  1. I think one of the things a Prince trade would tell Braun is: he better work harder on his defense, because pitching and defense are going to be at a premium in a post-Prince era if he is dealt for young pitching. To me, though, you absolutely must fire Doug Melvin before trading Prince. I shudder at the thought of whom Melvin would trade Prince for. 2 Jeff Suppan's circa 2006 and a Kevin Mench style first baseman are my first inclination. Even if you tell Melvin he must trade Prince only for young pitchers, I'm not confident as to his ability to judge pitching talent.
  2. I know RoCoBrewfan, however it is difficult to figure out when exactly baseball became fully integrated. It certainly wasn't in Jackie Robinson's first few seasons. Ted Williams was a remarkable hitter though, and I realize there are other factors that should be included, such as the higher pitching mound, day baseball every game, rougher travelling conditions, the stress of not making huge money etc
  3. The first thing I'd do is fire Doug Melvin and hire a GM who understands that pitching is the first priority. I trade Fielder for several young pitchers (to Boston perhaps for a similar package that was offered for Halladay), I get rid of expensive vets like Cameron, Suppan, Kendall, and Hoffman. I'd trade Hart and Hardy for more pitching. I'd look at 2010 as mostly a rebuilding year starting Gamel, Escobar and Salome/Lucroy every day and build for 2011 with more salary cap room to pick up important pieces for that season with Lawrie ready by 2011 along with the rebuilt pitching staff anchored by Gallardo with Parra in the mix. Prince could hit 70 HR's next year and with our current pitching staff it wouldn't make a hill of beans of a difference.
  4. you keep Mat Gamel. He becomes tradeable only if Prince is signed longterm which is highly unlikely
  5. my vote still goes to Albert Pujols. I think Pujols might be the greatest hitter of all-time, actually. Ted Williams played too much before integration to know how he would have done vs Satchel Paige et al. Willie Mays had a 10-12 year streak with similar stats as Pujols but not as great of a batting average Mauer might end up the greatest catcher of all-time though, and if you put him in a time machine back to Ruth and Gehrig's era and allowed him to face only white pitchers he'd probably hit .410 every year
  6. I do think Melvin should be fired but I don't think the Brewers window in the Braun era is closed. Especially if they trade Prince for pitching sooner rather than later. And get rid of the contracts of Suppan, Cameron, Kendall over the next few years (i.e. all the overpaid vets) and trade Hart and Hardy You regroup with a nucleus in 2011 of Braun, Gamel, Escobar, Lawrie, Cain, Gallardo, Parra and pitching attained through trades and you take your chances trying to win games by 3-2 or 4-3
  7. As we have seen repeatedly this season, it doesn't matter how strong the hitting is if you don't have enough pitching. As much as I like and admire Prince, I say trade him ASAP but only after replacing Doug Melvin. I don't want Melvin doing this trade. I'd much rather trade Prince, Hardy, and maybe even Hart for pitching and take our chances on trying to win 3-2 or 4-3 games as opposed to constantly (seemingly) needing to score 6 or 7 runs to win a game.
  8. a fairly disappointing trade. Lets hope theres some kind of side agreement for future considerations in another trade in the off-season. Doubtful
  9. Bud Selig deserves to be trashed. He treated the Brewers like a tax write off for a long long time.
  10. Alot of the criticism here is warranted, though I do think the Butler-Gross trade was great for the Brewers. Melvin should get alot of credit for the very club friendly long-term contract Ryan Braun signed. That was huge for the Brewers franchise.
  11. So, what does he have to do to start Saturday's game? Another 2 HR game on Friday? Or would one HR, or 2 for 4 with a double and 3 RBI's suffice?
  12. Kendall has some value as a back-up catcher. He's a better catcher than most of the back-ups in MLB. I would hope the Brewers could get something for him in a waiver wire trade, maybe a young pitcher coming off an injury who has a high ceiling or something...
  13. joepepsi - count me in as a big Earl Weaver fan. Besides his genius, he was extremely entertaining while arguing with umpires, too... He definitely did not play favorites with his players and demanded production.
  14. I'd like to see Don Money get serious consideration as the Brewers next manager
  15. Mathematically it is still possible but I don't see it happening. I'd like to see them greatly restrict Gallardo's pitch count soon and not overuse his young golden arm. Lets play Escobar and Gamel everyday and build towards next season
  16. Parra has improved as the season has gone on. Hoffman is improved over last season's stats. Todd Coffey stats this year are greatly improved over his previous career stats. I would argue that Stetter was improved but then got overused by Macha.
  17. he was safe on that play at the plate but I'll take it... of course, Escobar would have had that grounder and turned it into a double play!
  18. In my opinion Kendall is a vastly better defensive catcher than Rivera. And Yadier Molina is an equal amount better catcher than Kendall. We have a "slightly above average defensive catcher" in Kendall
  19. Tom H said "it sounds like Escobar will start 5 out of every 7 games" and that Melvin has instructed Macha to "run more" http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/52471947.html
  20. And I wonder how much of the blame for that the front office puts on Kendall? I see this as much of a promotion for Bosio, who they think highly of, as a demotion/firing of Castro. Bosio, whether or not he deserves it, is getting alot of credit for Parra turning things around. Many in MLB see Bosio as a potential future manager.
  21. Also, with a base stealer like Escobar, a guy who can easily score from first on any double and who can go to from first to third on many singles, I will be looking at OBP as a much more telling value of Escobar's worth than OPS
  22. Beyond one of the (good) questions as to whether Macha will let Escobar play every day (he should, perhaps sitting him occasionally vs the toughest right handers so Counsell can play), is whether Macha will actually let him run and steal bases. I think it is reasonable to assume that one of the messages being made today is that Macha is on the hot seat
  23. Jesus has one of the straightest fastballs in the Major Leagues. Carlos Lee might hurt someone sitting in the outfield stands by turning on one. That said, Jesus is better than Swindle
  24. I think Hardy can be traded for a Looper type pitcher, i.e. a #4 or #5 starting pitcher who can put up a 4.75 ERA and give you 30 starts a season, and he will be... Escobar is an upgrade over Hardy right now, and will be moreso next year...Hart will likely be kept for another year
  25. The tendinitis in the knee is something to watch. We're talking about a rookie who has trouble staying on the field. GM's will be wondering if this is going to be a recurrent situation, whether or not that is fair. I'll be shocked if Hardy isn't traded and I can see Hart going as well...
