  1. His FB is actually down a bit this year, at 97.9 MPH average. I'm really happy Melvin didn't spend $30 million on Chapman.
  2. I don't know if anybody caught the US Women's quarterfinal match against Brazil, but they just won an incredible match against Brazil. They tied it in the 121st minute and then won in PK's. Brazil's first goal was an abomination; a penalty that was saved by Hope Solo was ordered to be retaken despite no violation by Solo. Big congratulations to the US Women's National Team.
  3. Haven't had the chance to listen to Cirillo too much. From 1997-1999, Cirillo posted 17.2 WAR, good for 17th in the majors over that time period. He was a really good hitter for 5-6 years there, and it will be interesting to hear his take on things.
  4. We're obviously doing our best to try and let Willis settle into the majors again. I always liked watching the D-Train when he was on his game; hopefully he still has that old school leg kick.
  5. Scarpetta is certainly a surprising call up to see. I'm guessing this is just to have a guy they can give some mop-up innings; his numbers this year are pretty mediocre in AA. I actually hope they give Gamel a few starts in LF/RF over the course of the next few months. It would be really nice for the club to have him as an option rather than Kotsay.
  6. He could use the exercise... I'm really wondering when Yuni's final straw will be. Of course, as I type this, I see in play, run(s). I think something has to happen over the break or at least before the deadline.
  7. , deflected by SS Yuniesky Betancourt... Let me guess, probably five or six feet of range needed?
  8. I'm happy for their fans, but I'd much rather see them go on a ten game losing streak right now than a ten game winning streak. I have nothing against them, maybe a slight beef with Karstens, but it's probably awesome for their fans to get to watch Andrew McCutchen position himself as an MVP contender right now. As for being a threat, it would not surprise me to see them finish 5-10 games above .500. I don't see them winning the division, but I would not be completely shocked if they did.
  9. Perhaps the Youngster should take a page out of his book. Good for Jeter. For all the crap he gets around the SABR community, he has been a great player and is certainly a 1st ballot HOF'er. With two more years on this contract, Jeter should be able to crack the top ten on the hits list pretty easily barring injury (Eddie Collins is 10 with 3,315). To crack the top 5, he'd need to pass Tris Speaker at 3,514, which probably isn't completely out of the question if he plays one more season after this contract is up.
  10. Counsell looks like he has completely lost it at the plate, but we need to remember that the guy only has 116 plate appearances. Saying he is completely finished right now is like saying a starter is toast in late April. Aging is, for the most part, a smooth process as far as it pertains to baseball skills. Counsell is almost certainly a worse hitter right now than he was last season, or the season before, but to expect him to hit .172/.274/.212/.486 going forward is hugely pessimistic. He is still a very good defensive player at three positions, and at SS and 3B he is very valuable to this team as a 6th-9th inning defensive replacement, especially as his bat doesn't project to be significantly worse than Yuni's. I just don't see Counsell as being redundant; as a late inning defensive substitute and occasional starter at SS for Yuni, he is a pretty nice piece to this club. Ultimately the club has more use for him than Wilson, who is at best an average defender on the left side of the infield. We've seen how embarrassingly bad this team's defense can be, and I think it would be a big mistake to get rid of a very good defensive infielder simply due to his struggles over the course of what amounts to about three weeks of playing time. (FWIW, Zips projects Yuni with a .295 wOBA, Wilson with a .292, and Counsell with a .287. I personally don't think Counsell will be that productive, but I don't think he'll be significantly worse than Yuni or Wilson. Of course, as a fan I tend to overvalue recent performance and undervalue performance from earlier seasons.)
  11. Logan, what are you referring to? Is it that a grizzled veteran squirrel finds nuts when his club needs him most? Kotsay clearly planned the booted play to make himself more of a hero.
  12. I love waking up to look at the scoreboard on days like today. Man does Coco look fat in that picture or what. Maybe it wasn't for the money, the guy just prefers Cincinnati chili over bratwurst.
  13. Arg, Kotsay. He has negated both of his homers with boneheaded plays in the field. Where are you Brandon Boggs/Jamey Carroll/Carlos Gomez?
  14. I've scoured baseball-reference and I haven't found anything from a starter over the course of a whole season that is even mildly similar to Greinke.
  15. I got to watch Trout play for the Cedar Rapids Kernels last year. Now, if Trout can manage to average 600 AB's per year and hit .250 he'll be a 3,000 hit member by age 39. Not too shabby!
  16. This is a well written and worthwhile article, but there are a few things that I think he missed. Weeks is no longer a bad defender, Morgan/Gomez combined make one of the best defensive center field combos in the majors, and Lucroy is probably right around average behind the plate despite his low CS%.
  17. For the last three years, both are about +12 UZR total. Both are good defensive shortstops; Hardy being on the decline and Escobar being on the rise. Right now, I'd definitely take Escobar from a defensive standpoint. Back on topic, does anybody know the number of days McGehee would need to stay down in the minors for him to not get an arby hearing? It would be interesting to see how that plays out should the circumstance arrive.
  18. Why are you writing that in blue? I know Lucroy has cooled off since May, but there's no reason he shouldn't be hitting up in that lineup.
  19. Counsell is also a solid to plus defender at 2B, SS, and 3B. He's a nice piece to use as a defensive replacement for Yuni or McGehee. He's had a rough go of it at the plate, but I'm not going to call him out based on 114 plate appearances.
  20. They should just send Kotsay to the all-star game. The team is in dire need of some veteran leadership. I really hope the club doesn't try and get Braun on the field until after the break. Losing Braun for 10 games won't be the difference between a playoff appearance and a 2nd place finish; losing Braun for 30-40 games due to some lingering nagging injury could well be the difference.
  21. A .690 OPS would be rank 11th among shortstops. I understand that almost all of that is offset by awful defense...but it's worth pointing out that that isn't a terrible line for a SS. I agree with just about everyone that I would be happier if Yuni wasn't playing SS...but I don't think that problem has a solution unless Melvin makes a tradeNot all OPS's are created equal. OBP-heavy OPS figures are far better than SLG heavy OPS figures, hence the use of linear weights or the quick rule (1.7)*OBP+(SLG). Simply put, a .350/.340/.690 would be fine, but .280/.410/.690 is pretty brutal.
  22. ^ I do recall sitting at games and seeing the first pitch at 7:08.
  23. You're probably not having a great year when in your best month you hit .284/.281/.409/.690.
  24. I really dislike the _:10 start times; I prefer the _:05 start times. Inevitably I always tune in to a 7:10 game at 7:02 and then waste 8 minutes listening to adverts, rather than 3 minutes for a 7:05 game. If I tune in to the start of 30 _:10 games per year, that's two hours per year that I could have done something unproductive with. I hope they don't switch the game times to 7:40 next year. As an early to bed/early riser, I don't like having to stay up until 11:15 ET to catch the conclusion of a game.
  25. You guys are all fools. I totally saw that one coming. Way to go Casey, hopefully this will give the guy some confidence and help him get back to his old stroke.
