  1. Yeah, developing JJ Hardy and Alcides Escobar in a span of five years is much more than most teams can say.
  2. You know how sometimes Democrats (Republicans) vote for the weaker Republican (Democratic) candidate in the primary rather than choosing the best Democrat (Republican)? Sawx fans will go a long way for home field advantage.
  3. I'm sick of this garbage from Melvin. I haven't even heard of this guy, and now the Brewers are signing him to a 1-day contract? DFA Melvin.
  4. I noticed the same thing. In the video of him hitting his homer with Cleveland he looked quite a bit thinner.
  5. Betancourt's slash line is now .224/.247/.325. Here are the lowest OBP's in the league for qualified players for the last 5 years: 2010: .270 (Jose Lopez) 2009: .274 (Yuni B) 2008: .288 (Michael Bourn) 2007: .284 (Tony Pena Jr.) 2006: .259 (Angel Berroa) For all of our sanity, can we please just release this guy and get on with a Counsell/Wilson platoon? I know I criticized the Wilson signing (at the time I thought he was one of the only guys worse than Yuni), but at this point I honestly think he's a significantly better overall player. That's not a compliment to Wilson; Yuni is having a historically awful season.
  6. Amazingly, Ax has only given up 2 HR's in his career so far. I'm sure his HR/FB rate is bound to rise, but his career 2.88 xFIP is extremely good. He seems to have stretches where he loses some control, but overall he has been one of the best closers in the league the last couple years.
  7. I don't think Damon should have any shot at the HOF, although you're probably right that he will get consideration. He's accumulated only 45.4 WAR if you like that metric (70 usually needed to be a good bet), and even in the counting numbers used by voters he only has 223 homers, although if he keeps playing a few more years and gets to 3000 hits he'll obviously be a lock. His overall line is only .287/.354/.436/.790. I would absolutely never consider voting for the guy. I think Damon's definitely a guy who would not really even be considered if he played for Kansas City and Houston.
  8. This from the same source that debated whether or not Johnny Damon is a Hall of Famer last night...
  9. In Neifi Perez' "Worst Season Ever", he put up a .243 wOBA, -13.0 UZR and 3.1 BSR for a grand total of -2.9 WAR. Currently, Yuni is at a .246 wOBA, -4.8 UZR and 1.7 BSR, but is only at -0.6 WAR. I'm pretty sure the only difference here is the quality of league hitting. The 2002 aggregate batting line from the NL was .259/.331/.410/.741. The current 2011 aggregate batting line from the NL is only .251/.319/.385/.704. In any other year, Yuni would be even further into the negative WAR.
  10. The game is also on TBS today so those of us who are outside Wisconsin will get to watch! That is, unless TV Guide is lying to me...
  11. I love watching knuckleballers pitch. Should be a fun one! Gomez and Yuni in the same lineup will be interesting, especially against a knuckler. I could honestly see Wakefield throw a 80 pitch CG today. I wonder why Roenicke is putting Lucroy/Kottaras in the 9-hole and Betancourt in the 6-hole. Meh.
  12. Does fangraphs have blue font? That almost has to be sarcasm, right?
  13. SoCal, thanks for posting that, I was about to do the same. For those who are saying all playoff teams have bad players, this article sums it up pretty well. In the last 9 seasons (2002-2010), there have been 12 starters from playoff teams that have been below replacement level. That's 1.33 players per year. In summation, good teams often have bad or below average players, but they very rarely have a Yuni starting.
  14. I'd say: 1) Central, 2) Mountain, 3) Eastern, 4) Pacific, although I could flip the last two since I'm an early to bed/early riser.
  15. But he's a defensive wizard! I'd rather have Kottaras catch with a hockey goalie's blocker than Nieves with a catcher's mitt. Blue?
  16. Eastern time is annoying. I hate having to stay up to 11:30 on weekdays to watch the end of a Brewers game. Man, I feel old.
  17. DH Weeks RF Hart LF Braun 1B Fielder 3B McGehee SS Yuni 2B Wilson CF Gomez C Kottaras I guess I don't mind Yuni in the 6 hole against a lefty as much. That might be the worst bottom 5 of a lineup I have seen in a very long time.
  18. An artificially high BABIP will inflate both K/9 and BB/9 numbers, however it would not have any affect on the proposed K/PA and BB/PA numbers. If a ball in play is made into an out, that's an out that can no longer be made via strikeout. If this ball in play, however, is not made into an out, the pitcher will have another opportunity to record a K. Not a big difference either way though. Edit: Just imagine a defense so bad that it literally never makes an out on a ball in play. In this case, the only way to make outs for a pitcher would be via the K, so if BABIP = 1.000 (assuming no CS, pickoffs, etc), K/9 would have to be 27.
  19. My apology, Backupcatchers. My statement was overly harsh.
  20. So who do the Brewers turn to? The Twins series is sandwiched between two days off, but they'll need at least one spot start. DiFelice is stretched out, but the Rays most likely would play six lefty hitters against him, and I wouldn't trust him more than once through the order against righties anyways. How good is Narron against lefties? I've been very bearish on him in recent years, but I figure this might be a decent chance to try him out, simply for the lack of better options. Besides, he can hit pretty well (153 PA, .285/.333/.398/.732), so he'll fit in with Gallardo and Greinke. Otherwise who else is there? Butler is an obvious no, De La Cruz might be an option, and so could Rivas, but Rivas' peripherals scare me a bit.
  21. Herrera got Balfour'd. I'll say he either got Julio'd or Hererra'd. Balfour was a promising pitcher who had a few rough innings. Julio and Herrera really had no promise.
  22. Okay, I'll admit it...This is kind of funny. http://chzupnextinsports.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/funny-sports-pictures-variations-on-a-theme.jpg
  23. Well hot dog! We have a weiner! Anybody know how long we should expect Marcum to be out?

  25. This really isn't a good place for this, so I shouldn't have said anything. I'll just end this by saying Dam's statement has an element of truth, and I certainly respect his sentiment, but to dismiss economists as nonsensical due to the level of mathematics used in economics would be a big mistake.
