  1. The MLBPA needs to yank their collective heads out of their arse & take a look at the real world....there's a little something called a RECESSION happening with little hope of it ending anytime soon.... & it's hurting everyone except the priviledged few who have gigantic guaranteed contracts....
  2. Melvin has too big of an ego to simply release Hart..... Melvin dropped the ball by not conducting a complete & thorough investigation before offering Hart arbitration....simply not good business especially for a small market ball club
  3. this is the classic hometown discount.... ....no way Prince's agent would do this for the Brewers
  4. +1 on Braggs ....although he had a couple of decent years in the bigs he never came close to meeting his expectations.... David Green..... he was THE MAN in all minor leagues but never lived up to the hype.... although he was one of the key figures in that huge trade with the Cardinals that landed Ted Simmons & more
  5. Glavine is a whiny little piss-ant 1) maybe the Braves were trying to trade him? never know.... 2) he didn't hesitate to leave the ATL for the Mets via free agency for a marginal increase over the Braves offer ....and his logic was "New York is a better place to raise my family" ....are you kidding me! 3)as the leader of the players union, Glavine was never shy to play the "it's a business" card ....well Tommy, you wanted it & you got it! ....definitely my least favorite Brave, although the "chicks dig the long ball" commercials he did with Maddox were cool
  6. Don't underestimate Glaus.... It's easy to tear him down because he missed nearly all of '09 with injury but in '08 with the Cards he hit .270/.372/.483 with 27 & 99 ...and he brings a career OBS of .856..... at 33 there's no reason he shouldn't return to form...... plus the Braves are reknown for their meticulous scouting so chances are good that he's healthy....
  7. once again would you give up that package of players for a one-year rental?????? ....the Yankees could afford to do that....the Brewers can't btw...I like MacGhee a lot but how would the Braves use him? ....IMHO I like Vizcaino better than any Brewers' pitching prospect you mentioned
  8. Do you really think the Brewers could of offered a package as good as the Yankees? 1) The Braves wanted salary relief so they could pursue a major free agent bat....they gained $9 - $10 million in salary relief...Cabrera is still relatively cheap with a projected 2010 salary of about $2 million ....I don't see Cabrera as much more than a platoon player in the Braves plans 2) Vizcaino was the Yanks top rated pitching prospect & #3 overall....would the Brewers be willing to trade that kind of prospect, assuming they had a young, hard throwing pitching prospect the Braves wanted, for a one-year rental?????? ....frankly the Brewers are lacking in top rated pitching prospects & can't afford to deal them away 3) Dunn is a 24 year old southpaw who throws 96-97 & has the highest rated slider in the Yankees farm system per Baseball America....sounds like a solid prospect to me.... ....the reality is that this economy is hitting many teams hard making it hard to move high salaried players
  9. pingman, Since Cabrera is a switch hitter and better from the right side and figures to play RF, I would think the Braves could expand their search for another bat to include both RH and LH hitters. Which begs the question why not just bring back Adam LaRoche? Good observation JB ....IMHO the Braves will platoon Cabrera & Diaz in LF....AND use Cabrera in RF against tough southpaws until Jason Heyward gets his bearings....Cabrera could also spell McLouth in CF should he need a rest.... the unknown is will Heyward be ready coming out of spring training? or will the Braves let him play against AAA pitching for 4-6 weeks before bringing him to the majors (much like how they handled Hanson last year) LaRoche? .....he recently demanded 3 years & $31 million or something like that....the Braves only want a short term deal (at less $$$) to bridge the time until Freddie Freeman is ready..... the latest rumor is the Braves want to bring DeRosa back to the ATL ....he could play 1B & also some 3B when Chipper needs a day or 15 off.... personally I'd prefer to bring 'Roche back for two years but I'm not Frank Wren or Bobby Cox.... ....another target appears to be Xavier Nady
  10. Braves fan (1a) & Brewers fan (1b) weighing in on this trade.... From the Braves perspective I'm not happy....didn't get a much needed power hitter in return....however, this move gives the Braves some wiggle room under their salary budget to make a move for a couple of bats (Nady & DeRosa????) ....Arodys Vizcaino at 19 is the Yanks #3 prospect (and top pitching prospect) per Baseball America so the Braves are stockpiling some quality arms.....Dunn has the best slider in the Yanks org per BA....he had good numbers in AAA & AA last season so he could be in the mix for the last bullpen spot although I'm not counting on that This is good news for the Brewers because it gets Vazquez out of the NL .... I still like the Braves rotation of Jurrjens, Hudson, Hanson, Lowe & Kawakami....hard to beat that!!!! ....and a bullpen of Wagner, Saito, Moylan, Medlen, O'Flaherty should be one of the best in the NL too.....if Chipper can stay healthy this is a dangerous team
  11. I can't see the Braves making your proposed move, although it is interesting.... After they trade Lowe (or Vazquez), Medlen will be their backup plan should one of their starters get injured.... he's probably a setup man in their bullpen for now but many Braves fans think he's being groomed to be their closer of the future.... Things could change though especially if they fail to land a 1B before spring traing....
  12. The Braves may need to remove Reyes from their 40-man roster to make room for future additions....I agree that the Brewers could get him on the cheap.... he could be a diamond-in-the-rough if Peterson could work his magic with Reyes.... IMHO he's alot like Parra....(although his stuff isn't as electic as Manny's it's still good enough)....like Parra he doesn't trust his stuff & nibbles too much which results in high pitch counts....all he needs is a pitching coach to convince him to just throw strikes
  13. Braves fan weighing in....JoJo Reyes is still young but is running out of options in Atlanta....good stuff but he hasn't put it together in the majors, most likely due to location issues... if he doesn't get it going soon he may be labeled "AAAA" ....he'll probably start 2010 in AAA & is still a guy to keep an eye on Johnson tried to play thru a wrist injury & it just screwed his stats....he's a good hitter but a below average 2B....his problem is that he's never hit well as a part-time player but when he can be penciled into a lineup everyday he does just fine....
  14. build thru the farm system....via the draft & international free agents....focus on projectable pitching prospects, especially high school kids but then you need volume.....invest heavily in scouting & minor league development ...stock pile pitching prospects in your system then trade the excess to fill holes in your everyday lineup ....when the above fails, then free agency... Sincerely, The Atlanta Braves (I'd put the Twins in that category too but more because of their position players than pitching)
  15. IMHO Church would be a quality 4th OF but not at his projected salary
  16. I think it's a damn fine idea to keep 3 catchers.... It gives the manager flexibility to pinch hit or pinch run....there were many times in past couple of years where I would of liked to have seen Rivera as a pinch hitter but the manager couldn't do so because he was the only catcher on the bench
  17. The Braves tendered arby to Soriano & Mike Gonzalez (both type A)....so they'll gain some 1st round picks when those two cats sign elsewhere, and they will for bigger $$$$ than Wagner Soriano was never as good as his stats....he seemed to blow too many clutch saves for my taste....plus he & Gonzalez have a history of injuries too Wagner threw the crap out of the ball in September.....1.72 era & 14.94 k's per 9 innings as proof ....as a longtime Braves fan I like this signing....bullpen is shaping up nicely with Moylan, Medlen (he's going to bust out in 2010) & O'Flaherty
  18. I'm not surprised.... What this shows is twofold: 1) the budget is tight.....there's $$$$ to get 2 starters but it will be tight....can't afford to be raped by the arbitration system 2) the arbitration is a total pooch-screw for the ball clubs.... the chances of players going to an arbitration hearing will probably be higher is this economy & any way you look at it the club will not get the results it wants
  19. the point is you need to trade major league ready pitching prospects, like Bucholtz for example, to get an ace like Holliday.... unfortunately the Brewers don't have those kind of prospects
  20. Very good news..... the Brewers have not done very well with Latin American free agents & a quick peek at the BA top 30 list proves this point..... it takes money but it's critical to find the best 16 & 17 year old prospects then develop them ....just can't rely on the draft alone
  21. It's now or never of Capuano..... ....worst case scenario has Capuano & Halama stealing opportunities for legit prospects that need the AAA innings, then they have no chance of helping the Brewers
  22. I disagree....if the team can stockpile 2B, or any other position for that matter, it gives the organization ammunition for trades Another stat I like about Ferris is that he rarely strikes out....
  23. wait until Johnson is non-tendered, then snap him up at a more affordale salary.... I've always been a big fan of Kelly Johnson.... he could be a solid utility player; he played LF & 2B for the Braves ....and in Braves system he started out as a SS but also played 3B.... love that short stroke, dude can rake....just needs a change of scenery
  24. keep in mind that Baseball America is biased toward "tools" & "projectability".....the anti Billy Beene, if you will.....
