  1. I think lots of us think that there is a chance (far from a certainty) that the wave of Gamel, Escober, Salome, Green will be able to put up very nice numbers as well. So, if you can get value for a Fielder rather than giving him a 50-100 million dollar long term value, the future and present still will be bright.
  2. I think we either tread water for another year and hope Hall/Branyan/Dillon can improve or we speed up Gamel. If Gamel can't play third well enough, Green should be ready by 2010. I see no reason to go out and make a splash there in the offseason. We need to do the above (somewhat risky) but this is precisely the type of risk an organization like the Brewers needs to take to be a consistent playoff team.
  3. I think CC pinch hit to allow the fans to send him off and cheer for him one last time. There obviously were better pinch hit options, but I think the fans enjoyed him getting in the game.
  4. Gwynn should get a year to start and then trade him if Cain is ready. Even Gwynn-haters should be able to live with one year having him start when you consider we'll need the ten million for starting pitching.
  5. We will need Green at third or second. As I say in my other thread, we just need Cain and Gillespie to keep improving and we'll be just fine losing LaPorta and Brantley.
  6. Yep, I'd be tempted to do Cain/Winn for Hardy/Hart based on the way Hart has been hitting. I'd probably need a sweetener though and this would be contingent on feeling Escobar is really ready and the organizational feeling that Gillespie is going to be an above average corner OF'er. Might be too much to give up and selling too low on Hart, so I am retracting this hypothetical in my head.
  7. I highly dealt they'd want to give top talent to us or that we'd want to give top talent to them. Outside of a Mota type trade, there will be no match with NYM.
  8. I am implying that untouchable means "give us a very good offer if you want him." What's he supposed to say, "we'll trade Cain if we get a good package"? I see it as posturing, but I could be wrong.
  9. Just wondering what people want to do. Nelson has shown in limited pt that he's not overmatched at all at the majors and we can use a lefty bat. My only thinking in bringing this up is that DeFelice has been maybe a bigger help lately and I'm wondering if given our starting pitching deficiency, if it might be more beneficial to have an arm like DeFelice. It also seems like having the extra pitchers has really been soothing to our team moreso than having extra bench bats. Do you think there's a better chance DeFelice would come in handy or do you think Nelson will moreso?
  10. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi...2008/09/29/SPJ21385LL.DTL I thought about giving this it's own thread, but decided not to. Article first mentions that the Giants first and foremost want to upgrade their HR and RBI production and then the bullpen. However, they are going to make a push for CC and see if he wants to return to the Bay Area. The biggest things concering us out of the article are: 1) It appears they are not going to be seeking a 1Bman 2) Sabean does not think they need to trade Cain to get a big time run producer (basically calls him untouchable. It would appear to me that they'd be seeking Hardy + to move Cain. What plus is and what we'd agree to (if anything) I don't know.
  11. I'm not gung ho on the draft picks anyway. I'd much rather offer him arby and have him accept and deal with the uncertainty than offer him arby and have him sign elsewhere (with the decent chance that he pitches like the ace we will be without or overpaying for in prospects/players).
  12. Gorman Harvey - thank you much for you reply, exactly what I was looking for. Too Live Brew - Hart has been atrocious lately, and I can only hope you are wrong (not that your idea isn't the smart move based on Corey's recent play but more hoping that Corey actually starts hitting like he did pre-September).
  13. The question in a way becomes Cain vs. Brantley and Gillespie vs. (a poor man's) Laporta Can Cain play better defense at CF than Brantley? Can Cain steal bases as regularly as Brantley? Can Cain have a similar OBP to Brantley? Can Gillespie play a better corner outfield than LaPorta? Can Gillespie be a big run producer? Can Gillespie eclipse 25 home runs as a full time starter? Can Gillespie come close to LaPorta in slugging %. Many of these can't yet be answered and won't for several years. But I am encouraged and VERY optimistic about Cain and Gillespie.
  14. What's the rule on bringing guys and dressing them but not activating them? Is six the max? Is there a reason these guys were chosen over the likes of Escobar, Coffey, Lamb, Gamel, etc? Not complaining, just intersted on this subject as I don't know the rules or have a guess as to the rationale.
  15. Gallardo getting injured. If he doesn't get hurt, we likely don't need to get CC because we have a solid rotation and Doug would not have wanted to give up LaPorta. If this trade doesn't happen, I believe we don't quite make the wild card, as CC was that big of a difference maker. Now, you never want to say that good comes from a young player getting injured, but I truly believe we don't get CC without Gallardo going down.
  16. Wasn't there just something in the Cleveland Plain Dealer indicating that we preferred to give them Green but they preferred to get Brantley?
  17. With these two, we will be just fine in the OF, even after losing LaPorta and likely Brantley. Gillespie looks to me like someone that has been very underrated by us given how spoiled we've been with great prospects. I think he'll prove to be just fine as a starting corner outfielder for us. Cain has more potential than maybe anyone in our organization and really started to come on. He's my hope for CF for the future. CC was a great trade made better by the fact that, while giving up two great OF prospects, we have two others in the wings ready to be very productive big leaguers.
  18. Agent39 that posts here basically confirms it's one of his two clients (Brantley or Green).
  19. I'd happily go with Gwynn or make the controversial Hart to center move and save that 10mil if it meant we end up with CC long term.
  20. I'd almost guess we'd give them Lucroy. It's not going to be the popular choice here, but we seem to have enough catching and really need advanced prospects at 2B/3B (Green) and OF (Brantley, Cain). You gotta figure between Salome/Lawrie and some of the others playing well, we'll have one very good starting catcher and a capable reserve in the next couple/few years.
  21. Not a bad idea. I'd be more inclined to adding Giambi, though that's assuming we get a fair haul for Prince. Giambi would certainly be an able fill in for a year or two at first base.
  22. Anyone think Braun will be a good manager in about 15 years? It's so far away and a lot can happen, but he sure seems to "get it" at a young age.
