  1. I always liked Yost in Milwaukee. His management of the roster (playing backups regularly), bullpen, and rotation were brilliant. I always liked his philosophies on pitching (with Maddux) where: 1) if you get a reliever up in the game, try to get him into the game 2) Give your starter the benefit of the doubt and let him try to go an extra inning (as long as pitch counts are fine) It seemed that 90% of the complaints regarding his bullpen management were later found to be bunk in the post-game pressers when we found out that pitchers were unavailable. I'm glad to see Ned having success in KC. SI once created a stat that found that Ned produced more wins for the team than nearly every manager in the majors. I remember questioning the stat, but it surrounded Ned with the best managers in the game. I always loved his enthusiasm and passion
  2. I'd take two years of Buehrle for Weeks and some cash. He's a veteran lefty and would benefit from a return to a) the midwest and b) the NL
  3. I think people are forgetting just how great Gindl has been in the minors. He has a Gamel-like track-record--much better than Taylor Green or Schafer. Davis has been very good, but Gindl can play more positions and is left-handed. I would prefer to have a pseudo-platoon with Davis and Gindl.
  4. I've never gotten why some people douse their food with salt. The only thing I've ever salted was Culvers french fries, and that's because they ALWAYS need it.
  5. What about the seasons where we used out backups at dh? Didn't Jesse Levis DH a bunch one year?
  6. I'm with Monty. I don't see us trying to trade Ramirez unless it's to free up salary. I would imagine we'll try to package Weeks, Aoki, and a reliever for an overpriced starting pitcher with bounce-back potential and in a walk-year. I'd be interested in bringing back Hart on a cheap incentive-laiden deal. I'd consider Gamel the utility IF now that he's back in baseball drills. Green will likely be in AAA. Halton will be in AAA playing all over. Gindl belongs in the majors, but either a big league pseudo-platoon or AAA starter seems likely. Francisco needs to lose 30-40 lbs, then I'll talk about bringing him back.
  7. Nate, thanks for finding the rules. I think we've understood all of those. The only one new to me is the rule about 45-days off DL. What I was saying is that the teams bid by position and all have 1-2 priority positions. Players not at priority positions often play out-of-position (Weeks, Hart, Nelson, Napoli, are a bunch that I remember from when I worked in the league). I guess if we're sending Haniger, RF or CF must be our priority position.
  8. I'm missing something...who is our priority position player? Is it Haniger? Sounds like Rogers is playing 1b/dh/OF. Who will be the last pitcher? Could it be they are holding out hope for one of the aforementioned injured pitchers?
  9. I'm betting the Cards decide to convert Axford to the rotation for next year, he goes 17-4. Just like Wainright, Bottenfield, Looper, etc, he'll be a good starter.
  10. He's great for AA or aaa depth. Sometimes it's good to have guys like him or mike Jones around to keep others grounded. I'd gladly give him a aaa contract and non-roster invite to spring training. Heck, isn't he younger than Ax, Henderson, and Kintzler were when we signed them off the scrap heap?
  11. I still haven't heard a scouting report on Heckathorn. In college he threw 95, in the pros he threw 88-89 with no secondary pitches. Has he improved those this year?

  13. I agree on your first 4. I differ on Thornburg. I haven't been impressed with his command. When he throws strikes, they always seem to miss the target by a foot or more. As a reliever I think he could probably get away with it more...at least until his command approves. For the 5th starter (not in any order), we have Gorzy, Thornburg, Burgos, Nelson, Figaro, Hand, and Fiers. I'd also actively try to shop Weeks for a bad contract pitcher in his walk-year. Gennett's offense has shown me enough and his D is superior to Rickie. Of those, I kind of hope Fiers or Nelson gets the job. Not to get off-topic, but the pen would be: Closer- Henderson Setup- Kintzler and Wooten Lhp-Gorzy 7th inning-Badenhop and hand Long guy- Thornburg
  14. I would protect Morris, Nelson, Prince (leave him on, since no other shortstops for depth), kentrail Davis, d'vontrey Richardson, and possibly Arnett, Harvey, or Cravy depending on AFL results. If I were from another team I'd eye up relievers, Jason Rogers, nick shaw, Etc. To clear room I'd consider trading Aoki, trying to acquire a bad salary for Weeks, non-tendering Axford if he won't take a paycut, trading Kintzler (injury-risk), non-tendering Francisco, letting Gonzalez and Yuni walk, non-tendering Rogers (offer invite to camp and $100k salary), and outrighting Prince, Bucci, Halton, and Lalli

  16. something about seeing Jalen Harris have hit avg approaching .300 makes me smile. I really hope the utility infielder can build on his solid season and earn a starting job somewhere next year. It would be really inspirational for so many if he made the big leagues
  17. at this point Gindl and Davis have the minor league resume and big league potential to deserve playing time. Dealing Aoki, putting Braun in RF, and letting Davis and Gindl split in LF makes sense. Given Braun and Gomez's inevitable nagging injuries, we could definitely get both about 350 plate appearances. Schafer should be able to get 150+ as well with starts or as a ph and defensive replacement
  18. Rogers with a solid outing tonight. Wonder if he'll get a bullpen look in sept to audition. Hopefully the velocity has been better
  19. Saw Edinson Volquez was DFA'd. I'd definitely take a chance on him. He's still recovering from arm surgery, has a great arm, has had success, and is only 30. He'd be a power arm that could help us next year. Kind of reminds me of when we got Pete Harnisch late in a year and he threw well. Unfortunately we let him go and he had a nice run with the Reds. Hideo nomo as well. At the very least, he could be a David Weathers. Weathers was awful til we put him in the pen and he wound up having a very good career
  20. Bombers, how would that get us an ace? Aoki, Morris, and Thornburg might get us a very good pitcher, but no ace. Our rotation is currently Lohse, Gallardo, Peralta, Estrada, and Gorzy for next year. That's not counting Nelson, Fiers, Thornburg, Nelson, etc as options. I'd say that unless we can add another Lohse or Wolf-type, we're going to battle with what we have. I'd consider trading Aoki. I'd consider dealing Kintzler and Badenhop. Prince is playing tons of SS lately, so expect him to join Bianchi on the bench. What happens with Weeks? Is there any starting pitcher with a terrible 2014 contract we can trade him for?
  21. brew city baseball, just curious why Braun is different from Bonds and McGwire? Bonds had many injury problems, especially his back. It's remarkable that he went from injured a lot in his early 30s to fairly healthy in his latter years. As for McGwire, he has lots of injuries to--I think--his feet. Same thing. They may very well have used substances to help recover from chronic problems
  22. I notice Josh Prince has been playing a lot of SS lately. I wonder if they're trying to check out his viability as a backup for next year
  23. wow that's pretty powerful. Thanks Mass (and whoever passed it along). My thoughts go out to Nate and family.
  24. paul, plenty of top pitchers have started out in the bullpen. Thornburg's command looks pretty bad in most outings. He throws strikes, but the catcher's mitt usually moves by a foot. As for Gomez and Braun, we should play them over Davis and Schafer. They're superior players. I'm just glad we have depth now. Gennett vs Weeks has been debated over and over. To think Ron hates rookies is stupid. Yost was great for developing/playing kids. Ron is fine and supportive. Macha was a disaster. I still can't believe he played Hall over Gamel at 3b.
  25. I'm not sold on Heckathorn. The guy threw BP nearly every outing in A+ and AA. Unless I start reading about his college velocity returning or him developing a second pitch, I won't be sold. Sanchez deserves it more than him
