  1. The reason you move Hardy is because Escobar is a better defensive player than Hardy. And brings much needed speed to the lineup. With Hardy at 3B the Brewers would the very best fielding left side of the infield in MLB... Then again, considering Hardy's bat this season, he doesn't deserve to startt, but that another issue, whether you believe he'll return to the offensive production of '08 and the 2nd half of '07. When Weeks got hurt, if Hardy had moved to 3B and they brought up Alcides with Casey and Counsell playing 2B, they wouldn't have had to trade for Lopez. Those chips used to trade for Lopez could have perhaps brought in some bullpen help... it is a domino effect
  2. If Alex Rodriquez can switch positions, so can JJ. This is all about $$$, and is short-sighted at that. Its not as if all the GM's in MLB are going to suddenly forget that JJ is an above-average fielding SS. Players that aren't "team-first", especially players that are hitting .230 and run like a 35 year old catcher, should not be part of the Brewers' long term plans.
  3. Jenkins is a team player and he hustled and played hurt and was a good team leader. I'm very happy for him that he got his ring. I agree with AJAY though, he's (probably) done. Maybe he could be a platoon guy, but at this point in the season it would take him too long to get into playing shape.
  4. I think Melvin's comment of "some fans would have been disappointed" is in reference to JJ Hardy. I can't wait till the Brewers trade Mr "I won't switch positions", super slow running, inconsistent hitting, limited range Hardy,. (Yes I understand alot of Brewers fans love him). I hope he has a phenomenal final 2 months of the season to up his trade value. My fear is he once again gets hurt and we only get a #4 or #5 pitcher for him
  5. Burns pitched well tonight. The defense let him down a little. If we didn't have the world's slowest shortstop chasing pop flies like a Grandma he probably would have only given up 2 runs.
  6. OK, so here's what I don't understand (maybe I'm missing something). Villanueva starts tommorow, and likely will go only 4-5 innings at best, and then who picks up the rest of the innings? Our already used up bullpen? I thought that was part of the appeal of Dillard, that he was stretched out and could go multiple innings when (not if, when) needed... Personally I would have sent Swindle back. We currently have nobody on the MLB roster who can go long relief, do we?
  7. The fact that Hall has over 200 plate appearances this season already is disturbing and a little astonishing. Even in his 35 HR year of 2006 his OBP was only .345 with a .899 OPS. He's never been phenomenal. He does have a .971 career OPS vs the Reds though. We'll see if he gets a start in Cincy this weekend
  8. I like Pierre OK, although dadofandrew is right about his extremely weak arm. I doubt the Dodgers would trade him this season, they are looking at making a run for the World Series and (all puns intended) Pierre off the bench as a pinch-runner and a late defensive backup and a pinch hitter fits the Joe Torre mold well
  9. I enjoyed the game. It was about (mostly) great pitching
  10. The fact that he'll likely only remain a Brewer through 2011 will be what forces Melvin's hand next year and in 2011 to "win now"
  11. Goofballs like that make me prefer to watch the Brewers on TV. Seriously
  12. Somehow I don't think David Wright feels threatened
  13. Good luck to Manny. I much prefer this solution that giving up the farm in a trade...
  14. I wouldn't trade Prince. I'd keep him for 2010 and 2011 and try to make a run in that window
  15. I would add: I think the future is bright for 2010-2011: we will either have Prince Fielder or be able to get a lot in trade for him. Trading Hardy in the off-season will bring in more talent. Lawrie will likely be in MLB by 2011. Braun-Lawrie-Escobar-Gamel plus Gallardo and pitchers brought in, in trades for Prince-Hardy-maybe Weeks is a strong nucleus.
  16. No way do I trade Escobar, I think he's going to be one of MLB's best SS's.
  17. a few years ago, would you have traded Gallardo for a SS with a .230 BA and a history of injuries? No way does Boston go for that... and I doubt Hardy will heat up enough to make his end of season stats respectable.
  18. Not yet convinced Mighty Casey is a legit starter long-term, we'll see if he's really a .300 hitter as time goes by. At the least he'd be a great supersub/utility guy for several years. Escobar is the lead-off guy with speed we need, which will enable Weeks to hit in a more natural spot for him next season (5th or 6th) and we gotta pray Weeks stays healthy next season. Hardy will be traded for pitching, hopefully in the off-season as he'll bring more then. Gamel is the 3B for years to come unless Melvin is stupid enough to trade him... I'm not convinced this year's Brewers can truely contend for a World Series championship this season without trading away most of their best prospects for Halladay, Vasquez and Dunn (i.e. they need 2 pitchers and a power bat) and I would not advocate mortgaging the future like that for one chance at a title, when we have superb talent in the minors coming up that can help us remain contenders for 5-6 years (through Braun's contract)
  19. Hopefully this will simmer down. Is Braun going to become MLB's version of Chad Johnson? Are we going to be calling him "Ryan Ocho" soon? Likely not... but if this continues (Braun vs Melvin in the media) it does not bode well for Melvin's longevity as GM. All-Star player signed long-term generally wins out over the GM that the owner inherited. The irony here is that Braun sounds like he wants to trade away the future that he very much is going to be a part of.
  20. Weeks in CF? I don't think Weeks should be counted on for much, given his injury history. Anything you get out of Weeks is pure bonus (granted he's exceptionally talented, and one of my favorite Brewers because of his work ethic and hustle)
  21. You cannot gamble away the future of the Brewers (Escobar-Gamel-Lawrie) for any one pitcher because any one pitcher is not going to make the Brewers a contender for a World Series championship. I mean, seriously, is our goal just to make the playoffs or to win it all? With streaky hitters like Hart-Hardy-Cameron and the apparent demise of Bill Hall, this Brewers team looks like it would have to have lights out pitching to win it all. I mean really, does adding Vasquez, with this current lineup (minus possibly Gamel) make you think we're going to the World Series? If you want to win now you go the Marlins route and you trade away Gamel-Escobar-Lawrie plus some young pitching and you get Vasquez and Harden or Halladay. And then you have one of the worst teams in baseball in 2011. You simply cannot trade Escobar, because Hardy will be a free agent soon enough and imho not at all worth signing longterm, considering his streakiness and (in my opinion) his lack of durability likely becoming an issue in coming years. Plus Escobar is a better fielder and faster and because of his youth you have him for 5-6 years at least. If we absolutely must trade for one pitcher to appease fans and keep our hopes up, maybe limp into the playoffs and then say "anything can happen in a 5 or 7 game series" and hope that the stars align and all our streaky hitters get hot at once, then deal Hardy and/or Hart, not our future...
  22. I think the real window we have is the length of Prince Fielder's stay in Milwaukee, at least in terms of the immediate future. Players like him don't come around very often I wonder what we could get in trade for Ryan Braun? Probably an incredible haul considering his contract and ability. And no, I am not putting this in Blue.
  23. I'm looking forward to the next time Gallardo pitches vs the Phillies. Lilly made it because he's a lefty, which they needed. Wondering how they are gonna handle 4 first basemen. Prince is the 2nd best hitter this year in the NL and deserves to play more than just one pinch hitting appearance. Can Gonzalez play another position? I know Pujols can play 2B
  24. Braun is definitely NOT old school, speaking out like that. Kind of a strange thing to say shorty after Suppan pitched incredibly well, however I understand where he's coming from. Braun is putting in another of his 30+ HR, 115 RBI's, .320 batting average seasons. With his level of talent, if he developed more plate discipline and stopped swinging so much at balls out of the zone, he could likely improve on those numbers. As great as he is, someone like him who is as young as he is, and who (in my opinion) isn't yet living up to his full potential probably shouldn't be calling out teammates in the press. That just ain't cool. Discuss it behind closed doors.
  25. I'm sitting here crying about Gamel not playing. Counsell gets a rally started, Casey gets 2 RBI's, Hardy homers. hmmmmm: Macha 1, Arm-Chair GM 0
