  1. In 83 plate appearances I'm not too worried about a line of .238/.265/.363/.628. The only thing that really jumps out to me is 3 BB for 14 K.
  2. I'm hoping we see a closer by committee as well. If a couple big lefties are coming up, throw in Braddock. Otherwise, let Axford and Villanueva handle it.
  3. If history serves, this is the one the Brewers pull out. No Hoffman, a pitching match-up that seems to clearly favor the Pirates, a near empty bench, and fan optimism is at an all-time low. I'd bet the club is something like .600 in games like these in the past three years (what, like 6 for 10 under all those conditions?). I like those odds!
  4. It's funny, I knew just from watching that the BB/9 numbers were brutal, and figured the K/BB numbers were only salvaged by their high strike-out ratios. Without looking though, I actually had no clue the Brewers have given up 1.30 HR/9 this year, I guess the walks have drawn away my attention (or maybe it just feels like a marked improvement over last year's (1.5?) HR/9 rate).
  5. Quite a few if we trade him for a player that will help us win. People will not show up for a losing team whether Fielder is here or not.I don't think it will affect the die-hard fans. There definitely will be some fans that revert to the old line of thinking that the Brewers just can't afford any star players and will never be a contender, even though that line of thinking obviously isn't justified in the least (Braun, Gallardo).
  6. I don't know. The Brewers have come a long way to build up the TV ratings and ticket sales they have today. I'd be willing to bet a lot more fans jump ship if the Brewers finish a disastrous 60-102 than if they somehow play great ball from here on out and win 80 games. Ticket sales are driven by many things, and past performance is definitely one of the stronger determinants of ticket sales. Seeing all these teams repeatedly "overspend" on closers makes me think us fans might be missing the mark. I just wonder how much fans value a closer, even if the closer isn't truly that valuable in terms of wins. Personally, if I didn't think it would be a bad move revenue wise, I'd like to see this team blown up, with Fielder being sent away at the deadline if the right deal comes along. I just wonder how many fans will decide not to go through the turnstiles next year if Prince isn't around.
  7. I think I can see Prince Fielder going on the DL tomorrow with a broken hand. I really wonder if Macha will be around tomorrow morning. I'd say 3% chance he's fired tomorrow, 10% chance by the end of next week, 25% chance by mid-June.
  8. Escobar cutting it way too close at third there...I don't think that's a smart play with two outs and McGehee coming up.
  9. Does it matter? It's not like we're going anywhere this year. I'd rather get as many young guys as possible on the team to see what they can do and what their future roles with the team could be.From an ownership standpoint, I think it would be a terrible idea to go on a fire sale, even if guys like Bush and DD aren't huge assets at this point. The bottom line is that Mark A. needs fans to go through the turnstiles and to turn into games, and throwing in the white flag at this point in the season, although it might be a winning percentage maximizing decision, would probably not be a profit maximizing decision.
  10. I agree with a lot of what you said, but I don't think people realize what kind of a rotation we would have if DD and Bush were DFA'd. Without those two, we're looking at Gallardo Wolf Narveson Parra Estrada 6) Kameron Loe 7) Chris Capuano? I could see the argument for having one or both of them sent to the pen, especially if Parra and Estrada throw the ball well. I just hope we have learned from last year that it isn't that easy to find a competent pitcher off the waiver wire.
  11. If Hoffman voluntarily retires doesn't he forfeit his salary for the rest of the year? That, along with the amount of pride on he line, tells me he'll be taking trip to the disabled list sooner than later. Even I don't want to see Hoffman go out like that. Hopefully he goes on a rehab assignment, comes back and pitches decently in a mop-up or 7th inning role.
  12. Yeah, but the defense wasn't bad in 2008 or 2009. I think it can explain Davis to a certain extent this year, but Braden Looper, Jeff Suppan, and Eric Gagne were certainly not victims of bad defense behind them. I really don't know what to make of Manny Parra and his seemingly absurd BABIP. I guess we can beat this whole "Parra sucks, he gets hit hard" vs. "He's just a victim of bad defense and bad luck on BABIP" into death, but the only thing that's going to change any of our minds is Manny taking the mound.
  13. I think Capuano's performance tonight was bump-worthy, given the depressing state of the major league forum. Cappy took the loss while going 6 1/3, striking out seven while walking none. He gave up 3 runs on 10 hits; 8 singles and 2 doubles.
  14. No, because they would have signed the right players in the first place. Besides, after DFA'ing every player there would be plenty of cheap, available productive players waiting to sign a $400K deal and contribute to a big league club.
  15. Gerut is probably better than average compared to reserve outfielders in the majors right now. He swings a weak, but not pathetic, stick, and he can play all three outfield positions competently, if not slightly better than average. It just sucks that Gomez and Edmonds both went down at the same time. I really wonder what Joe Inglett can do though. With a career line of .295/.350/.402/.752, he shouldn't make a half bad reserve outfielder if his defense is decent.
  16. If you look into it, ERA is a much worse predictor of future ERA than is a linear combination of HR/9, SO/9, and BB/9. So much of ERA is dependent on the play behind a pitcher; with a weak defense, ERA will be hugely inflated. I'm worried about Davis as well, but he really hasn't pitched that differently this year than he did in former years.
  17. Gagne got $10,000,000, Torres $3,333,333, and Hoffman $6,000,000 for last year. He'll get $8,000,000 this year (assuming the option is declined and none of the incentives vest). That's a total of $26,333,333 spent on "closers" by Melvin over the last three years, while Coco has made $33, and is on schedule to make another $13 next year. The bottom line is that spending on Gagne and Hoffman (the second time, perhaps the first) was dumb. Spending on Cordero was dumb. Spending on Francisco Rodriguez was dumb. Spending on Brian Fuentes was dumb. I really hope Braddock is given a chance to close games, because saving $8MM on closing pitching per year would be great for the Brewers.
  18. Wow, way to hit the nail on the head with the piggyback call. I'd go ahead and plan on doing pretty much the same thing on Sunday. Let Marco start the game, give him 5 innings, and let Parra finish out the last four. If Marco (I refuse to call him Estrada from this point on) struggles, Parra can pick up another couple innings. I really liked what I saw out of Estrada today. I had thought he was a typical 88-89 FB type guy with mediocre off-speed stuff. His fastball looked solid, consistently flashing 92-93 on the gun, and he located it reasonably well. His off-speed stuff looked quite good as well, as he located it reasonably well.
  19. When a player gets this lit up in 13 innings, I'm comfortable with going off those 13 innings and saying he is absolutely toast (heck, with they way Hoffman's been throwing the ball, 8-9 innings might have been enough). Is he a 15 ERA pitcher at this point? Of course not. Is he a 5.5-6 ERA pitcher at this point? Perhaps. Although I'm sure its happened, I don't ever recall a Brewers pitcher giving up 7 HR's in such a limited amount of innings. Please, don't make me look like an ignoramus and tell me that Looper did it last year, or Suppan the year before. There's a guy named Zach Braddock in AAA right now, although I'm not sure you guys have heard of him. Anyways, in 15 innings, he's struck out 27, walked 8, and given up one long ball. I wonder if he might be able to help this bullpen (hint, hint)?
  20. I'll go ahead and say that today very well could be Hoffman's last save opportunity. Seven longballs in 13 innings is just astonishing...I know he can't be this bad all of a sudden, but can he?
  21. I don't see anyone I'd give a call from the minors to play DH, but perhaps they could shift McGehee over to first, bring Counsell in at third, and let Prince DH. Whoever it is, I'm sure he will be a better choice than Tony Gwynn Jr.
  22. Not a great outing by Manny but he got the job done. If Estrada can come in for a solid 3 innings this should be a decent day off for the pen.
  23. It's definitely a concern. With a guy like Yovani, I tend to tolerate it just because he's been so good in his limited innings this year. However, I do wonder if he would be better off just giving up more contact in order to go 7-8 consistently. As for comments about the defense, I doubt pitchers are afraid of contact because of the defense. I didn't expect the defense to be this bad, and maybe they aren't this bad, but it has been a bit painful to watch. Hopefully as Escobar continues to develop and Gomez comes off the DL the defense will be better.
  24. That's a little too crazy for me, but an interesting idea nonetheless. What I'd do is just use Suppan as the true long reliever. Put him in any time the Brewers' starter goes less than 5 IP and the Crew is down by 5 or more runs, and let him throw 100 pitches, no matter how ugly it gets.
