  1. The only silver lining is that it will soon be over.
  2. I'm genuinely curious: Has there ever once been a player who has used the "no, I didn't use, I'm being truthful, etc." line of defense who hasn't looked worse 5 years down the road than if he'd simply said "Yeah, I made a mistake, etc." a la Andy Pettite? As a Brewers fan, one of the things that gets you through the brutal years is having a player who looks like he's going to be a first-ballot HOF'er going out there 150 games a year and being great. It may be a long time before we have another MVP-caliber player signed to a gajillion year deal...
  3. Without knowing the circumstances, is taking a PED that's past the arbitrary line MLB draws wrong? It's definitely one of the lesser evils on this planet. But trashing his sample collector was pretty sleazy.
  4. Can somebody send Selig a scribbled note with Yuni's name?
  5. I don't think anybody is suggesting (hopefully) any Braun conspiracy theories. The point is really that MLB is willing to jump on what seems to be fairly poor evidence from a really sketchy source. Anybody on here want to chip in and start a fake website that can be traced back to Yadier Molina with a PED packaged as a useful supplement, and then ship him said supplement, only to have MLB find that Yadier oh so cleverly created a fake website as a desperate attempt to hide his guilt? Actually given that the NL Central actually has good teams these days, we probably need to make about 60-70 of these websites if we want any hope of competing in the next few years...
  6. About halfway through his Freshman season, Marshall won the starting PG job from incumbent Larry Drew II, prompting Drew II to transfer to UCLA mid-season. I don't think Drew II's departure was particularly amicable, so this could be a very entertaining situation with Henson, Marshall, and Larry Drew.
  7. I wish I could suck at my job as much as the "journalists" at ESPN and not get fired.
  8. 3/5ths of an average / above average rotation is a bad thing? That's a significantly below average top three in the rotation. In the last three years, teams needed a sub-4.00 starters ERA to crack the top half of the NL. I'd expect maybe just a bit under that from those guys.
  9. Aoki - Segura - Braun - Ramirez - Gomez - Hart - Lucroy - Weeks - Pitcher Bring back Hart on a 1 year/$5 million deal if he's willing. If these guys stayed healthy, it would be an incredible lineup. Gallardo - Lohse - Peralta - Oh dear... If this team stayed healthy, I think they could possibly mash their way into contention. I just don't know if I can see that pitching staff competing...
  10. One time my wife told me that she was watching the morning national "news" and they reported that teenage pregnancies in the US are at an all-time high, with one out of every three US teenagers birthing a child. A quick google search revealed that teenage births in the US are actually at an all-time low, with only one out of every thirty or so teenagers giving birth. Although the Ron Burgundy-esque reporting of the SF news station after the plane crash was pretty amusing.
  11. Yesterday I was going to smoke some chicken and pork, but it was rainy so I couldn't. It's been an incredibly rainy July, though I won't complain that it hasn't yet hit 90 degrees here in the month. Whole Foods likes to remind me with big scary red lettering that garbage goes to landfills. But they have no problem selling crappy "heirloom" tomatoes and figs from California when good heirloom tomatoes and figs grow like a weed in July down here, and can be had at a Farmers' market for half the price.
  12. Too bad they can't date the suspension to the date he first hit the DL... Pr(User|Denial of use)=1.
  13. Not all writers look at WAR, but WAR is strongly correlated with things writers do look at (HR's, hits, BB's, position). Since 1990, there has been just one hitter to be elected into the HOF with fewer than 50 bWAR. Jim Rice had 47.1 bWAR in his career. Dunn has 16.4 bWAR. I'm willing to dismiss his terrible dWAR because he should have been a DH long ago. But even so that only adds a few WAR. Writers don't make decisions based solely on WAR, but they do make their decisions based on the components which constitute WAR. If Dunn makes the HoF, he will unquestionably be the worst player elected in recent memory, and it won't even be close.
  14. My preference is also for guys who at least dominate the league for a few years. To me, a guy like Sandy Koufax, who is short of the 60 WAR mark, is an absolute no-brainer first ballot HOF'er for me, because he was historically dominant for a few years toward the end of his career.
  15. Dunn shouldn't have a chance to get in. Based on recent HOF votes, I wouldn't bet on him getting in. But if he gets close, I won't be shocked. Check out the bottom of Dunn's B-Ref page with his leaderboard ranks. He's a Hall of Very Good guy at best. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dunnad01.shtml
  16. Bill Bergen, probably the worst player of all time at anything, once put up a .214 OBP in about 350 PA's. I have a dream that Yuni can put up a similarly low OBP over a similarly high number of PA's.
  17. It's disappointing, but how much more will Aoki even get on the FA market? He's going to be 32 years old in 2014, and I doubt he'll command more than a 2/$10-$12 deal on the FA market if he keeps up what he's done for the past 1.5 years. I'd rather have him around at the discounted rate, but it's not a huge blow.
  18. .205/.235/.343 Just let him keep playing and see if he can set the negative WAR record.
  19. Let's play name the Brewers' starting pitchers without looking it up...All eleven of them! (The whole list with Thornburg is Gallardo, Lohse, Hand, Peralta, Estrada, Gorzellany, Hellweg, Burgos, Figaro, Fiers, Thornburg). Th
  20. The Brewers just need to consider whether (i) getting another 350 PA's this season in AAA or (ii) getting another 350 PA's this season in MLB will make Hunter Morris a better player from 2014-2019. If they think he needs to develop in AAA I don't see the need to bring him up and have him struggle, but if they think he can gain just as much from 350 PA's in the bigs, then they should obviously bring him up. The scenario I don't want to see is them promoting him to MLB and then giving him only 3-4 starts per week.
  21. Could we pool together to send a nice note over to Baltimore and ask nicely for Travis Ishikawa. It's not asking for much, but he's at least a bit better than replacement level so about 45 wins better than our current 1B crew.
  22. Again, Bryce Harper is listed at the exact same height & weight. The only issue I think there is with Trout is how and when his speed will leave. Yeah, I was just thinking it might be more of an issue for Trout than Harper due to the way he plays. But as a defender, he seems to have good instincts (though I don't see him much as he's on the West Coast). So I think even if he slows down he'll at best be a + corner outfielder.
  23. I think if there's any argument that Trout isn't the best option going forward it has to center around the possibility that with his body shape he just doesn't age well. Up to this point, he's been historically dominant. Segura, Harper, and Machado have all been great, but nothing they've done so far has been close to Trout's success. However, if: (i) Trout's body leads to a rapid decrease in his defensive capabilities causing him to move from CF to a corner or 1B and (ii) this decrease in defensive value coincides with a decrease in his baserunning ability, then I think you can start to look at the other guys. But given the way he hits, I think even an average fielding LF version of Mike Trout is the pick to make here, although it's not entirely clear. I am thrilled with Segura because he's a Brewer, but I need to see him sustain his power for a bit longer. His walk rate leaves a lot to be desired, although I see no reason he can't get on base at a .340-.350 clip given that he's fast and keeps the ball on the ground for the most part, so he should be able to consistently carry an average around .300. He's a very nice piece, but I just need to see him sustain this power for a bit longer before I lump him in with Trout, Harper, and Machado.
  24. Didn't realize those guys were so far away. Eh, why the heck not give Hellweg a go. At least gives me a reason to watch!
