  1. I vaguely remember somebody here making a very optimistic Swansea prediction, as I also remember feeling like they looked really dangerous early on. At least relegation battles are amusing. I'm really curious to see what PSG does tomorrow; Ligue 1 seems to be pretty terrible and they've faced almost no competition domestically but they do look legitimately good.
  2. Wisconsin should be solidly on the right side of the bubble, looks like most brackets on bracketmatrix which have been updated have them an 8-10 seed. A reasonable projection would be 3-3 in the final six games which should put them in at 19-12. If neither Stone's head slam or Grayson Allen's open-floor trip qualifies as a flagrant-2 I'm not sure what does. I think this may be the year UVA makes a run in the tourney, based on nothing more than silly gut instinct.
  3. Bump. I'm enjoying following the USMNT players like I'll be following the Brewers next season. Christian Pulisic looks like he might become really, really special. He is clearly well respected at Dortmund, as he's gotten about 30 minutes in each of three Bundesliga matches since being called up to the senior squad. I finally had a chance to watch for the final ten minutes today, he made a few good runs and made a great cross that likely would have ended in the back of the net were it not for a sharp clearance. How many current USMNT players would get this kind of run with a team the quality of Dortmund? I can't imagine more than a handful. I've not been impressed with Yedlin at Sunderland (is it possible to impress at Sunderland??) but he did a decent job handing right back for them today. I fear Matt Miazga may be relegated to the back of the bench in Chelsea, but he is looking quite promising. Miazga and John Brooks could form the core of a really strong back-line in the future. Cameron Carter-Vickers will be on Tottenham's Europa League roster, though he's probably still a few months from debuting. Joshua Perez has joined Fiorentina; I don't know much about him but they seem to like him from what I'm reading. Julian Green has been bench-ridden the entire season and honestly had a hugely disappointing 1.5 years post-Brazil. Zelalem is at least getting time for Rangers on his loan.
  4. My biggest issue with the blackout rules is that there are areas where teams are blacked out on MLB.tv and also quite difficult to find on local cable plans. This may have changed in the past 5 years, but when I lived in Iowa, I could not watch Milwaukee, Minnesota, the Cubs, White Sox, Kansas City, or St. Louis. However, I'm not sure FS Wisconsin was available on any cable packages (they may have been on specialty tiers). But this is all a bit silly; I would much rather be a true 'out-of-market' fan following the Brewers than a fan in Wisconsin. I may not sign up this year simply because the team won't compete, but I'll certainly return to MLBtv if they become competitive in the next 2-3 years.
  5. Segura's 2013 season is getting pretty distant in terms of projecting his future performance. This has been repeated by many posters many times, but he has been one of the worst couple of shortstops in the major leagues in the past two seasons. Among the 40 shortstops with 500 PA's from 2014-2015, Segura is 38th in fWAR, 37th in wRC+, 37th in ISO, 39th in BB%, 21st in BA, 34th in OBP, 36th in SLG, 36th in wOBA. Among the 17 shortstops with 1000 PA's from 2014-2015 (loosely defined as guys who started for the past two seasons), he's dead last in fWAR (0.2 vs. 2.0 for 'runner-up'), wRC+ (64 vs. 72), wOBA (.270 vs. .279). He's a good baserunner and defender which I'd imagine is enough to keep him on an MLB roster even if his bat does not improve.
  6. At this point he's got to be viewed as a stop-gap. We've hashed this over many times but he has been one of the worst every-day batters in MLB over the past couple of seasons, and really only stays above the replacement level threshold because he's a solid defender. At $2.6MM, he probably carries minimal value on a trade market, and given the state of the team for this upcoming season I suspect management will just hold on to him until Arcia is ready.
  7. Just for fun, let's assume he is able to produce at his 2015 level for three more seasons. Even so, I don't see salary inflation to the point where he will get 50/year on a long-term deal. The only way I could see this happening is if he does something strange like take a 2 year/100 million deal, though I doubt he'd do that.
  8. I was surprised to see that at first, but not all that surprised when I actually thought about it. Two HOF'ers playing together for a half-dozen years, Yount with one of the greatest SS seasons of all time in '82. Granted, I'd imagine there aren't too many baseball fans who remember how good that infield was, given that we're going on 35 years from that team!
  9. That actually does sound more serious than I had initially thought as well. The only reasonable solution is for MLB to allow brewerfan.net to vote on the next uniform for the Cardinals. I'm thinking untucked mustard dress shirt, clip-on-tie, cutoff jorts, and propeller hats.
  10. Ty Cobb (and countless others) say hi.
  11. AAAA is generous given his last two minor league stints (sub-300 OBP, sub-400 SLG)! It's a minor league deal for a guy who a couple of years ago looked to have some promise. Might as well take a look, which seems to be the BF.net groupthink on this one.
  12. That's fair, but projecting him forward I'd prefer to take into account at least three years (I think I remember rluz saying 20% on three years ago, 30% on two years ago, 50% on one year ago is a nice rule of thumb). So realistically I'm skeptical of projecting him as a 3 WAR guy for next year.
  13. I'm not sure I see how Lind would carry all that much excess value in the trade market. His last 5 fWAR's have been {0.2, -0.1, 1.6, 1.5, 2.2}. It seems more reasonable to project him as league-average player given his platoon issues and low position value. At $8 million, I just can't imagine he has much value on the trade market unless I'm missing something. I know very little about these prospects (seems to be a theme) but their K/BB ratios all look very good last year in limited innings. Nothing to get overly excited about here, but hard for me to be too dismayed about losing an average player at Lind's salary.
  14. At this point you have to imagine Segura's only value (if any) is his ability to field decently at SS. Among all players with 300 PA's, he was 13th from last in wRC+ in 2015. He was 9th from last in wRC+ among all players with 300+ PA's in 2014. I guess I just don't see the point.
  15. I wonder too if this is somewhat myopic from MLB's standpoint. The Hardball Times paper brought up in the expansion thread touched on the demographics of baseball viewers, and something like 50% of MLB viewers are over age 55. If I didn't have access to these games on mobile applications, I wouldn't make much of an effort to watch.
  16. It's probably time for a 'Curse the Cubs' thread. I don't care if I now live 750 miles from the accursed 'Wrigley Field'. This needs to end.
  17. I would love the doubleheader idea, though I'd doubt it would actually happen. I also wish they still played both games on the same night (didn't they do that a couple years ago?). How often are the three best records in the same division? You have to think it's pretty rare.
  18. I was really hoping to find something like the following title to post to facebook: "Rodgers out for season after sack"
  19. 8 points through 8 games for Chelsea. Figure they'll need minimum of 70 points to qualify for UCL next season, or something like 18-8-4 over the rest of the season. Yedlin got the start today for Sunderland, who blew a 2-0 lead.
  20. Yeah, I really don't have time to follow more than one league + champions league, and it's hard to leave the quality of NBC's coverage.
  21. Perhaps Mourinho wants to win in another league? He's already got his Premier League title, so might as well get relegated and win a Championship title.
  22. I'd have to imagine he still has the most value at SS; his defense is probably about average there so I'm not sure I understand the desire to move him. Looking at his offense during 2014-2015 (arbitrary start-point, though two years out I'm not sure his 2013 should be given much weight anyway), he's one of the ten or so least productive hitters in MLB. Among qualified players he's 3rd to last in wOBA over that span. So even at what I believe is his most valuable position, he's performed like a replacement-level guy. If the Arb-1 figure is going to be around $3MM that's getting close to non-tender territory, though with the club's projected finish next year I suppose it can't hurt to give him another year...
  23. I scored some of New Glarus' special releases this summer while in Wisconsin. The blended Gueuze was fantastic: hugely tart, moderately funky/horsey/barnyardy going on. I'd drink a lot of this at a lower price point/higher availability. I wasn't crazy about the Wild Bitter. Solid beer, but I'm just not that interested by a big IPA with some funk.
  24. There's been talk around here of the bottom dropping out with Fiers just about as long as he'd been with the club. Then it dropped out in the beginning of 2013. Since then: 215 IP, 3.13 ERA, 9.3 K/9, 2.9 BB/9, 1.0 HR/9. When he's had the opportunity to be in a major league rotation, he has been very good. I have no idea why major league hitters struggle with Fiers, but they've had difficulty with him for nearly 400 innings now. I always root for those types of players.
  25. I wish i could doubt they'd bring him up just to sit him behind Peterson, but the concern did cross my mind. With only two weeks in the AAA season left though, hopefully this isn't just an early call-up. I'm not sure what else the guy could have done in AAA, so might as well get him 100 PA's at the MLB level before next season.
