  1. Thinking that in the next week or so it should be time to return my 403(b) and Health Savings Account investments to index and mutual funds. I moved them to MM/bond funds back in late February when the market was getting volatile. I don't think the market will be ready to go up much until May. This earnings season could be brutal, but I hope that analysts and institutional investors don't overreact, as much of the poor earnings is already baked into the stock prices.
  2. Why would preferred stocks have safer dividends? They are non-voting shares. Do companies ever pay dividends to preferred shares but not common? The difference is that if a company liquidates, you'd get a portion of the leftovers (although less than the value of your investment)
  3. So is that all instructional time? I have last hour prep, so in my non-coaching seasons I can leave at 1:10 as long as I’m not needed to sub. 8 to 830 is before school prep. 830 to 845 is morning check in/routine 845 to 10 is math 10 to 1015 recess 1015 to 1130 snack/reading, grammar, etc 1130 to 1215 lunch/lunch recess 1225 to 125 various prep time from pe, music, art, library, etc 125 to 2 writing 2 to 315 I teach math to the other 3rd grade class and they get SS, science, handwriting with my colleague 315 to 335 is 'study hall' where we give them time to get homework done/ask for help 335 to 340 is check out 340 to 4 is after school prep So yea, our schedule sucks. That's an elementary schedule too. I think it's awful. Our day used to be shorter and ended at 307. The kids are usually checked out by 230-3ish. Edit: just to continue my rant, we have 5 in service days before school starts and we do not get any days off during the year. When students have off we still have to go in for in service days. This includes going in after conferences where we stay until 730-8ish. Now, theyve also added 24 hours of professional development that is required or you get docked your hourly rate. The issue there is those 24 hours are spread over multiple days because the courses they offer are all 2-4 hours. We've had massive staff turnover the last 2 or 3 years. Oh yea, they also just cut our retirement benefits and put us into 3 groups based on experience. Basically screwed anyone that wasnt able to retire within 2 years and really screwed those with 10 or less. I was at 9 years and had planted my family here. Elementary is a different beast....I could never do that. We aren’t required to spend a minute on campus before or after our classes. Our off days during the year are all holidays, but school is closed for us those days, too
  4. We go 8 to 4. So is that all instructional time? I have last hour prep, so in my non-coaching seasons I can leave at 1:10 as long as I’m not needed to sub.
  5. Spending my spring break week getting things done. I've got taxes finished, painted a bathroom, cleaned, organized the pantry, and golfed twice. We have had limited direction in Arizona. The current school closure expires Friday March 27th. We were told by out union president to expect to spend next week as a prep week for potential online or packet-based learning. We are only allowed on campus next Tuesday in case we want to gather belongings. Our job site assignment is now officially: HOME. Turbo, a full eight hours? do you normally have to work eight hours? Our school day is only 6hrs 40 mins. yup, 7:30 am - 3:30 pm ours is 7:30-2:10.

  7. interesting that they also only have 2 reported critical cases and almost all their cases are reported as active. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
  8. I sure hope he's wrong, but knowing him and his history of shorting stocks, he's probably well positioned for a market meltdown. Every time he goes on the air, he makes money off of panic
  9. I can't imagine that. Initially the guesses were like .1%. Sounds like they are going to be at least 10 times higher, if not 20 times higher. Now it's spreading in sub-Saharan African countries, so I would see world-wide mortality rates increasing.
  10. China reported the mortality rate among the elderly as such: 60-69 year olds 3.6% 70-79 year olds as 8% 80+ as 14.8% Stats are supposedly skewed towards men. From my limited experience, a major factor is the extremely high smoking rates for men in China. Any lung damage makes someone especially vulnerable.
  11. Also, crazy that when we wake up, we’ll have hit 200,000 confirmed cases and 8,000 deaths. I started showing this site to my students last week Tuesday as I was comparing us to other nations’ graphs, like Italy. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries
  12. The Swine Flu had a mortality rate of 0.02%. Roughly 60 million people in the United States got H1N1 (around 20%), and about 12,500 died. It spread easily and quickly - but the fatality rate was not high. If I'm right, the death rate for seasonal flu is 0.1% - which is higher. Estimates for the death rate for COVID-19 have been running between 1.5% and 3.0%. Let's say that 20% of the population gets infected like in 2009 - that's roughly 65M people. Based upon the above death rate, that equals a death toll of about 1-2 million people. Of course, maybe the infection rate will be much lower - say 10%. Well, that's still 500,000-1,000,000 dead. And perhaps with all that has been learned, the death rate won't be as high. If 10% of the US population gets the disease, and it has a 1% death rate - that's still 325,000 dead. My wife is an exec at for a healthcare system. She's terrified of what it could do. We’re heading that this is much more contagious than the swine flu or other viruses. The scary part is that they’re saying many of us could be carriers without knowing it. Makes me think of when I came back from Vegas after Super Bowl weekend and I experienced several symptoms for 3-4 days that now check boxes but weren’t known then.... slightly elevated temperature (99°), mild throat irritation, muscle/joint weakness and fatigue, chills at night, etc. once the US has an anti-bodies test, I’d like to check it out as I’m curious.
  13. Reality is that if we ordered all people to stay home for 30 days, those with it should be able to finish showing symptoms, sometimes passing it to a housemate, but we should be able to pretty much cease its spread. My hope is that by May 1-15, we’ll be having very few new cases.
  14. So far made some nice money simply day trading 1 stock over the last 2 weeks. Bought and sold it 3 times. Guessing Monday and Tuesday will be down, so I’ll target a low level Monday, and hope to add to it lower Tuesday
  15. Will be curious to see what happens with my district in AZ. Still only 3 cases in the Valley despite 5 million people plus tourists. Lots of parents called their kids out today. We have spring break for the next week, but kind of expecting online or closure after that.
  16. I'd believe that if CC hadnt said Peralta and Lauer are battling for the #5 and guaranteed spots to Houser, Lindblom.....and Anderson. After Freddy's contract his service clock matters 0. Woodruff will be a Super 2. Lauer will be a Super 2 if he is on the roster 130days? Roughly. Hader is a Super 2. That will add up 2years from now. Hader#3 Woodruff#2 Lauer#2 Houser#1. So just saying, it would help their payroll quite a bit to option him for 9starts. Didn't he also say the loser was likely headed to the pen? That's the other thing with Lauer's injury: If they stick with the plan of having Burnes in AAA it opens up another bullpen job. No, he said if Peralta loses he probably goes to the pen. If Lauer lost, he probably went to AAA for depth since we’ll need 10 starters this year
  17. Can't rewind his clock if he's on the DL. No Bueno. totally irrelevant. Fans worry more about arby clocks than teams to. Teams want production
  18. CounselL has never lined up his starters early in camp. They throw them regularly on 2-3 days rest to build strength, then about 10-12 days ot they start slotting them in order. I could see us being pretty creative with Peralta and Burnes opening the year taking over in the 6th regularly for whomever has high pitch counts, possibly netting multiple 3-4 inning saves.
  19. So he'll be getting 2 million or more per year until he's 50. That's pretty awesome for him. Even if he goes all Terrell Owens, he won't go broke until at least 50 I didn’t realize TO was on the list, but it’s not surprising since most NFL and NBA players are broke within a couple years of their careers ending.
  20. Not entirely true. Athletes are taxed based on the state/s they play in during a given pay period. While half of Rendon's games will be played in tax jail California, the other half are elsewhere. Not true. He will also pay taxes on games in LA 2 (2) and Oakland (9). So he'll actually be at 92 games. Of course, that will partly be offset by playing games in Tampa, Houston, and Dallas.
  21. And its a terrible decision both now and long term. Woodruff Houser Lindblom and Lauer or Peralta are all locked in for 3 years. Locked in for 3 years? Not sure I like that. At some point I hope we move to a Rays-like model where we are producing some talented starters, getting 2-3 productive years, then dealing them for multiple prospects, only younger
  22. the panics related to Coronavirus are primarily driven by other countries. We likely won't hit peak panic for 6-8 weeks, so I'm looking to be more on the sideline. I made a nice profit on AAPL by buying at $260 and selling at $298. I expect it'll hit $260 before $320 again.
  23. Bump. great call. Sounds like they tore up his '22 team and '23 mutual options in this extension
  24. I don't think the order he named them to be anything other than how he rrandomly named them. Again, the position should go to whoever earned it out of spring training. I don't think they're making decisions on the lineup based on spring training numbers. I'm positive that Counsell and the analytics department will be looking at all sorts of information when filling out lineups for April. As the season goes on, health, hot streaks, etc will adjust the analytics.
  25. The Brewers have said that if Lauer is the #6, he'll be in the AAA rotation. Peralta however would be in MLB rotation or pen.
