  1. JS writers must love it when JA Happ is pitching. "A Happless Performance", "Happhazard Lineup Fails Again", etc...
  2. It's ugly for certain. Here's what I'd do (once Gomez is back): vs. RHP vs. LHP CF Aoki 2B Weeks 2B Weeks C Lucroy LF Braun LF Braun 3B Ramirez 3B Ramirez RF Hart 1B Hart C Lucroy CF Gomez 1B Green RF Aoki SS Izturis SS Not Applicable P P This team needs a ton of things to go right to have a fighting chance. They ought to drop one of Ishikawa or Green; having two left-handed 1B on a roster doesn't do them any good. Green can hit better than Ishikawa and play 2B and 3B so the answer should be obvious, but Ishikawa guaranteed himself a roster spot two nights ago at least until the break. All I can say is that worse teams have made it to the postseason. For as awful as the first month was, they'll only be five back with a win today. Meh, I can't take much solace in any of this. Just gotta hope for something crazy!
  3. Conrad may be the best 1B option with a lefty on the mound right now. With Gomez back though, they ought to just move Hart to 1B against lefties and play Braun-Gomez-Aoki in the OF, and send Conrad back from whence he came. Also, I'm calling it: Conrad will get a base hit tonight.
  4. I really profile as an all-field no-hit DH, but I suppose I could try and hack it at short.
  5. He has never logged a ML inning at any position other than 2B. Perhaps we could just play 2 second baseman and no shortstop. Nothing would get through the right side of the infield! Edit: I'm too lazy to put in blue font.
  6. Sign Hudson, ditch Conrad? I'm waiting for Jason Bartlett to be released as well.
  7. Lawrie is dropping his appeal. It must have been scheduled during Happy Hour.
  8. From Wiki, Gibson's career avg/slg is .359/.648. With 255 walks and 1855 AB's, his OBP may have been in the .430-.440 range, so we're talking a NNL OPS approaching 1.100 (very similar to Ruth's career line, hence his nickname). Per wiki, he went 21/56 (.375) with 2 HR's against MLB pitchers in his career.
  9. That's a game fewer than Hamels got for admitting he hit Harper intentionally. He got off incredibly easy. It's somewhat surprising he didn't get at least 5, which I thought was somewhat standard.
  10. Aoki is projected for a .287/.335/.398 line. The only guys with a higher projected OBP are Kottaras (.339), Weeks (.339), and Braun (.363). That ain't good.
  11. Just because Hatcher has nothing to do with Pujols' slow start doesn't mean people won't accept him as the scapegoat. I'm sure most news outlets will only perpetuate those feelings... As of today, Pujols' updated Zips projection (for the whole season) is just .269/.341/.462/.803. Not what you expect for $250 million.
  12. I went to a game at Coors Field in 2007. Vargas gave up six runs in the 1st inning. From then on, I've referred to him as Claudio "Ball Goes Farthest" Vargas. His MiLB numbers are ugly. Maybe they brought him in to pitch batting practice.
  13. Greenberg actually missed more like 4.5 due to the war, he only played 19 games in 1941 and returned in the summer of 1945, playing only 78 games that year. Those were his age 30-34 seasons, and given that he was again dominant in '46, he very well could have hit 500 HR's. He often seems to be forgotten in discussions of the game's all time greats, which is really a shame. His wOBA ranks 6th all time. Also, I don't think the list is just ranking hitting ability, so that could have something to do with it.
  14. If you assume for a moment that Bonds never did anything sketchy, he has to be soundly inside the top 20. Here are some of his all-time ranks: wRC+: 3rd wOBA: 11th SLG: 6th OBP: 6th HR: 1st If we're ranking purely on the basis of what they did on the major league field, I don't see how you can keep Bonds out of the top 20. But, it's completely understandable if you want to knock him down quite a few pegs for his less than savory reputation. Another thing I find interesting: only three of the guys in the top 20 were in their prime from about 1975-2012. We should always remember that players from the early eras played against a significantly restricted talent pool. Just think about how much better the pitching would have been if the bottom 20% of scrub innings were replaced by the top Negro league pitchers of the day!
  15. The forecast is looking better. They should get this one started on time and at least get 2-2.5 hours of baseball in before maybe delaying things, so long as the field is ready to go.
  16. Weather looks maybe a touch better than it did earlier in the day, via weather.com. It's giving NY a 25% chance of rain from 7-8, a 45% chance of rain from 8-9, and a 60% chance of rain from 9-10. Looks like it should be fairly dry until the start of the game.
  17. H&T - using the pitchFX numbers, his O-Swing% is only 22.6 this season (35.7 career) and his z-swing% is 76.3% this season compared to 67.7% career. So, it seems that so far he has been swinging at better pitches.
  18. I'd absolutely consider doing that against LHP if Lucroy is a decent 1B, and I would even promise not to complain about Kottaras starting against the lefty. Healthy lineup of Weeks-Lucroy-Braun-Ramirez-Hart-Gomez-Kottaras-Gallardo, filling out the last spot with Izturis if it's a weak LHP and a sack of onions if it's a dominating LHP. Of course, if Lucroy can't play 1B or if Roenicke thinks giving him those days off is more important, it's probably not for the best.
  19. I remember that Chris Saenz game, specifically Rock talking about how in today's game you do take a guy out after 6 innings scoreless at times. I thought he had a no-no through 5, but I guess that part of my memory is wrong. What a sad story in baseball. Pitched one very good game in the majors, got a W, and never saw the league again. He last pitched in 2008 for Schaumburg, posting a 8.42 ERA in 19 appearances.
  20. The timing here is indeed a bit awkward with the whole decapitated Mexican murder scene thing. I love chorizo, whether Mexican or Spanish, it's a wonderful sausage.
  21. Just to remind you, I'm pretty sure it's a 3 year deal with an option for the 4th year.
  22. Weather.com has a ~15% chance of precipitation from now until about 10:00 PM. I always look forward to these 7:00 ET starts so if this doesn't get started on time I will throw a hissy fit.
  23. I imagine if Roenicke decided to bat Izturis behind Braun his numbers would change. Whether you have Fielder or Ramirez behind you, you're better off trying to deal with Braun than face Fielder or Ramirez with him on base. I wonder if you looked at the difference in outcomes for the same players when hitting 8th in front of a pitcher vs. up in the order in front of a competent hitter if you'd find that there is a significant difference. *Also, what I remember from the study I've read about "protection" is that it doesn't change a batters' overall production, but I'm not sure if I've read anything that indicates that how they put up the production changes, i.e. it could be that Braun is just as valuable, but he draws more walks, hits for a bit less power, etc.; just that those effects both even out, so to speak. I imagine somebody has looked into this and I imagine the conclusion would be that the effect is once again minimal, but I'm curious to know whether that's been looked at.
  24. Yeah, that was just poorly worded on my part. I meant "even out" in the sense that I wouldn't predict this to continue, and by the end of the season the discrepancy won't look so large.
  25. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSdriY4k7olsQeIUkdFPrgzixLo6gMlkMRduni4zux-YarwwINZzA I thought this was his baby...
