  1. The words that scare me in Melvin's quotes are that he now has money to "spread around". With Melvin's track record that sounds like a bunch of Suppan/Johnny Estrada types Junk plus junk plus Prince Fielder plus Ryan Braun plus more junk plus exciting young players = lots of media hype and an 80 win season
  2. I agree that Melvin would have gotten a much higher return on Hardy if he had traded him last off-season. Thats my biggest knock on Melvin, he doesn't time things well with his own players on occasion (Hardy, Hall). Hindsight is 20/20 though
  3. Talked with my buddy who is a hardcore Twins fan. He's not happy about this trade at all. Thought the Twins could get alot more for Gomez. Says Gomez has tons of potential. Thinks JJ is a very streaky very overrated player...
  4. Statistical analysis doesn't work with Hardy because there are so many groundballs he doesn't get to that aren't called "errors". He also chases fly balls like a 50 year old. (Got a stat for that?)
  5. It is foolish that Pot is still illegal. This should be as newsworthy as "such and such player drinks beer"
  6. How many years do we have Carlos Gomez for now?
  7. With Olivo leaving KC, maybe we can trade Salome plus Hart to the Royals for pitching? By all accounts Lucroy has surpassed Salome at this point. Do the Royals have Oliva's replacement in place? I think the next move will be trading either Gamel + prospects or Hart + prospects for pitching and signing a free agent pitcher (probably Washburn). I don't see us signing a big ticket OF like Jason Bay or Matt Holiday, but given Melvin's penchant for over-estimating hitting vs pitching, it wouldn't shock me... If they are clearing lots of salary, I think its possible the Brewers try to put together a mega-deal extension for Prince Fielder
  8. I could see Gomez batting 9th with the pitcher 8th. Weeks still leading off. Escobar batting 7th. Gerut probably figures into playing CF in a loose platoon situation Eventually Escobar will be the lead-off guy and Weeks (if he can stay healthy that is) will be in a more natural position deeper in the lineup We know the Brewers will be getting at least 2 new starting pitchers. One likely a free agent (I'm still guessing Washburn). I like the idea of trading Hart plus prospects for pitching. Wondering who we might look at as a free agent corner outfielder?
  9. Gomez is absolutely not, in any way shape or form, a downgrade defensively from Cameron. Lets get that notion out of the way.
  10. "Carlos brings to our club great speed, athleticism and energy at a position that we needed to fill," said Melvin. "His defense will serve as a key component to us improving our pitching. At only 24 years of age, Carlos can further develop the offensive aspect of his game and give us a different look to our lineup." He is a fantastic defensive outfielder. He had a .997 fielding percentage as a full-time starter in '08. Once considered the top prospect in the Mets system, part of the Johan Santana trade. This is no Tony Gwynn Jr here... That said, I'm shocked we couldn't get more for Hardy. Evidently either we Brewers fans greatly over-value JJ Hardy or Doug Melvin is over-the-hill.
  11. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gomezca01.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=gomez-003car Stole 64 bases as a 19 year old in A ball... at least his .339 career minor league OBP speaks to potential...
  12. On the plus side Gomez is a great fielder and is one of the fastest players in MLB. He's only 24 years old. Problem is he walks only occasionally. His OBP is terrible. We're talking Johnny Estrada type OBP
  13. Hardy traded for a CF with a .638 career MLB OPS? Granted Gomez is fast and young, but there's Doug Melvin for you.... there wasn't a single pitcher in MLB that Melvin could trade Hardy for? If this means that Melvin will be using Cameron's money to spend on pitching, I suppose that is a good thing... Gomez, Escobar and Weeks makes for a faster Brewers lineup, but will Macha actually let them run?
  14. I think Gamel packaged with Hardy or Hart could get us a very highly sought after young pitcher like Clay Buchholz... as much as I like Gamel, we need pitching more than we need a great hitting 3rd baseman. We need serious upgrades in pitching, and that will cost good young prospects like Gamel or Lawrie, otherwise we'll consistently be a team that scores alot of runs and wins 80 to 85 games
  15. I agree in keeping Casey and agree that his "worth" is that the Crew can trade Gamel for pitching now. I'm not sure how much Gamel's down season hurt his trade value. A player with that kind of potential and under contract for as long as he is, has value... Another reason to get excited about Casey is that he did what he did in '09 playing hurt. i.e. its reasonable to assume that he can play even better, especially on defense
  16. I very much agree about Alcides Escobar, I think he has superstar potential, and we all know Rickie Weeks' potential (if Rickie can just stay healthy) Disagree about being just "2 solid pitchers from going all the way" though. We need more 2 great pitchers to go all the way, at least. (I do think Gallardo could develop into greatness, and it is conceivable that Parra could develop into the 3.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP guy we'd need as a #2 or preferably #3)... pitching wins championships
  17. I will boo him, most definitely
  18. Fault. Theres an interesting word. If it isn't Mark A's fault then it is Doug Melvin's How much of the payroll in the 2008 season was tied up in Suppan, Hall, Gagne? Those are poor decisions. Cameron's contract is another issue although that one is arguable (I still say that $$$ is better spent on pitching) The Brewers payroll isn't that much smaller than the Cardinals. The Cardinals are (arguably) in a better position going forward and have a title in this last decade as opposed to Milwaukee because (imho) they a) signed a better manager b) developed pitching better c) got better luck with said pitchers in regards to injuries None of those reasons are related to "oh whoa is me we don't have enough money", they are related (again imho) to a GM making decisions that reflect an ability to take a team from one of the worst teams in MLB to a 85 game winner, not a team that can compete for a World Series title Having said all that, despite my distrust of Doug Melvin, he really did have us poised to go far in 2008. Again a pitching staff of Sheets, Sabathia, Gallardo, Bush is plenty good enough to win a World Series if all 4 are healthy and pitching well.... no reason why that can't happen again, yes in Milwaukee, with the right personnel decisions Now just imagine that the Suppan, Hall, and Gagne $$$ had been spent shrewdly on great contributing players. Its those types of decisions (and yes, luck) that make a difference in who wins a 5 and 7 game series in October
  19. How much do you think he can realistically spend? This market can't support even a $110 million payroll. Probably not even a $100 million payroll.I'm not a math expert but the more he spends the more the Brewers will consistently win, and history shows people in Wisconsin go crazy for a winner. A perennial World Series contending Brewers team could conceivably sell out every game at Miller Park. Merch sales would be through the roof, as would the TV contract... Part of it is being smart with how you spend the money: you don't give $10 million a year contracts to over-the-hill starting pitchers or center-fielders or third basemen with a one year track record of hitting... there I just saved, what? $25-$30 million right there that could have been spent on Sabathia
  20. When Mark A spends the money. Last year's (2008) Brew Crew could have gone further into the post-season with a few breaks (Sheets staying healthy, C.C pitching like the '09 post-season version as opposed to how he did pitch in the playoffs)... it can happen... really Sheets/CC/Yo/Bush all fully healthy in '08 could have gone far
  21. I think Melvin should have already been fired, but yes I agree 100%. I am not convinced in the slightest that Melvin has a clue how to build a talented pitching staff, but will be thrilled to be proven wrong
  22. I think I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than watch Milton Bradley in a Brewers uniform
  23. I have to say, I think the NFL is a poor analogy. imho the NFL has gotten extremely mediocre in recent years. There may be parity and most teams have a chance to win it but the overall quality of the product has gone downhill bigtime... This Yankees-Phillies matchup is very entertaining to me, 2 truely great teams filled with superstars. As a baseball fan, I've fully enjoyed this post-season. If you must do an NFL analogy, this Yankees-Phillies matchup reminds me of the classic Cowboys-49ers games pre-salary cap, i.e. 2 truely great teams going at it. There are no longer great NFL teams, just ones who are a little better than mediocre.
  24. I'm not saying the Brewers will get a hometown discount if they show the ability to put together a true contender, I'm saying the Brewers won't be under any consideration at any amount of money if they don't put together a true title contender. Neither will any other MLB team that can't put together a title contending roster. i.e., it is not just about $$$ with Prince. Yes, the money has gotta be there, but he wants to win it all...
