  1. I have a good feeling about Roenicke, long-term. He'll make some decisions which don't make sense, but overall I think he'll be a good manager. I like the fact that Nyjer Morgan is starting today, that is a good and fairly quick adjustment to realizing that Kotsay isn't looking good.
  2. Good to see Nyjer Morgan starting today, although Roenicke did say that Kotsay will start Tuesday because he "matches up well against Derek Lowe"
  3. well.... in general, I agree. Its a long season, alot can happen, we have alot of talent. etc etc. But also we can see the writing on the wall with some players: Kotsay has not been much for 3-4 years, Betancourt hasn't been much of a fielder yet in his career, Nieves is a horrible hitter. These guys aren't going to magically/mystically transform their game. And then there is Gomez, who we hope will magically/mystically transform his game but he sure looks like the same old Gomez Sure, our lineup should be much better when Hart & Lucroy return (plus Greinke!). But in the meantime, we could be digging a huge hole to climb out of. None of that is panic...
  4. Available now, or at the Trade Deadline? In terms of the Trade Deadline, Rafael Furcal is the first name that come to mind.
  5. Funny is one way to put it. Depressing might be another. Prince is, in my opinion, a pretty awful fielder. Our entire infield right now is not close to playoff caliber defensively. Weeks looks like by far our best fielding infielder, and that says it all.
  6. McGehee is what he is. Nothing special defensively but not horrible. He's a pretty good hitter. Personally I'd love to see better hitting out of a 3rd baseman and certainly better hitting out of the 5th spot in the batting order! He's certainly no David Wright. He's not even as good as Scott Rolen was last year with the bat (though I think Rolen is starting to show signs of slowing down) I agree that McGehee is down the list of problems that we have... He doesn't have anywhere near the power to be a credible 1B. We're pretty much stuck with him at 3B. I'd like him alot better if we had a powerful enough lineup where McGehee could bat 7th, but that is more a knock on our lineup than on Casey himself
  7. I think Hart is going to be out for at least a few more weeks if not longer and it'll be interesting to see how this whole Kotsay-Morgan thing plays out I'd like to believe that they traded for Morgan knowing that counting on Carlos Gomez and Mark Kotsay is a huge risk
  8. It's pretty clear that Kotsay is done as a MLB player. Maybe he can be a left-handed pinch-hitter off the bench or whatever. Part of the test of what we have in Ron Roenicke is seeing the adjustments he makes through the season. Eventually he will realize that Morgan is a far better option than Kotsay, but how quickly will he see that? It could also be easily argued that Morgan should start over Gomez vs the better right-handers. Again, how soon will Roenicke see this and react. And finally, please tell me that Nieves will not be kept over Kottaras once Lucroy comes back! the bottom 4 of Kotsay, Betancourt, Nieves , Pitcher is just a brutal lineup! Easily among the worst I've seen as a Brewers fan, and that is really saying something!
  9. Look at how the Reds fans were booing Coco Cordero tonight. You think he's not going to implode sometimes this season? Things have a way of balancing out over the course of the season... I'm more concerned with Wolf tommorow, he needs to avoid another slow start to a season ad come out dealing
  10. tough game but the optimist in me wants to point out that in the last few years a game like this would have been way out reach when our starter didn't have his best stuff and can only go 5 innings. Good pitching performances by Braddock, Mitre & Green kept us in this one and that bodes very well for the future
  11. So do you think Nieves will still be a Brewer when Lucroy gets back A .701 OPS when you bat .201 is very impressive. Kottaras had a higher OPS than Yadier Molina, Jose Molina, A.J. Pierzinski, and a bunch of other catchers last season
  12. Kottaras had a .701 OPS last year. In contrast, Nieves had a .554 OPS last year!!! They are at vastly different levels as hitters. Nieves has a career OPS in MLB of .574 ... that is brutal
  13. I'm very intrigued by this whole Kottaras-Nieves thing. Alot of folks here on Brewerfan.net insist that Kottaras will remain the backup catcher when Lucroy returns, but if that is the case, why isn't Kottaras getting a start in these first 2 games? (Kottaras will start tommorow, apparently).... Nieves is an impressive defensive catcher but historically Kottaras is a vastly better hitter than Nieves.... I suppose I could see sitting Kottaras versus a lefty... I'm concerned that Kottaras will be let go when Lucroy returns, which I think would be a real mistake
  14. I don't get it. Did he go into specifics on what it was about how his injury was handled that he didn't like? Or just that he didn't like how it was handled, period, and we are left to wonder about those specifics?...
  15. If you look at his splits, Morgan really should never start against lefties, unless its an emergency or he's the only option. Morgan hits well against right-handers, not so much against Lefties... I do love watching Ryan Braun bat against left-handers
  16. In Madison on Charter Cable it is listed as being on Extra Channel 87... fingers crossed and looking forward to it
  17. Really looking forward to watching this game (yes its listed on Extra channel 87 on Charter cable in the Madison area). Will be intrigued to see if Almonte gets the start
  18. it really depends alot on John Axford
  19. Nieves has a career OPS of .570 ... its pretty clear that Nieves is a better defensive catcher but wow his bat has been historically awful. And at 33 years of age its not like he's going to magically transform his hitting ability. Meanwhile many might point to Kottaras' .203 BA last season, but he still had an OPS of over .700 ... Kottaras is a significantly better hitter than Nieves I'd hate to lose Kottaras over a small sample of a week or two, or even based on spring training. Maybe they've just given up on Kottaras due to his defensive liabilities?
  20. http://www.jsonline.com/s...s/brewers/119038789.html Based on that article, Roenicke is either going to use an extremely small sample to determine who the backup catcher will be for 2011, or he already knows and just isn't saying. Maybe I'm reading way too much into Nieves starting on Opening Day, but the fact that Nieves not only started but had 2 hits and made a few plays behind the plate that I rarely see Kottaras make has me wondering about just how much longer Kottaras will be a Brewer Nieves will start Saturday with Kottaras going on Sunday
  21. If the Brewers go with Nieves when Lucroy comes back, what is the likelihood that Kottaras clears waivers and accepts an assignment to the minors? And, does that then mean that Rivera would be waived or sent to AA ball? It would appear that Roenicke might favor Nieves over Kottaras for the backup spot. And with a Lefty going for the Reds on Saturday, I would think Nieves will start that day, too
  22. Saito 50% of the time, with the other 50% of the time being "closer by commitee"... Saito can't pitch back to back days... Hopefully Axford will get it together
  23. Betancourt's best career season OBP was .310 back in 2006... there's plenty to be concerned with, with him, too
  24. Based on Kotsay's stats in the last few years and how slow he looked today as well as the very poor at-bats he took today, I'm not very optimistic about him, at all. On the plus side, a complete implosion from Kotsay over the next several games (such as going 0 for the next 5-6 games, which is entirely possible) could lead to Morgan getting alot more playing time
  25. Kotsay looked pretty awful at the plate, and looked very slow on the basepaths and in the outfield. To paraphrase Dennis Green: "he is what we thought he is..."
