  1. doctor. doctor. --spies like us
  2. Hey all, the movie quote thread reminded me of another set of movies....hidden sleepers. That is, movies I find hilarious but most haven't seen. These aren't the classic comedies, but movies I enjoy Real Men Death to Smoochie
  3. also is Andy Hillis following the Michael Fiers plan? college starter, first year striking out a ton in rookie ball as reliever
  4. One of our forgotten prospects is Brooks Hall. He's having an okay year at a high level. I think they must be really keeping his IP down. Also interesting that Heckathorn managed to pitch well in A and AAA, but threw BP every few days in A+ and AA. I wonder if the college velocity is back
  5. I agree with some of Brad's rankings and thoughts. I'd emphasize Arcia's outstanding BB:K ratio. We haven't seen that since Michael Brantley. I don't see why Morris deserves a Sept call-up. I am not high on Francisco (3TO meets Kung Fu Panda), but his numbers are at least worth considering for next year. Morris seems to need another season in AAA which is nothing to worry about. Caleb Gindl spent 3 years in AAA and he deserved the majors in his first year. Taylor Green deserves AAA but could re-establish himself. Some people think that once a guy is in AAA, teams are almost being cruel as they hold them back. However I view AAA as a great spot to store talent that needs finishing. Heck, Nelson Cruz needed how many AAA seasons?
  6. seriously, his "old friend" is upset he didn't get paid. These mooches are the downfall of many pro athletes
  7. this is okay, but why are they copying the NFL's lousy system? Nobody likes the drama of "should the coach use the challenge." All people care about is getting calls right.
  8. just curious logan, but what vet is playing over a better young guy? Aoki? Francisco?
  9. do we know what Clint Coulter's injuries were that he was sent to Az for rehab and to play part time? He was supposed to play everyday in Helena, but then he got hurt and has played inconsistently for AZ.
  10. Gamel compares favorably to Overbay based on minor league production. He should hit, and hit well. People who are high on Green, Gennett, Gindl, Davis, etc, should all be high on Gamel as he's had the best production of them all
  11. I tried laptops and netbooks, craving something durable, powerful, and light-weight. I've had this perfect laptop for 3 years now and it's still going fine. It's the MacBook Air 11.1" (my first and only Mac) I think the number one thing I've learned is that a SSD is a must. My work computer (a mac) is brand new and very slow to load in the morning. It doesn't wake like the SSD laptop does. I've been fine now without Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint for 3 years. Openoffice is easier to use. I did purchase Numbers (Mac's excel) and I love that I can work on my phone, ipad, and laptop via icloud. Every laptop I had before the Air would tend to slow down after 4-6 months. People would tell me it was bloatware/crapware, but I put nothing on the netbook, just watched it slow to a snail's pace in 2-3 months.
  12. Now 1 game over not counting May. Gaining ground on the cubs
  13. May was brutal as we continued without Hart (but hoped he'd return), Braun got injured (performed fine though except for homers), Ramirez limped along, and pitchers got hurt left and right. Our record is awful, but subtracting May we are now a .500 team (44-44). Not sure why we struggled so badly in May. We lost 12 games but 1-2 runs. 6-22 in May was brutal. Even 12-16 and we'd be playing for .500.
  14. I think I'd consider next year a season of Hart and Gamel sharing time at 1b for both to get healthy. Morris needs AAA. It's funny, last night my thought was "it's too bad Aoki can't play 2b, cause that could solve lots of issues." If a spot were open, I'd like a Gindl/Davis platoon. I've long been high on Gindl and bearish on Morris (at least short-term). Glad to see him getting his chance
  15. I'd definitely keep him. He's been very good outside of 2 or 3 terrible outings. People that throw 97 with big curveballs don't grow on trees. I'd try to avoid the issue of his salary by offering him a 2-year $7 million deal, with incentives on games finished. He's old enough that he might take the guaranteed money. If he hits the market, he'll sign rather quickly. relievers can have lots of variability year-to-year. He's 30-years old (lots of good years left), has a career ERA+ of 122, and has 311 K's in 255 IP.
  16. doesn't matter right now since Narvy is staying in AAA and Estrada is starting tomorrow
  17. Remember, Nelson Cruz did get exposed in the high minors. Teams viewed him as being like Russell Branyan and passed multiple times on him. Really, we'll see with him. But we had success drafting other power guys (besides Walla)...hopefully he works out as he's been fun to follow
  18. Mass, isn't that likely because the Brewers' conversion of Zarraga to switch hitting 2 or so years ago? I can't imagine a players' SLG will go up when he switches from batting righty his whole life to batting primarily lefty.
  19. I'm sure the power/slg will return, but it's encouraging to see him getting hits and some walks
  20. Francisco because of his iffy play despite a long audition this year. I have Sanchez and Wooten definitely ranked ahead of him, but I could see why Prince and Green would be in jeopardy. Each has only had really 2 good years in the minors.
  21. Braun was clean in 2012, supposedly passing over 30 tests. So I would imagine he could have a huge year.
  22. My count shows 45 players right now (thanks to suspended or 60-day DL guys). Some guys whose spots might be in jeopardy include: Nick Bucci Michael Olmsted Mark Rogers Mike Gonzalez (likely dealt in August) Santo Manzanillo Miguel De Los Santos Yuni Betancourt (thank goodness) Juan Francisco Mat Gamel Sean Halton Corey Hart (free agent) Blake Lalli That would get us down to 33. However, I think Gamel is better than most free agent bench players we can find. If Rogers or any others show us something in the next 2 months, they could be retained. So we might have plenty of room to add the guys we need to this off-season.
  23. Leal can look to Jorge Lopez for how to turn it around.
  24. I think some are right about this team. Think about this: LF--we got one month out of a healthy Braun CF--already a career year RF--another very solid year (And cheap, too!) 3b--never healthy SS--Career year 2b--shouldn't be Rickie's to lose anymore....been awful since ankle injury 1b--0 games played by starter, backup, or backup-to-the-backup c--career year? If some of the young guys hold onto their performance and we get even mild bounceback years from 1b, 2b, 3b, and LF, then this is an NL-leading offense. My boy Gindl is thriving, Schafer is more than competent, and even Khris Davis is getting a look. Bianchi looks a solid bench player, along with Maldonado, Gamel, etc that's a very good bench Peralta is having a good season despite many lumps, and hopefully will be ready to bust out next year. Hand looks like a legit long-reliever/5th starter. Figaro looks solid. With Yo, Lohse, and Peralta leading the rotation, hopefully 2 of Hand, Estrada (remember him?), Narveson, Gorzy, Thornburg, and Nelson can plug rotation holes. The pen is hard-throwing and nasty.
  25. fondy, I'm with you on Rogers. I'm treating him like I did Mike Jones...loved seeing his name in boxscores. Hopefully this year is a learning year and he can be a part of us next year. He needs to be throwing 94+ though. As for the young guys, I agree. I don't mind taking college bats, but our track record with college pitching has always been poor. Plus, when was the last time we had a pitcher (besides Fiers) have an awesome debut?
