  1. this isn't news. We knew when he signed that there would be language that prevented him from being offered arbitration. Great reporting by looking at stories from January 2012.
  2. Vegas, you're remembering last year's knee surgery.
  3. I like the move. Why freak? We've always done well in these bullpen games. Calling up a player could cost more than $30,000 for one outing. We have a rested bullpen, so a bullpen day makes sense.
  4. Can't believe they'll be playing in Missoula today. I'm two hours north and we've had torrential downpours for about 24 hours now.
  5. djoctagone, what could we get for Halton?
  6. if John has low value, then we should keep him. We could offer him $4.5 million in arbitration for next year (10% cut that's allowed). He's had very good numbers for 2 months now
  7. that's it! Yonki Hernandez. Was hoping that with time his OBP skills would translate in the states.
  8. minigoon, I love the 1st half writeup for AA. I enjoyed seeing the Brewers' rankings among league leaders, the stronger numbers, etc. Love the great work and would love to see more analysis like this.
  9. wasn't there a fast IF/OF from DSL that played in Maryvale last year? I want to say Hernandez.
  10. we've now won 4 of 5 series. We're not back into the division, but if we had a nice stretch of winning 15 of 17, including some divisional wins, that would be a huge help. in 2011 we weren't in first at this point, and people were declaring that we should sell everything.
  11. 3and2fastball, it's possible you're right. But what makes you think he'll learn to walk in the majors when he didn't in the minors?
  12. Gindl deserves a shot. I really thought he'd be the 5th OF this spring to make the team. He has never really had a bad year in the minors (2012 was injury-plagued, but also a repeat year of AAA). He's a lefty with defense, OBP, and power
  13. I'd like something like the NFL's draft compensation system where they compare players lost and signed, irregardless of whether a tender was offered. Any team that has a net loss of talent would then acquire compensatory draft picks
  14. homer, I never said that's why I don't like him as a prospect. First of all, I was saying he doesn't deserve to be in the big leagues now. Secondly, I was stating I feel he's a marginal prospect (as I've said for over a year now). That's not saying I don't like him as a prospect. It's just saying that I view him like Gamel and Green at this point in time. my bigger question is if Gindl will ever get a shot.
  15. Fair enough TheCrew. Although I always thought it was Maddux that brought that high heater call to the game plan, he wanted our pitchers primarily working down and away, but he also loved calling for high cheese, especially in curveball counts. Of course, it could have been more Moeller, or a combination of them. Other catchers in the period also used the high cheese for K's
  16. I'm not saying it will be. But he's averaging more Innings per start than Ben did with the same AA WHIP. If he starts to sprinkle in that 94-95 mph 4-seamer from college, we could see a jump in k's
  17. interesting to note that Jungmann's stats in the minors aren't that dissimilar than Ben Sheets. Given the recent push for hitters to focus on OBP and working the count, I'm sure Jungmann faces a tougher league. Also interesting because early in Sheets' career (and throughout the minors) he was throwing exclusively 2-seamers to work on pitch efficiency and going deeper in games. That's why in 2001-03 we often saw him throwing 90-92 mph. Then in 2004 he magically jumped to 96+. His fastball was the a 4-seamer and would be his best (strikeout) pitch for the remainder of his career with milwaukee
  18. Soup, don't forget Morris looked lost at the plate in spring training and April. He had a shot to play his way onto the roster and didn't. I still don't think he's more than a marginal prospect, so I'd like him in aaa as long as possible
  19. Has any team tried signing him as an undrafted free agent (mike Adams and vinny rottino come to mind)?
  20. Gregmag, don't forget that Corey Hart was drafted as a SS, and Kenny Rogers players shortstop in HS despite being lefty
  21. The 'satche, it's really simple. Odds are he won't make the big leagues, but you can never have too many offensive-minded shortstops. He may switch positions, but even of he sticks at SS, we likely won't see him in Milwaukee for 5-6 Yeats. Segura could be gone, Arcia could be traded (see Escobar and Hardy)
  22. Djoctagon, My guess is simple cost. I've been told by players that per the CBA, players get 1st class tickets. To call up a position player, send him down, and recall a pitcher in 4 days requires 3 first class tickets purchased at the worst possible time. While it sounds cheap, saving $4-5k by skipping the position player is more cost-effective as a business. Plus it's all a moot point with Thornburg already pitching
  23. I will say that I like his throwing motion to 1b a whole lot more than Weeks. Rickie's lazy all-arms throws (Brandon Phillips does this too) can be annoying. If he can cover first adequately on bunts and if he can field balls to his right, then he's superior to Weeks defensively
  24. oops, I meant to write 72 or 90, not 54. But yeah, I could see it. I would like to see a focus on hitters early, with pitchers scattered in rounds 4-10. Also the system could use some lefty bats. Don't want to draft for need, but when all things are equal, let's go with it.
  25. hmmm, a possible Rogers platoon with Morris?
