  1. Brian Anderson hasn't patrolled the outfield for the Sox since 2009. Quite frankly, I find it impressive that he was still able to find time to announce ball games.
  2. Until you said this, I was going to say Brewers fans have successfully trolled the troll. But perhaps Caple has ulterior motives here. Perhaps he has trolled the trolls for trying to troll the troll. No, that's giving Caple way too much credit.
  3. Why not just DFA Izturis? Maysonet is like a younger Cesar Izturis at the plate and probably about as good in the field these days. *I didn't realize this, but Maysonet is actually only one year younger than Izturis. Unsurprisingly, Bianchi has cooled. Despite his struggles so far Ransom has still outhit Izturis by a wide margin, and we should expect him to hit better than Izturis.
  4. Hernandez's numbers really aren't all that bad. Bill Hall isn't even a serviceable player these days; he hit .239/.285/.408 in AAA this season for Norfolk and really struggled for the Astros and Giants last season. Really too bad about Hall; perhaps we can have him throw out the first pitch on Mothers' Day some time...
  5. From 2010-2011 he put up an ERA of just under 4 in ~400 IP (62 starts), with peripherals that backed it up. He's only pitched 31 innings this year in relief and it hasn't been too bad. Good insurance for the 5-hole if Marcum ends up staying out for a while. Edit: Maybe leave Fiers in the rotation for Estrada, put Hernandez in for Macrum and send Estrada to the pen? I should probably mention that my obsession with aging pitchers who throw <84MPH fastballs might be clouding my vision.
  6. Just for fun, how do people here tend to rank the ballparks they've actually watched a game from? For me, it's: Coors Field > Ballpark at Arlington > Miller Park > Wrigley Field > Rogers Center > Metrodome Also, do MiLB parks tend to have better beer than MLB parks? I've only been to Cedar Rapids and Durham, and I never checked at Cedar Rapids, but at Durham Bulls Athletic Park we have separate stands for at least Foothills, Lagunitas, and New Belgium. I never remember seeing a beer selection of that quality at Miller Park.
  7. That sounds goofy but I imagine it might work if a team has a very good 1-4 and then a significantly worse #5 option (like, Mike Burns bad) with a very good, deep bullpen. That is, so long as the 4-man 75 pitch count rotation isn't any more taxing than the 5-man, 100-110 pitch count rotation. I mean, if you had Greinke-Dickey-Verlander-Cain as your 1-4 and your #5 was a replacement level guy it would probably work as long as your bullpen happened to have lots of good guys that could pitch a ton of innings. If Roenicke tried that with this team though, I would revolt.
  8. Remember, K-Rod is the 8th inning guy. Well, that ended better than I expected.
  9. I probably wouldn't vote him in. Right now, I don't expect he'll get in. However, if he adds to his legacy by putting out 150 hits over 700 AB's over the next couple of years for some middling franchise, I bet he'll get in.
  10. I can't wait to watch Gomez lead off! His speed ensures we'll score many runs today! Makin' things happen!!!
  11. How the front office should handle any pitching injury: "Shaun, it looks like there is some strictly positive probability that we will need to go ahead with Tommy John Surgery. On a brighter note, we're willing to offer you a 5 year, $5 million contract because we're such nice guys"
  12. He looked pretty comfortable up there! Thornburg's career OPS at Charleston Southern was .841, so he should swing a good bat for a pitcher. Then again, Marcum put up similar numbers in college.
  13. As NL fans we should really be banding together and electing the absolute worst players from the AL to start the All-Star game. That way, we'd get at least three innings of horrendous play from the AL. It would be a solid advantage. C - Kurt Suzuki (.240 wOBA) 1B - Casey Kotchman (.284 wOBA) 2B - Robert Andino (.274 wOBA) SS - Alexei Ramirez (.240 wOBA) 3B - Sean Rodriguez (.269 wOBA) OF - Delmon Young (.296 wOBA) OF - Brennan Boesch (.280 wOBA) OF - Jeff Francoeur (.307 wOBA) DH - YUNI!
  14. That took a while. Conrad has the lowest batting average of all time for Brewers with 40+ PA's, not including pitchers. Including pitchers, he's 5th, just behind Ben Sheets.
  15. It has to be pretty rare to see a non-doubleheader game at this point in the season where both pitchers are making their first career start, right? I always thought Thornburg was a 1st round or Comp pick. Cool to see a 3rd round pick make it to the big leagues in just a couple of seasons.
  16. R.A. Dickey 9IP 1H 0R 13K 2BB That's five straight without an earned run. What a great story.
  17. I wish Bill would stop talking about Lawrie leading the team in errors. Nice to see Aram look like the guy we used to loathe.
  18. Thanks rluz. So DRS does not throw out those plays from what I understand. Looks like much of his inflated DRS could be coming from that shift then; the article from the Ottawa paper (silly Canadians talking defensive metrics!) says 5 of his 12 runs saved up to a point were from right of 2B. So it seems that the shift is causing at least some part of the disparity, no?
  19. Omar Vizquel has 2851 hits. He's probably a borderline HOF player right now. I wonder if some terrible team in need of a SS would be willing to let him take hacks next year? He'll probably need 120 hits after this season, so if he can just find 720 AB's over two seasons and hit about .170 he'll crack 3,000 hits. (I love milestone HOF voting logic: "Yeah, you're borderline right now, but if you play out the string below replacement level and put up a horrendous batting line over 720 AB's, we'll certainly vote you in")
  20. I think UZR's method throws out shifts, but I'd have to think BBRef's doesn't throw out shifts or something goofy. Has anybody actually watched enough of his defense in the majors to comment? Every defensive metric grades him out as a very good defender, and I expected him to be a bit of a butcher to be honest.
  21. Im not sure what d metroc they use over there but uzr only has him at +7 runs. So far bref has him at +40 in 110 or so games. Thats downright screwy.
  22. Moldy's line between AA and AAA is about .255/.325/.400. So no, I don't believe we should expect Maldonado outhit Kottaras in the majors. Zips projects Maldonado to put up a .293 wOBA and Kottaras a .322. I'll take Moldy but not for his offense.
