  1. Great news on signings, but I feel bad for RJ Johnson. There was an article at the time regarding how the Brewers were going to let him play both ways, then he got hurt. Best of luck in the Indy leagues
  2. Actually, there were numerous reports in the minors of Brett Lawrie not playing hard. There were a number of occasions his manager yanked him out of games for not running hard or playing hard. The Brewers covered these stories up, but if you search Brewerfan, the reports were there.
  3. Adam, you do know that prospect trades almost always work out with one winner....the team that acquired the star.
  4. Reed having a much better debut in Brevard County with 2 hits and a walk
  5. I'm with Toby. They'll spend it all and might even go over...not enough to lose picks, but perhaps enough to get taxed. The encouraging thing is that a number of the players have been quoted as saying that they want to sign right away because the minor league bonus isn't where the money is. Sounds like Melvin is brainwashing them in a good way. Narwhalattack, I don't know how long you've followed the draft, but you'll realize that the Brewers rarely draft the guys we like. We all become attached to players we read about. My big "one that got away" was I wanted us to take Brett Anderson. At least I can be thrilled he got to the big leagues. I also have to say I agree with Greinke's comment that we should draft more hitters, fewer pitchers. If we get hitters to AAA, we can always trade them for pitching. This appears to be out 6th or 7th very pitcher heavy draft in a row. I would personally draft more SS/3b-types, fewer CF's, fewer college pitchers, more 1b/corner OFs and fewer catchers. That's why I like the first few rounds today.
  6. Oldcity, I wasn't trying to advocate that. I think that's a 60 win rotation at best. I was just saying that it doesn't hurt to keep working him as a starter for now. He's also a candidate where he could do a 1-2 year bullpen stint, refine mechanics, gain success, and be healthy. Then make the rotation transition. I like that for guys that struggle with command at times and lesser prospects. It's also happened with some serious talent recently--Feliz, Wilson, Santana, Liriano, Wainwright, etc
  7. Buck Farmer....sounds like a fun name. mlb.com's report makes him sound good for a 15th rounder...was he hurt?
  8. interesting to see a cadet drafted. I believe they can leave without penalty before their junior year. As a draft eligible sophomore he could be an interesting pick
  9. i plan on trying to get to some Helena games this summer. Missoula is much closer, but Casper would kill any chance of going to games
  10. too bad Roache won't play this year, but I like that we were willing to take a chance on a rather refined, elite hitter. Can't wait till reports in the fall start trickling in. I could see us going pitcher in rounds 2 and 3, then back to position players. 5 consecutive fairly pitcher heavy drafts has really hurt our organizational hitting prospects. We need some more Drew Anderson, Brandon Katin, and Mike Fiers mid-rounders to work out and at least provide organizational depth
  11. Izturis is seems very good defensively, so I'm find with a 50-50 split if the rest of our offense can be near full strength
  12. thecrew, the only thing I can think of is poor infield conditions and Brandon Webb. His sinker produced groundballs that often bounced all over. some were called errors, many were ruled hits. At the time the PCL was known for poor infield conditions
  13. oldcity, Francouer was considered a can't miss prospect. They may be comparing him to the guy's tools, not his production
  14. Gallo or Eflin could be there in 10 picks still.
  15. narwhalattack, we got an elite power hitter. Lots of HS power pitchers left. We always take about 20 high ceiling HS pitchers, and there's plenty left
  16. gallo, roache, eflin would be fine
  17. Given the way the pirates have spent recently, they likely aren't afraid to pay some tax money for going over slot. They won't go high enough to give up draft picks
  18. It's foolish to sell right now. We're in 4th place...but that's merely 6.5 games back! 3.0 behind St. Louis and 3.5 behind Pittsburgh. We have about 12-15 games left against each of our division foes, 3 against the Twins, 3 Padres, etc. If we take care of business against the division rivals, then we'll be in great shape. Relax people!
  19. I think one thing that people are forgetting with the new draft rules is that it a player is drafted late in the first round and chooses to go to school, there isn't really a chance of trying to get redrafted for more money 3 years later. For a HS kid picked 27 they can expect roughly $1.65 million. If they go to college, there is a better chance that they'll drop in value than increase in value, and teams aren't likely to pay big bonuses to guys that drop in the coming years. So I think first and 2nd round HS kids will almost have to sign. Additionally, teams could be creative. Say we sign a kid to below slot, but then we give him a AAA contract. He'd be making thousands more per year. We could even give more money than that. Guarantee less upfront, but give more annually.
  20. I haven't looked in a while, but I would assume his avg is around the .223, his OBP is higher because he's taking tons of walks--likely linked to more playing time--and his slg is skewed by his first few weeks.
  21. Roache sounds like LaPorta in that he's an underrated prospect on draft day. Seager sounds like a left-handed JJ Hardy. Not great speed, but great instincts.
  22. rluzinski, I think a major difference between Suppan and Marcum is that Marcum has an elite pitch (changeup), Suppan had none. Highandtight, a coworker of mine would disagree. He played with Greinke in the minors and said he's seen few deliveries that were more max-effort, specifically citing how Greinke lets out a loud grunt on every pitch. Not trying to argue, but trying to point out what I heard in a conversation last month
  23. Nate, as much as I've hated this speculation...if we could get Komatsu back, I'd be happy! I miss his OBP
  24. Most likely he'll be in AZ next week to work out with the Helena squad, or perhaps he'll just meet them in Montana. They did this before with Nick Bucci. Instead of promoting an A+ OF, they probably are expecting someone back soon (Brock K? Richardson?)
