  2. Those kids are despicable. Trying to enjoy themselves while playing a baseball game. Poor Chris Carpenter.
  3. If fangraphs has the probabilities at 100%, can we post a number? Of course, pegging LaRussa's BAC at 0.23 would be pretty conservative, now wouldn't it?
  4. The Cardinals will be 10 games back at the end of the night, barring something drastic. The best part of this all is that the Brewers had their streak after the trading deadline. Pujols and Berkman would have been pretty darn attractive to teams looking for a big bat, but now they'll be playing out the string in STL (Pujols trade would have been shocking, but Berkman would have been great trade bait).
  5. I'm sorry to hear that TLB, although I'm glad to hear that she went peacefully. My childhood retriever is probably not going to make it much longer and I'm already dreading that phone call.
  6. When Haudricourt called the lineup "unique", I was worried. Outside of Hart in the 5-hole and Kotsay on the bench, this lineup doesn't seem too bad. Ahead by 8.5 games I really don't mind giving a few regulars a game off during a doubleheader.
  7. I think ESPN is carrying ManU-Spurs tomorrow, which should be a fun one. Barca-Real was a blast last week. I think they should still play 3-4 more times this year. La Liga still hasn't started league play though as far as I know, there's some labor dispute going on.
  8. I remember reading an article in SI about Ricketts after the team was sold and at the time I was pretty concerned. Then he kept Hendry around for a couple more seasons. He seems like a pretty smart guy, but hopefully that doesn't translate to baseball. If you take away the Soriano and Zambrano contracts, Hendry's career looks a lot better. Unfortunately those moves were both pretty crippling to the franchise, even with their wealth.
  9. This. Again. I love Prince and he has been a joy to watch, but the money can be better spent filling holes at SS and 3B. Whoever Prince signs for I'll cheer for the big guy. He has been nothing short of a class act these years. He works hard to be the best ballplayer he can be and he runs out weak grounders like David Eckstein.
  10. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uXqrgFs_cbM/TAeu4LyNX5I/AAAAAAAAAJU/rb0q-wQKIR4/s1600/toddlers.jpg I once dated a chick who was totally a hot model. I broke up with her.
  11. I had to stop watching to finish dinner (and to avoid throwing something at the TV). This team is awesome.
  12. Anybody have any idea how far that ball went? With its low trajectory I imagine it would have been quite far if it hadn't been for those meddling grandstands.
  13. Not only do I get to watch the game, but I get to watch the game in HD! Don't disappoint me here Brew Crew. Greedy funketown wants to see a 8.5 game lead by the end of the day.
  14. I finally got around to watching Ken Burns' Baseball I feel the same way. He just seemed like a great guy, and an unwavering optimist even in the darkest of hours. For me, many of my favorites were my boyhood favorites: NHL: 1) Pavel Bure: I became a Canucks fan when I was 4-5 years old, watching Pavel Bure with my older brother. Without a doubt one of the greatest pure talents the NHL has ever seen and will ever see. Insanely talented. If he hadn't been so injury prone, he would have scored 700+ goals. 2) Trevor Linden: Not nearly as talented as Bure, but he was the heart and soul of my childhood Canucks. 3) Kirk McLean: Same story. Google Kirk McLean and Trevor Linden and you'll find a classic photo. (Current favorites: Ryan Kesler, Alex Ovechkin) MLB: 1) Rickie Weeks: What else can I say that hasn't been said on this board? 2) Andrew McCutchen: I'm a sucker for a well-rounded ballplayer. 3) Jackie Robinson: Yeah, I said I just watched Ken Burns baseball. Great ballplayer with a great head on his shoulders. I think people forget how good he was in his short career. Soccer: 1) Lionel Messi: Just an absurdly talented player. I wish I could dislike this guy, but he is just such a joy to watch. 2) Clint Dempsey: I tune into Fulham matches just to watch him play. Great to watch an American have that kind of success in the EPL. 3) Gareth Bale: Incredible athlete. Just a blast to watch.
  15. I actually did the same these past couple of weeks.? I bought about 40 pounds of ugly tomatoes for $25 at the farmer's market.? We're the proud owners of about 10 quarts of tomato sauce to get us through...September. I love buying ugly heirloom tomatoes during the summer at farmer's market.? They usually run about a buck a pound and I've probably gone through 30-40 pounds this summer already.? Good for Gazpacho too.
  16. I really hope the Brewers sign Hairston or a similar player to a $2-$2.5 million dollar deal, maybe $4 for 2 years. He's a really nifty piece on the back end of the roster and offers great injury insurance should Weeks, Morgan, Yuni, or McGehee go down for an extended period of time. He's a kind of like a strange, mediocre 5-tool player in that he doesn't really have any skills that are significantly above average, but he hits for a decent average, has a touch of power, fields and throws competently, and runs the bases reasonably well.
  17. I was thinking about this today, so I'll bump it. Here's what I would do if I were Mr. Melvin: OF (5) Braun, Hart, Morgan, Gomez, Kotsay IF Fielder, Weeks, Betancourt, McGehee, Hairston, Counsell, Green C (2) Lucroy, Kottaras SP (3.5) Greinke, Marcum, Gallardo, Wolf RP (7.5) Axford, K-Rod, Saito, Hawkins, Loe, Estrada, Wolf, Narveson I could go either way with Counsell/Wilson. Because it's the playoffs and back ups won't start many (if any) games, I think I'd rather go with Counsell than Wilson for his defensive abilities.
  18. Now we're talking! With Weeks back, I don't think Kotsay will be the best option for a DH even if Green or Gamel is called up. I'd rather see something like Yuni or Braun moved to DH while Jerry Hairston Jr. takes their place. During Kottaras' starts, Lucroy can DH. With a healthy team and both JHJ and Carlos Gomez on the roster, I do wonder what will happen to Kotsay for the playoffs. There should be a spot for him, and I honestly don't have a huge problem with that so long as he is actually treated like the 25th man on the roster.
  19. What was the deal with that again? I heard Ueck talking about Spanky's for quite some time, but I wasn't listening closely enough to know what he was talking about. I don't know much about Eovaldi, but his AAA numbers look pretty solid. His MiLB HR rates seem to be pretty low. Gotta get this run in here. Put on those shades, Corey...
  20. KegStand, you beat me to it. Great minds like a think.
  21. McCutchen just hit a 3-R homer. The Pirates lead the Cardinals 3-1 now. 17 minutes until the first pitch. Let's all soak up this season while we can, these years don't happen often for our club.
  22. I can see it right now: "Wolfie pitched great, hit his spots and made clutch pitches when he needed to." I love good defense. It's a real treat to watch this team make a couple of plays like that in the span of two innings.
  23. AWESOME! I can't believe they got that off when Wilson's flip was a touch high. I'm not taking away from what Wilson did (it was a great play), but usually if that flip isn't perfect you have no chance at three. Does this pass up Yuni's BTB flip as the play of the year? I think so. Edit: I only saw the play out of the corner of my eye at first, so I didn't see that Kemp was still on second and tried to go home. I was wondering how in the heck Kemp took that long to get from third to home!
  24. There's a pretty good chance that you'd be right about Fielder getting the MVP. Ultimately I just don't see someone who is a clear front runner in the NL this year; I think there are probably 5-6 guys that have a good case for the award, and that's not even considering the year Roy Halladay has put up.
