rain on those expecting playoffs this season's parade, but this pitching staff had very little chance of getting us over .500. So back to the first point, if Hardy could skip AAA, why is it not Melvin's fault for figuring out the SS picture before this season was completed?
  5. Sorry Casey. I have major issues with WAR and how it attempts to explain how much a player is worth. But I'll just stay out of this one the rest of the way. We all are on the same page in wanting the Crew to be a perennial winner, just different opinions on how best to go about getting there.
  6. Just out of curiosity, using WAR, how many million would I be worth this year if I played SS with average defense and a .220 stick?
  7. I don't know why people pencil Suppan into next year's rotation. Yes, we are paying him a billion dollars, but I can almost guarantee, in spite of that, that our five man rotation next year won't have him in it. He'll be the sixth starter and otherwise a longman for us in the final year of his pathetic contract.
  8. Yep, great move. It's going to make teams pay if they want JJ instead of basically forcing us to sell low on him.
  9. And he has more tools to play CF than Hall, who was not horrible in that role.
  10. Hey, Braun did nothing but warned Melvin. Get some pitching in here, cause we don't have much of it. Braun said this respectfully enough. Melvin didn't listen. Our pitching has been horendous since a few weeks before Braun spoke up. And here we sit several games below .500.
  11. We're not giving him a long term contract. That in itself will probably keep his numbers up. Bottom line is he's been basically a man among boys at the plate for us. Why people cringe at offering arbitration for the guy for one year is beyond me.
  12. Just came across this at rotoworld. I know it is different as they've yet to play in the majors, but it really is very similar to if we keep JJ down to keep control of him an extra year. "The A's have promoted first base prospect Chris Carter from Double-A Midland to Triple-A Sacramento." "The A's have already said they won't call up Carter when rosters expand, and the same goes for third base prospect Brett Wallace. Of course, it has nothing to do with their numbers. Carter eclipsed 100 RBI Tuesday night, an impressive feat at the Double-A level where they only play 140 games. " Once again, my position is that there is nothing wrong with keeping JJ down to control him through 2011.
  13. Put a fork in us. We are done for the year. And why would he want to come here when he could go back to the Dodgers or to St. Louis or to Colorado and pitch in the playoffs?
  14. Why would he be a bench player? He'd be pencile in for 500 ab's I am sure one way or another.
  15. How about Clay, Bowden, Bard and Lars Anderson for Prince?
  16. I think Lopez is better than some are giving him credit for. Yes he has a couple flaws like every other player. But he'll attract serious interest regardless of his status after the season.
  17. I think I'd rather take four of the others listed along with Buchholz and Bard for Prince and JJ.
  18. From Baker at the Seattle Times and also on mlbtraerumors the day after the trade deadline... Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times hears that the Red Sox gave the Mariners the chance to choose five of the following players in exchange for Felix Hernandez: Clay Buchholz Daniel Bard Justin Masterson Nick Hagadone Michael Bowden Felix Doubront Josh Reddick Yamaico Navarro The Mariners apparently turned down the deal. Like I said, I'll take our choice of six for Fielder and Hardy. How would thatt sound to people? Too much or not enough?
  19. I would take our pick of six of the names offered by Boston at the deadline for King Felix in a deal for Prince and Hardy.
  20. I am not sure I buy the word efficient whem it comes to scoring runs the way you guys are talking about them. Isn't the only way efficiency is really involved calculated via ... amount of plate appearances / amount of runs ???
  21. I am beginning to like the looks of Lopez leading off and Weeks batting 5th, if we can be sufficient in CF with one of the two.
  22. Well, if Lopez accepts arbitration, we'll likely have to pay him and Weeks enough money where one of them will be playing CF for us next year, so a lot of this Cameron talk about next year might be for naught.
  23. How come Counsell is allowed to suddenly be better but Patterson is not? Just playing devils advocate here. I don't really want to plan on CP to be on the team next year, but I also didn't want Counsell on this year's team after his showing the past two years here.
  24. I can think of greater tragedies than having Lopez accept arbitration.
  25. Well, many want to try and "sell high" on McGehee. I am sure Lopez could play all over the diamond and get his 400-500 AB's, especially if we start Gamel and Escobar next season. Lopez can play well enough at 3B and SS to get some time there, correct? I know we haven't seen it, as he's been the second baseman everyday.
