  1. To be honest, this team should be good. Did we expect K-Rod to be among the worst setup men in baseball? Did we expect Veras to be a waste? Weeks was having a breakthrough last year in the 1st half...did anyone expect Weeks to be one of the worst hitters in MLB? Heck, Aoki rarely hits it out of the infield on fewer than 10 hops, and he's been more impressive than Weeks.
  2. Sacramento is sort pretty much a dump. All the A's fans live in Alameda county...not sure how moving to Sacramento would help them.
  3. The Blue Ribbon Panel suggested New York, New York, and Los Angeles as deserving the next 3 teams, population wise. Additionally, you have Portland with it's multi-phase stadium plan, Boston, Salt Lake City, Indianapolis, Nashville (look past the poor attendance in AAA...for an MLB club, could this city draw? it has beautiful summers, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Charlotte, etc. I really like the Montreal or Vancouver idea. Both are trendy fun cities that should be better with the much strong Canadian dollar than a decade ago (as was said before). Las Vegas had a chance....till the housing bubble burst. Of course at current growth rates, North Dakota might have the resources and the wealthy fan base due to the Bakken boom.
  4. Stache, the Brewers never gave up on Hardy. They saw his salary request being too high, the availability of a replacement, and his refusal to switch to 3b. In the end, they traded him for a cheap high ceiling CF in an era when we had no quality CF prospects. It obviously hasn't worked out great. They wouldn't have traded him had they foreseen the Greinke deal
  5. Paul, I don't care about IF/OF right now. We need bats. It's pathetic how our most exciting guys are Gindl (panned consistently by experts), Schafer (seems adequate, offensively), Morris (can't get on base), and Osuna and Arcia (rookie ball). We need some bats no matter where they play. We've had 4 or 5 pitcher heavy drafts, so this was a predictable problem. The good news is we could probably trade any of about 8 pitching prospects and get legit hitters in return
  6. Josh Prince starting at 3b tonight. I wonder if they are moving him the OF to gain him experience there, and then we'll later see him moved around all over and groomed as a super utility guy. He's also back to drawing walks at a nice rate
  7. Will West...I can't seem to remember, but was he the always rare undrafted free agent signed out of HS? Had good K/IP numbers last year, but lots of hits, too. Intriguing guy
  8. ah, learn something new every day. I've never heard them called anything but (insert item)-guy or vendor Agreed, 28 is awfully young.
  9. Lawrie blatantly threw it at the ump. I've seen people slam helmets and it never has looked like they are winding up to uncork a throw. Additionally, it didn't "nick" the umpire. It was slammed at him at full speed and it hits him pretty hard. If a student threw something like that at a teacher in a school, it would probably be a 2-week at home suspension with no makeup work.
  10. The Brewers haven't been parts of beanball wars since Yost was in charge. Macha didn't have anyone's back ever, and this game certainly wouldn't warrant any kind of retaliation
  11. I haven't had a chance to click on a link...what's a hawker? Is that like the ball hawks like the not-so Happy Youngster?
  12. With Josh Butler out and a couple of non-prospects (McClung and the other guy), why not try Vargas. Of course, I'd rather just promote Thornburg and/or Heckathorn
  13. wow, I think I'm the only one, but that called 3rd strike looked like a strike to me. It was just above the belt and it was right on the edge of the plate. If that was the Toronto pitcher throwing that and it had been called a ball, the whole crowd would have erupted at the umpire. It was a borderline call. It's easy to dislike Lawrie given what we've read of him, and this was disrespectful. I think the biggest mistake in the whole thing is with MLB. Lawrie should have gotten 15 games....10 for his actions (blatantly throwing helmet at umpire then charging him violently) and 5 for being a douchebag
  14. Gomez and Morgan are nice players, neither is the kind you build around. I'm not as excited about Schafer as many, as I preferred Komatsu's skill set. While I'm intrigued by Gennett, I'm also equally intrigued by Nick Shaw. Scooter has more power, but Shaw has the OBP skills. I also assume he has more defensive value since he's played a bunch of times at SS this year. I really hope Caleb Gindl returns to his usual numbers or improves on them, because he could be a great option in CF or RF.
  15. Given that Estrada has done well, I'd consider letting Fiers to the pen be an option. I'd also put Wooten on the club over Dillard. I really liked Dillard years ago. But he's not much of a strike-thrower, and those 95/96 mph sinkers are far behind him now.
  16. At this point I hope the Brewers can get something out of Gindl or Kentrail Davis for RF. That would allow us to move Hart. Heck, Hart should be playing 1b right now
  17. Wow, another inning with no runs for Arnett. He even allowed no baserunners for once. He's almost got his ERA into the 2's. Anyone have any info on his stuff? I assumed that with the struggles, the shoulder injury, etc that he was still around 90. Has it gotten back to pre-draft levels?
  18. Parra is the new Jorge De La Rosa, except people aren't as enthused. His stuff is ridiculously good and he'll tantalize us with some awesome outings, but the consistency isn't there.
  19. I'd like to send Dillard and Chulk to AAA, recall Peralta and Wooten for the pen. I normally have been anti-Peralta in the pen, but Estrada is doing a good job (low WHIP) and we're seeing a decent amount of high-end players successfully converting from minor league starter to big league reliever to big league starter. I'm thinking of CJ Wilson, Adam Wainwright, Phil Hughes, Neftali Feliz, Jeff Samardijza (sp?), etc. If Peralta is to be in our rotation next year, I'd rather he have legitimate MLB experience. Learning to attack hitters in key moments of games could be a nice step in his development. I'd also restructure the pen a bit. Loe is deserving of being a primary 7th inning guy, but Veras and Parra need to harness their stuff, and Peralta's stuff and Wooten's success would be nice complements to the pen.
  20. Well, we could move Weeks and Hart, clearing up about $20 million for next year. Of course right now I'd try to lock up Marcum for 5 years and $70 million since he's back
  21. Congrats to Wooten. He could be in the Brewers' pen by the end of the month. We need a 7th inning guy/short reliever. Veras has good stuff but needs to start going after hitters.
  22. Someone said that Braun was an aggressive hitter. I think that's true. I also feel that Weeks and others should be. I always base my approach on what I had success with as a kid (granted, Elmbrook little league was a joke and super easy). I often liked the approach of "take till there are two strikes" because it's amazing how often pitchers will throw 4 balls before 3 strikes. Yet at the same time, when facing the really talented pitchers I tweaked my approach to be "swing at the first meaty pitch." Braun typically swings at hittable pitches. If that's aggressive, then I love his approach since it's what all the Cardinals seem to follow every year. Sometimes the good pitch is the 1st, 2nd or 3rd pitch. Sometimes it never arrives. I feel like Weeks, Hart, et al seem to sometimes take the best pitches and swing at the crap because they're overly concerned with working the count. Working the count is very important, but as Dale Sveum always said, so is swinging at your pitch. As much as I like Rickie working the count early in games, I also love it when he ambushes the first pitch of the game--usually a 90% velocity thigh high heater that's crushable. He hasn't ambushed one in a while.
  23. well, I think some things to take from tonight....Green should start at 2b, Morgan vs his pal Volstad, Kottaras at 1b, Lucroy at catcher. SS can go either way.
  24. First move is Lucroy should swap with Weeks in the order. But should we get someone else in the lineup for a day or two? Green at 2b? Izturis or Maysonnet?
  25. PArra got screwed there. Threw 5 pitches, pitch fx shows 2/3 should have been strikes, not just 1
