  1. That curve looks scary good. I'm not usually one to buy into the hype of a rookie ballplayer, but I think this guy can be really special.
  2. He looked pretty nasty, even got squeezed on that curve ball low in the zone to Neil Walker.
  3. I really can't stand Gomez in the 2 hole or Kottaras in the 8 hole, even against a lefty. In the minors, Kottaras put up these splits: vs. R: .261/.361/.449/.810 (1099 AB's) vs. L: .265/.353/.408/.761 (431 AB's) In the majors, vs. R: .229/.326/.438/.764 (144 PA's) vs. L: .216/.423/.405/.828 (52 PA's) Of course I don't expect him to put up a reverse platoon split, but I'd still like to see him a little higher in the order.
  4. I think GM's often take out insurance policies against injuries on a lot of their signings, although I'm not sure about Melvin. That would apply to Riske as well, I'd think. We can criticize the Hawkins signing all we want, but I still think it's a mile ahead of the Riske signing. In three years before Riske came here, he posted 6.2 K/9, 2.8 BB/9, and 1.2 HR/9 with about a 40% fly ball rate. In three years before Hawkins came here, he posted 6.1 K/9, 2.7 BB/9, 0.8 HR/9 with about a 30% fly ball rate. Both were bad signings, but Hawkins is (and was at the sign of signing) a significantly better pitcher than Riske. Despite being overpaid, Hawkins is a solid reliever and it's really too bad that he'll be out this long.
  5. Let's hope Doug can get this guy signed. Looking at TH's post, that's an ugly history of 1st round high school pitchers signing with the Crew, so here's hoping he bucks the trend.
  6. I think it makes more sense to look at these in how much they paid in addition to their market value. Hammonds' production was probably worth somewhere around $0.25M while Suppan's was worth something more like -$3.5M. By that total, I've got Suppan costing the Brewers $45.5M in excess of his value and Hammond costing them $19.95M in excess of his value, although that number would be closer to Suppan's if it were adjusted for inflation. I'll just leave it at yeah, they both really really sucked, although luckily I was only in 7th grade when Hammonds was signed so I don't really remember how awful he was.
  7. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/95784914.html Looks like Smith. "To replace Suppan on their roster, the Brewers are purchasing the contract of reliever Chris Smith from Class AAA Nashville. Smith was the closer for the Sounds, and was 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA with 16 saves."

  9. Narveson - right now - is pitching like a LH version of Dave Bush. Same horrible WHIP, similar GB/FB ratios, etc. Bush has the 'benefit' of having given up more unearned runs, which is why his ERA is nearly a run lower than Narveson. About the only thing Narveson has going for him is that he racks up more strikeouts and throws more pitches per start than Bush does. That said, due to his inability to keep his pitch count down (19! pitches / inning), he still can't average 6 innings /start. While Bush's per-start numbers are skewed heavily by the meltdown at Target Field last month, he's still been the more constistent guy, putting up 6 quality starts in 11 chances (compared to 2 QS in 8 GS for Narveson). That isn't the type of performnce I would look to commit to. K/9: Narveson: 8.00, Bush: 4.81BB/9: Narveson: 4.33, Bush: 4.50 K/BB: Narveson: 1.85, Bush: 1.07 xFIP: Narveson: 4.54, Bush: 5.37 If you compare the two pitchers based on WHIP, ER, and QS, then they look pretty similar. If you use statistics that are much better indicators of future performance, it's pretty clear that Narveson projects to be a much better starter than Bush, even if he only projects as a #5 starter.
  10. If Bush gets the start on Thursday, it will be a facepalm moment. If this team is thinking about the future, which I hope they are, it's time to commit to Gallardo, Wolf, Narveson, and Parra in the rotation for a decent chunk of time. Bush isn't going to be around next year; if he can't provide value to the club in this season, there's no reason to have him in the rotation. If (and this is a big if) Parra can finally figure it out, the club's rotation will not look nearly as dire for the future: Gallardo (2014/2015) Wolf (2012/2013) Parra (2013) Narveson (2015?) ??? That's not the making of an elite rotation, but if Parra becomes a dependable pitcher, it's a heck of a lot better than what they've been throwing out there lately. Narveson looks like a dependable 5th starter at this point, and that's okay so long as he is actually the fifth starter.
  11. Parra really got squeezed on that AB. Pitches 1, 3, and 5 were in the strike zone.
  12. That reminds me of the time Sheets struck out three straight on 9 pitches and then the (Astros?) pitcher (Oswalt?) struck out four in an inning later in the game. Nice work by Manny.
  13. Wallace went to Toronto for Michael Taylor this summer.Mortensen might be nearly MLB ready, but I don't think his ceiling is much higher than a bottom of the rotation starter, although I could be wrong, as I'm not terribly familiar with him. Don't know anything about Peterson, but his numbers look decent for his age. That seemed like a pretty good haul for Holliday at the time, but my main worry is getting top-end pitching. If they could get a near-MLB pitcher with a ceiling of a 2nd and 3rd starter, a raw toolsy pitcher, and a lower end hitting prospect, I'd be happy. I just don't have a very good idea of what teams will be willing to give up for a guy who is due $11MM this year and likely around $15MM next year. edit: typo

  15. Could someone post some links to articles that indicate Mark A. is behind any of these moves? Of course Mark A. wouldn't want people to know he had been tinkering, but you'd think some credible source would find out eventually. I'm not trying to be condescending, but I just haven't seen much credible evidence of Attanasio calling the shots, outside of Suppan, and even that's pretty hazy.
  16. I think it really has to do more with the Prince Fielder fight. We all know how tender little Manny Parra is, and Prince really hurt his feelings. Before the fight: 151.1 IP, 69 ER, 4.10 ERA After the fight: 212 IP, 136 ER, 5.77 ERA The only logical explanation is that Prince Fielder has caused the downfall of Manny Parra. Prince must be DFA'd for his crimes, or else his presence will prevent Manny from ever achieving success.
  17. Not to mention saying the Cardinals should do a suicide squeeze with two outs. That second strike to Braun was at least 3" low.
  18. That was an incredibly classy way to watch a home run. I think I saw a tear drop from Albert's eye, as he hit that ball to a seven year old handicapped cancer patient with two parents fighting in Afghanistan.
  19. I'd much rather see Kottaras 2nd and Counsell 8th, but at this point I'm just looking for reasons to pick on Macha.
  20. Kottaras hitting 8th? I guess that can't hurt his absurd BB%. [/blue] Perhaps that's all Macha cares about. [/blue]
