  1. Axford's career FIP of 2.18 in 101 innings is far better than Turnbow's even in his one good season. It's probably not all that unlikely for Axford to lose his control and become somewhat ineffective, but I don't think I'd ever bet on any player collapsing as epicly as Turnbow. I had my concerns at the start of the season when his fastball velocity was down, but he's obviously figured that out. Edit: For the record, Turnbow did not throw much harder than Axford. Turnbow's fastball average from 2005 to 2007 was about 95.4; Axford's over the last two years has been about 95. He may not have better raw "stuff", but he certainly can locate pitches better than Turnbow.
  2. I didn't realize Nishioka had been a ~.850 OPS guy the last few years in Japan. It's amazing how few of the Japanese signings see success in the majors leagues, and amazing how many of the superstars flop (Fukudome, Dice-K, Kaz Matsui, even Hideki Matsui to an extent). I know a lot of people reference Japan's two victories at the WBC as evidence of the skill level in the NPB, but given the lack of success of Japanese players in MLB, you have to wonder where the talent level truly is. My uneducated guess is that it's only slightly higher than AAA, and that even a top NPB team would win only 60 games in MLB. If Mauer can't stay healthy that contract could become an albatross pretty quickly. It's amazing how many of those huge contracts become regrettable.
  3. Yeah, with where the Brewers were at that time (a .500 team), I think it was worth the gamble to give Parra a chance. In hindsight, they certainly would have been better off spending the $10 million on Looper/Davis on somebody else. I honestly didn't realize Villanueva's numbers were as good as they were. One thing that is pretty concerning about Villa as a starter is his splits for 1st/2nd/3rd time facing a hitter. Most pitchers struggle more when facing a hitter the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time, but Villa's splits are pretty extreme. 1st: .297/.375/.672 (tOPS+ 86) 2nd: .346/.473/.818 (tOPS+ 126) 3rd: .369/.589/.958 (tOPS+ 161)
  4. This guy is gold. We need to resurrect the T. Plush thread or start a new sticky/designated thread for T. Plush interviews, articles, etc. What an awesome guy.
  5. Some jerk broke into our new car today and stole our three year old Garmin. Front window smashed, scratch on the door frame all for a used Garmin that will net $50-$60 on ebay. Something tells me they're not terribly intelligent, as they left a $200 lacrosse stick in the back seat.
  6. They were the double play combo when the O's had their epic losing streak to start the 1988 season. That's still pretty neat. Being a hockey fan (and Canucks fan) I love watching the Sedin twins play on the same line and I love the story of the Sutters (there were 5 of them who made the NHL, 1 who didn't, poor guy). I'm cheering for Pudge Rodriguez to cling to a backup catcher job long enough to play with his son, Ivan (Dereck), who was drafted in the 6th round by the Twins. On a slight tangent, Pudge is a great player. Total stud.
  7. Since when has not being able to play SS prevented a player from playing SS? That would be a neat DP combo. Has there ever been a pair of brothers to play 2B-SS for the same team?
  8. It would have been painful to lose to the AAA Twins, so this is a really nice win to have in the bag. If Pittsburgh loses today, the Brewers will be up 3 on STL, up 4 on PIT, up 4 on CIN, and up 12+ on CHI and HOU. I've said it before and I'll say it again: If the Brewers can get out of interleague play ahead of the Cardinals and Reds, they are in great shape to take the division. Here's to hoping they're more than a couple games ahead by the end of interleague play.
  9. I'm not entirely sure that lineup is much better than AAA Nashville. I don't actually recall ever seeing a lineup that bad this late in the season, even including Sunday b-lineups.
  10. They want him gone yesterday. Royal Review went on a pretty good rant about Yost the other day. This sounds like Brewers fans around 2005: " Honestly, if you want to be jaded about it, none of this matters in 2011. Pena sucks, Maier sucks, Dyson is a toy, Kila sucks, the 2011 Royals suck. Go that direction if you want. However, what happens when it is 2013 and the games actually matter? What happens when the prospects being misused aren't old Baird holdovers that everyone hates, but products of the Greatest Farm System Ever? What happens when those one or two extra wins the maanger is supposed to provide turn into one or two extra losses?"
  11. Wow, what a great crowd. This would be a huge series to sweep. The Cardinals are currently losing to the Blue Jays 5-2 in the bottom of the 8th. Here's to hoping the Jays can hold on. Landon Donovan with a goal for the US to put them up 2-0 over Mexico in the Gold Cup final!
  12. GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great header from Bradley off the corner kick. I only get this game on Univision, and although I don't speak Spanish, I must say I enjoy the announcers.
  13. That's one of the worst HR's I've ever seen. For a decent outfielder, that's a routine fly out! At least both of Prince's inside the parkers were more fluke plays, rather than the result of bad defense. Hopefully Young isn't too badly hurt. Talk about adding injury to insult.
  14. I think the corn rows look terrible. Gotta go either Weeks style dreads or straight fro for a speedy outfielder. If Gomez played for New York, they would probably discuss the relationship between Gomez's hairstyle and his performance. I'm not sure whether or not this should be in blue...
  15. It shouldn't be a big deal to clear a spot on the 40 man roster for Green. I'd like to see Gamel get the call up for this series, because I still view him as a better hitter than Green. Give him a game or 2 at first and give Prince a rest. Kotsay's line is down to .234/.310/.281/.591. To be fair, it is a veteran-y <.600 OPS.
  16. Not even close. The ball beat Yuni by 10 feet. If Yuni is up with 2 out and no one on, I'd almost rather see him pop out than single, as it could bring him closer to being DFA'd. (/intentionally not in blue)
  17. 2B Rickie Weeks RF Corey Hart LF Ryan Braun 1B Prince Fielder 3B Casey McGehee SS Yuniesky Betancourt C Jonathan Lucroy CF Carlos Gomez RHP Yovani Gallardo Oh joy for Yuni-boy. Hopefully he can break out of his career-long slump.
  18. I don't think either 1 or 3 is bad. I wouldn't complain if Roenicke did either of those things. The intentional walk was stupid, but not as bad as it seems on the surface because in Bautista's case, there is really a reverse platoon effect if anything (2010: 175 wRC+ vs. RHP, 124 wRC+ vs. LHP; only ~125 PA's vs. lefties, but I don't think he hits lefties any better than righties, possibly worse). It was stupid because Lind has killed righties this year (170 wRC+) and hit them well last year as well (122 wRC+). I would have been annoyed with Roenicke for this one, but it's not quite laughably stupid.
  19. Last night, the Nationals blew three saves but were still able to beat the White Sox in 14 innings, 9-5.
  20. I won't complain about Kottaras getting the start tonight simply because I don't want to see Lucroy get overworked in his young career.
  21. I'm not opposed to trading Kottaras and giving Rivera a shot, but I don't think San Francisco is a great trading match for the Brewers when it comes to Kottaras. If they're willing to overpay then it might work, of course.
  22. Jose Bautista is moving back to 3B. I guess that's what happens when Jayson Nix and E5win Encarnacion are your third baseman.
  23. I may have just found my new favorite beer for 95 degree, humid summer nights: 1809 Berliner Weisse. It has a little bit of a barnyard lacto funky nose but nothing too powerful. What I love is the great tart bite on the finish; it's dry, tart, and incredibly refreshing. Unfortunately, it's about $6 for a 500 ml bottle.
  24. Wily Mo Pena played for the D-Backs last night. This season in AAA, he's put together a line of .363/.439/.726. He's pretty much the definition of a AAAA player at this point.
