  1. Rluz, could you point me to a study about the predictive power of the MLE models? I'd be interested in reading up on that. Generally, I agree with the sentiment that MLE's are a fun toy which at best paint a rough picture of what to expect in the majors. I'll emphasize the "fun toy" part of that sentence.
  2. Is Latroy Hawkins feeling some nagging injury or something? He hasn't pitched since June 7 and he has only thrown 2 innings in June.
  3. At this point, I think that's a pretty fair criticism of Melvin. As GM, he needs to call the shots and tell Roenicke that some of these things are absolutely not acceptable. I do think we'll see some changes soon.
  4. Well, that was actually a really pretty goal by LaPierre, great pass by Sedin. Schneider looked very solid tonight. I have to wonder how much consideration he'll be given to start game 7. Starting Luongo just feels like playing with fire to me; one goal gets past the guy and he's a train wreck. As a hockey fan, I'm just happy to have game 7! If I weren't a Canucks fan, I'd be even more excited about the game.
  5. Perhaps they would have been able to pick up more than 4 hits if both Kotsay and Nieves were not in the lineup. It's absolutely not Roenicke's fault that Rickie went 0 for 4, or that McGehee has fallen off a cliff. Those things are not under his control. Roenicke's job is to put the best team on the field, and he failed to do that tonight.
  6. You're right, I should not have said he has no idea how to run a baseball team. I should have said he has almost no idea how to run a baseball team, and I don't see how anyone who followed tonight's game can possibly argue with that. edit: typo
  7. All I can say is that if Ned Yost made these same decisions, everybody would be calling for him to be fired. As far as I'm concerned, Roenicke is lucky to have such a talented team, if this guy had been put in charge of the Pirates he'd last less than a year.
  8. You still have yet to give an example. Roenicke is part of a large organization. To attribute the team's success to him is entirely arbitrary.
  9. 8 lbs 7 oz. or 3 oz larger than the Cubs CF tonight. 135 oz. This could be close! If Nieves goes 0-2 I think he'll be just above 135. Can Noah play shortstop?
  10. So because the club has succeeded in spite of Roenicke's poor management, he's a good manager? What does Roenicke have to do with the fact that the Brewers have two of the biggest sluggers in the game as well as three top notch starting pitchers, etc? What has he actually done to make you believe he is an intelligent manager, or even a competent one?
  11. Are we? What has he shown us to believe he understands how to run a team?
  12. I'm taking the over vs. Yuni's .OPS. How about weight in ounces vs. Nieves' batting average? I'll take the over against Nieves' batting average.
  13. Why did they just run a squeeze play in the fifth inning of a game on a 3-1 count against a pitcher who isn't throwing strikes? Why is Kotsay starting in CF again? Quite frankly I think Roenicke has absolutely no understanding of how to manage a baseball team. I thought he had gotten better over these past few games, but then he goes back to Kotsay and squeeze plays like this. I'll leave him at a D grade for now, simply because the team is winning, and I'll give the players the benefit of the doubt and say that playing for Roenicke is somehow helping them perform.
  14. But Yuniesky Betancourt and Randy Wolf really enjoyed the that debacle. That's what matters.
  15. Did Todd Coffey eat David Eckstein? He looks huge.
  16. Two more HORRIBLE goals from Luongo. I don't think I've ever seen a goalie play this poorly in three games of a Stanley Cup Final. He better get it together before game 7 in Vancouver. It's like this team turns its collective brain off when they get into Boston. Boston ought to just start rifling shots at Luongo. One more and Schneider needs to be brought in. Edit: What a joke.
  17. Nieves is doing pretty well if he only makes 1 out in an at-bat. Betancourt is doing pretty well if he sees more than 1 pitch in an at-bat.
  18. Ouch. Kotsay in CF again. That's all I'll say about the lineup. Even with the Cubs being horrendously awful this year, these games are always a blast. As far as I'm concerned, the Cubs are the division leaders for the next four nights, Aramis Ramirez is still good at baseball, and Alfonso Soriano is not a bionic man. GO CREW!
  19. I'd never park on Dempster St, that sounds like home run ball through the windshield territory.
  20. I think we already dodged the bullet with McGehee. After the start of this season I see it as highly unlikely for Melvin to offer McGehee a long term deal, especially with both Gamel and Greene waiting in the wings.
  21. I don't think a bake sale would work. Fielder would eat all the cookies. Well, with Prince in $35MM debt to the club for the cookies, he may feel the most fiscally prudent move is to sign with the club at a discounted rate.
  22. So long as one of the divisions is Milwaukee, Houston, Pittsburgh, Washington, and Baltimore I'll be happy.
  23. It's great to see Green mashing the way he is. By tomorrow morning his line will be pretty similar to Mat Gamel's. I'm still not too fond of the idea of rushing him. I'm hoping he'll be able to stay in AAA this year for most of the rest of this season, although of course this may depend on McGehee rebounding a bit.
  24. Bake sale. Sell magic brownies to Scott Boras. Six years, $3MM. Done deal.
  25. Enjoying myself on gatewayredbirds.com "Gomez has the IQ of a 4 year old.." "Just about everything coming up Brewers in this series." - after the Gomez catch. "The Brewers better be wearing the same jerseys tomorrow, otherwise we'll all know that they have disrespectfully untucked them." - after yesterday's game. "The Brewers aren't going to play any better, but we could get a lot better. Lots and lots of season left." Uhh...Lance Berkman... "I don't support Carpenter's recent (past year or twos') "competitive" attitude."
