  1. Don't guys like Mike Burns, Chase Wright, and Nick Green basically fit the definition for replacement level?
  2. The real McGehee is probably a .340/.440/.780 hitter, I may be overvaluing his strong 2009 though, given his minor league numbers. He probably is a competent fielder when healthy, so he is most definitely an asset at his price if he can just get around 350-400 PA a year playing utility.
  3. Looper and Fielder both continue their quests for 40 HR's. I have a feeling the former will reach the mark first.
  4. What a surprise. I'd assume he doesn't realize that corner outfielders who are able to swing a decent bat are not valuable if they are both crippled and butchers in the field. Mr. Sheffield: You are old, and you are no longer good at baseball. Please quit now.
  5. I'm still listening to Ueck just about every game. I guess that could just be because I just have too much time on my hands, but I'm also listening for next year. I mean, I'm cheering every Lopez double for that comp pick, etc. Oh, and I'm still thoroughly enjoying watching Soriano and co fall further out of the playoff hunt.
  6. Eh, I've got nothing better to do. Here's what I've got, to start the year: 2B: Weeks RF: Hart LF: Braun 1B: Fielder 3B: Gamel CF: Cameron SS: Escobar C: Rivera/Salome P: Gallardo OF: Catalanatto OF: Bourgeoiuoueous UTIL: McGehee UTIL: Counsell C: Salome/Rivera SP: Gallardo SP: Parra SP: Hardy Package (Hardy, top 10 prospect for a competent starter) SP: Bush SP: Suppan CL: Coffey SU: Dotel LOOGY: Stetter ROOGY: Difelice Long: Burns BP: Villanueva BP: Colome BP: McClung IF Hardy can regain some value and net a legit #3/4, the staff should be acceptable, as long as some solid AAA arms are picked up. I figure Dotel could be picked up for 2yr/7MM, otherwise just find some other comparable reliever to fill that role. I'd like to see Salome given a chance, with Lucroy starting at AAA next year. If Salome can't cut it, Lucroy could be brought to the bigs by the all star break. Well, this team would probably make the playoffs if just about every single player has a career year. I guess that's better than the Royals at least.
  7. Seriously, is Macha trying to break Gallardo? This is getting ridiculous. Are you watching this Melvin?
  8. I'm not really sure how I feel about slotting the signing bonuses, but the international draft is long overdue. Being a hockey fan, I can't even imagine how absurd it would be if they had international free agency along with no salary cap. Ovechkin, Malkin, et. al would all be Red Wings (yes, I know it's different since hockey players develop at such age).
  9. If there were a better deal on the market, Melvin would have taken it. The bottom line is that Hall is a replacement level player at this point, so even getting salary relief around 1.5 million should be a pretty big win.
  10. They are if they can draw 15,000,000 fans next year. I wonder if the park will even fill up?
  11. If Joe Mauer really is a +10 catcher, then I'd argue that this year he has been the best player in baseball. In the future though, I just don't expect Mauer to maintain his .450/.650/.1100 line, while Pujols has shown the ability to consistently hit like that. He may well be the second best position player in the game (cue the Longoria debate), but I've got to say Pujols still trumps him, in my opinion. Note: I just looked on Fangraphs, and Nyjer Morgan has a UZR of 28.7! I don't want to turn this into a UZR argument, but that's ridiculous.
  12. I've got to go with the Mets. Granted, they were obviously a highly injury prone team, but they have really been hammered. I guess the same goes for the Cubs, even with the injuries that could be expected from that roster I would have still predicted 85-90 wins. I don't really know if I can call the Brewers' season disappointing yet. PECOTA had them at I think 85 wins just before the season started, and they're still only a few games off that pace. I think the Weeks injury probably cost them 2 wins or so (along with the cost of Lopez), which would put them at 83, then the combo of Bush, Suppan probably cost a game. However, the fact that Gallardo has been healthy all year (I think PECOTA had him at 80 innings, I might be wrong though), so that probably makes up for those things. So, to sum up my rant, I don't think the Brewers can be considered one of the most disappointing teams. They're around .500, and they were expected to be just above .500.
  13. I hadn't realized how much Teagarden had struggled this year, but really? Pudge has been pretty bad offensively this year (have no clue about defense, as subjective as it may be), and depending on who the mid-level prospects, this could be a steal for the 'Stros. If I were a Rangers fan, this is not exactly the guy I'd want to see behind the plate for the wild card run. Maybe they're planning to have him split time with Teagarden? Edit: Just saw on MLBTR that Pudge would back up Teagarden, I guess this makes more sense now.
  14. I think I'd rather see them try and move someone like Wooten back to starting. Are Stetter's splits against righties good enough for him to face them that often? I haven't looked recently.
  15. I was about to say, Macha will probably turn this into a Victor Martinez deal. Kendall starts every other day at first and hits cleanup. That Prince guy doesn't do much anyways.
  16. I guess you've got to give them for making this interesting...My pride was hoping that they could pick up a game on the Cubs...C'mon bullpen/defense.
  17. Just realized Parra has the 14th highest BABIP of all time for pitchers with over 200 IP. He'll probably move into 12th or 13th after this game.
  18. Sad day for Jason Kendall. He now has a pitcher, Craig Counsell, and a backup catcher who gets less than 100 PA's a year ahead of him in HR's.
  19. Wow, can't wait for MLB to put up that highlight. That sounded Branyanesque.
  20. Parra has more career hits than Escobar. He is clearly a better hitter.
  21. Wow. Division really spreading out now, STL up by 4 and MIL down by 7.5 Last night BP had the playoff odds at 2.2%, which is actually better than I would have though. I bet they fall near 1% now, this is getting really ugly. On a positive note, got the live look in for the last AB and man can Escobar fly.
  22. Wow, just got back from work to see this, pretty surprising news. I don't know if it would be wise to manipulate JJ's service time so blatantly, for obvious reasons. For a guy like Hardy who is so good defensively at a premium position to get sent to the minors for putting up the line he has at the plate (obviously it's bad, but it's not that bad) seems a bit silly. This must just be a move of wanting to get Escobar some major league experience before next year, when the team (maybe) plans on contending? I just can't think of any other reason.
